Towards efficient motor imagery interventions after lower-limb amputation.

BACKGROUND: The therapeutic benefits of motor imagery (MI) are now well-established in different populations of persons suffering from central nervous system impairments. However, research on similar efficacy of MI interventions after amputation remains scarce, and experimental studies were primarily designed to explore the effects of MI after upper-limb amputations. OBJECTIVES: The present comparative study therefore aimed to assess the effects of MI on locomotion recovery following unilateral lower-limb amputation. METHODS: Nineteen participants were assigned either to a MI group (n = 9) o

A radio- and fluorescently labelled tracer for imaging and quantification of bacterial infection on orthopaedic prostheses : a proof of principle study.

AIMS: Arthroplasty surgery of the knee and hip is performed in two to three million patients annually. Periprosthetic joint infections occur in 4% of these patients. Debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention (DAIR) surgery aimed at cleaning the infected prosthesis often fails, subsequently requiring invasive revision of the complete prosthetic reconstruction. Infection-specific imaging may help to guide DAIR. In this study, we evaluated a bacteria-specific hybrid tracer (99mTc-UBI29-41-Cy5) and its ability to visualize the bacterial load on femoral implants using clinical-grade image gui

Genomic analysis of a rare recurrent Listeria monocytogenes prosthetic joint infection indicates a protected niche within biofilm on prosthetic materials.

Listeria monocytogenes is a rare cause of prosthetic joint infections (PJI). In this study, we describe a case of recurrent L. monocytogenes infections, 39 months apart, following debridement and retention of a prosthetic hip. Despite numerous studies reporting persistent L. monocytogenes in human infections, the genomic and phenotypic changes that clinically relevant strains undergo in the host are poorly understood. Improved knowledge of how PJI occurs is needed to improve the management of prosthetic infections. We used a combination of long- and short-read sequencing to identify any potent

Obturator prostheses following palatal resection: clinical cases.

Malignant tumours of the upper gum and hard palate account for 1-5% of malignant neoplasms of the oral cavity; two thirds of the lesions which involve these areas are squamous cell carcinomas. Most of these carcinomas are diagnosed late, when they invade the underlying bone. The procedures of choice for removal are: alveolectomy, palatectomy, maxillectomy, which may be total or partial. Surgical reconstruction of the defect may be carried out using a wide range of microvascularized flaps: osteomuscolocutaneous of the internal iliac crest, an osteocutaneous flap of the fibula or scapula, fascia

[Clinical anophthalmos. Cosmetic outcome after 2 years therapy with an orbital expander for stimulating orbital growth].

BACKGROUND: Congenital anophthalmos is a rare condition in which intervention in an early age can stimulate orbital expansion. The therapeutic goal was to allow retention of a suitable prosthesis and to maximise facial symmetry. METHODS AND PATIENTS: We report on 3 anophthalmic newborn male patients, of which one presented with microphthalmos in the other eye as well as associated systemic disorders. Solid moulded shapes were adapted and manufactured out of methylmethacrylate to increase expansion of orbital soft tissue and bone. The moulding of the orbita was performed by silicone made of tw

Reinfection and re-revision rates of periprosthetic knee infection under four different surgical strategies: a single centre retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Management strategies for (suspected) periprosthetic joint infection after total knee arthroplasty (TKA-PJI) include debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention (DAIR); one-stage revision; 1.5-stage revision; and two-stage revision. Reported outcomes for these four approaches vary widely across studies, with failure rates ranging from 0% to 40%. This study aims to compare the four strategies in terms of reinfection rates, microbial profiles of recurrent infections, short- and long-term infection-free prosthesis survival, re-revision rates for any cause, and long-term implant lo

Implant primary stability determined by resonance frequency analysis in surgically created defects: a pilot cadaver study.

AIM: Implant primary stability is a prerequisite for implant success. A dehiscence or a circumferential defect (CD) at the time of implant placement presents a challenge for achieving primary stability. The aim of this study was to examine the correlations between implant primary stability determined by resonance frequency analysis (RFA) and periimplant bone levels. MATERIALS: Ten implants were placed in 2 cadaver heads. A series of different sizes of narrow (NDD) and wide (WDD) dehiscence defects and CDs were surgically created around 6 and 4 implants, respectively. Implant primary stability
