BACKGROUND: Perinatal palliative care (PPC) is a multidisciplinary, family-centred approach aimed at improving the quality of life and comfort of newborns with life-limiting conditions, and their families. Midwives can play a crucial role in supporting these pathways. However, their specific contribution within PPC remains underexplored in the scientific literature.
AIM: To map the available evidence on the role and contributions of midwives in perinatal palliative care and to explore how midwifery practice is integrated into care strategies for pregnancies complicated by life-limiting fetal

BACKGROUND: Cardiac rehabilitation is one of the most widely recommended strategies to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease. The multicomponent nature of cardiac rehabilitation programs requires a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals including nurses who are equipped with extensive knowledge and skills. However, there is a lack of a comprehensive, explicit career pathway that contains academic and clinical development to prepare nurses to become cardiac rehabilitation specialists.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to identify the 3 essential components for cardiac rehab

In many western countries, there has been a marked change in the demographic profile of those entering the veterinary profession, with a shift from a predominantly male to a predominantly female intake. There have been parallel changes in society, with greater emphasis on human rights and work-life balance. It is, therefore, timely to consider what constitutes correct professional conduct for the profession, as there is the potential for problems to arise over the interpretation of 'professionalism' due to cultural and generational differences. A cross-section of staff and students within one

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada both require the teaching and demonstration of general competencies, which include professionalism and ethics as a condition of training program accreditation and specialty certification, respectively. Residents in dermatology and other specialties perceive their training in ethics is inadequate in numerous areas. Residents and specialists in dermatology encounter numerous ethical and professional issues throughout their workday. A dermatoethics curriculum was developed at The Wa

PURPOSE: Five years after the European Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics (EFOMP) published its first curricular framework for artificial intelligence (AI) in medical physics, the updated core curricula for radiology, radiotherapy and nuclear medicine have incorporated AI as a core competency rather than an addendum, a change consistent with the framework's principal recommendation. This paper examines the resulting educational landscape and defines the next stage of AI competency for the profession.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Focus Group 3 of the EFOMP Artificial Intelligence Specia

BACKGROUND: Anesthesiologic expertise is used at various points in the delivery room. The natural turnover of professionals requires continuous education and training for patient care. In a first survey among consultants and trainees, the desire for a delivery room-specific anesthesiologic curriculum has emerged. In order to enable a curriculum with decreasing supervision, a competence-oriented catalogue is used in many medical fields. The gain in competence develops gradually. The participation of practitioners should be obligatory to avoid a differentiation between theory and practice. The s

BACKGROUND: A variety of approaches are available that provide cultural competency education for practicing physicians. There is, however, still a need for additional, innovative approaches that address continuing education and professional improvement regarding cultural competency for physicians after their training.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the potential impact on established clinicians of writing an extended case narrative on cultural competency.
METHODS: We conducted structured interviews of physician contributors (n = 14) to a book of cases on cultural competency. Authors were invited to co

BACKGROUND: End-of-life care is a critical competency for the health care workforce, yet evidence suggests that many health care professionals feel unprepared to engage with death, dying, and bereavement. Death literacy and death competence are emerging frameworks for assessing readiness to provide high-quality, compassionate care. Although validated tools exist, little is known about the preparedness of final-year undergraduate health care students in Australia. Understanding their current levels of death literacy and death competence is essential for informing curriculum design and strengthe

Formal criteria and evidence-based guidelines commonly frame healthcare prioritisation, yet everyday prioritisation often occurs in organisational 'grey zones' where competing values coexist. Drawing on interviews with clinicians in two Norwegian cardiology wards, we examine how prioritisation is justified and enacted under institutional pluralism and moral ambiguity. Using Boltanski and Thévenot's framework of 'orders of worth', we show how clinicians develop discretionary compromises: situated adjustments that combine competing evaluative principles into hybrid justifications, making contest

The purpose of this study was to empirically investigate the validity and reliability of portfolio assessment in two U.S. dental schools using a unified framework for validity. In the process of validation, it is not the test that is validated but rather the claims (interpretations and uses) about test scores that are validated. Kane's argument-based validation framework provided the structure for reporting results where validity claims are followed by evidence to support the argument. This multivariate generalizability theory study found that the greatest source of variance was attributable t

OBJECTIVE: The research on the association between the working alliance and therapist competence/adherence and outcome from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is limited and characterized by inconclusive findings. This study investigates the working alliance and competence/adherence as predictors of outcome of CBT for social anxiety disorder (SAD) and panic disorder (PD).
METHOD: Eighty-two clinically referred patients (58.5% female; age: M = 33.6 years, SD = 10.3) with PD (n = 31) or SAD (n = 51) were treated with 12 sessions of manualized CBT by 22 clinicians with limited CBT experience in

Patients receiving home care are becoming increasingly dependent upon competent caregivers' 24-h availability due to their substantial care needs, often with advanced care and home care technology included. In Sweden, care is often carried out by municipality-employed paraprofessionals such as health care assistants (HC assistants) with limited or no health care training, performing advanced care without formal training or support. The aim of this study was to investigate the work experience of the HC assistants and to explore how they manage when delivering 24-h home care to patients with sub

Compensation of health care executives has continued to grow, largely pushed along by such factors as continuing turnover in top management positions in hospitals, according to the 1992 Hay hospital management/professional survey of compensation and benefits data from over 1,200 U.S. hospitals. And although pay increases are moving up faster among top hospital executives than in industry, overall hospital executive pay still lags. In addition, survey results look at such issues as linking executive pay to various measures of performance.

Health communication is increasingly recognized as central to public health practice, yet limited evidence shows how competencies are defined and developed in regions where the field is emerging. This mixed methods study examined how educators and practitioners in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) conceptualize essential knowledge, skills, and abilities for effective health communication and assess current education and training capacity. Survey data from 59 participants and follow-up interviews showed high importance ratings across all competency domains, particularly multicultural and crisi

Background. The prevalence of low vision and blindness in persons across the lifespan means that occupational therapists will encounter these conditions across all areas of practice. Practitioners must be equipped with competencies necessary to recognize and respond to vision loss-related concerns. Purpose. This study sought to identify essential occupational therapy competencies when providing services to people with low vision and blindness. Method. The study employed a three-phase modified Delphi methodology administered through online surveys and focus group. Respondents included people wi

Within the last several years therapeutic recreation has witnessed an increasing concern over the quality of professional preparation programs. Unfortunately, few efforts have really focused on improving the depth of preparation although the scope of preparation is fairly well documented by accreditation criteria. Quality analysis elucidates curricula by considering: (1) the depth of competence desired, (2) the barriers to acquiring said knowledge and (3) who is responsible for disseminating the knowledge to students. Furthermore, quality analysis relative to therapeutic recreation curricula c

The benefits of fluoroscopically guided interventional procedures are significant and have established new standards in the clinical management of many diseases. Despite the benefits, it is known that they come with known risks, such as the exposure to ionizing radiation. To minimize such risks, it is crucial that the health professionals involved in the procedures have a common understanding of the concepts related to radiation protection, such as dose descriptors, diagnostic reference levels and typical dose values. An update about these concepts will be presented with the objective to raise
