A one health perspective on multidrug-resistant bacterial infections: integrated approaches for surveillance, policy and innovation.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections represent a growing global health emergency, driven by interconnected human, animal, and environmental factors. This review adopts a One Health perspective to explore the transmission dynamics, operational integration, and innovative responses to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Case studies from China, India, Nigeria, Thailand, and Brazil underscore the effectiveness of regulatory reforms, surveillance networks, and public engagement campaigns. Notably, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming MDR management through real-time diagnostics and r

Implementing and expanding safe abortion care: An international comparative case study of six countries.

We conducted a comparative case study-based investigation of health sector strategies that were useful in expanding or establishing new abortion services. We selected geographically diverse countries from across the human development index if they had implemented new abortion laws, or changed interpretations of existing laws or policies, within the past 15 years (Colombia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Portugal, South Africa, and Uruguay). Factors facilitating the expansion of services include use of a public health frame, situating abortion as one component of a comprehensive reproductive health package,

The Impact of Community Engagement in the Design and Implementation of the Flint Registry.

BACKGROUND: The Flint water crisis (FWC) was a public health tragedy caused by crumbling infrastructure, subverted democracy, and indifference toward a predominantly poor and Black community that resulted in lead-in-water exposure, Legionnaires' disease, and emotional and health-related trauma. Through the cooperation of community partners, the Flint Registry (FR) was conceived to track long-term health and improve public health via service connections. OBJECTIVES: This study sought to share the FR's community-partnered, multi-tiered engagement strategy and determine the efficacy of this stra

Public health surveillance and infectious disease detection.

Emerging infectious diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, SARS, and pandemic influenza, and the anthrax attacks of 2001, have demonstrated that we remain vulnerable to health threats caused by infectious diseases. The importance of strengthening global public health surveillance to provide early warning has been the primary recommendation of expert groups for at least the past 2 decades. However, despite improvements in the past decade, public health surveillance capabilities remain limited and fragmented, with uneven global coverage. Recent initiatives provide hope of addressing this issue, and new tec

Assessment of the infectious diseases surveillance system of the Republic of Armenia: an example of surveillance in the Republics of the former Soviet Union.

BACKGROUND: Before 1991, the infectious diseases surveillance systems (IDSS) of the former Soviet Union (FSU) were centrally planned in Moscow. The dissolution of the FSU resulted in economic stresses on public health infrastructure. At the request of seven FSU Ministries of Health, we performed assessments of the IDSS designed to guide reform. The assessment of the Armenian infectious diseases surveillance system (AIDSS) is presented here as a prototype. DISCUSSION: We performed qualitative assessments using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines for evaluating surve…

Cost effectiveness of the Texas wildlife rabies Border Maintenance Zone.

Rabies prevention in the United States (US) relies on a robust public health infrastructure that includes pet vaccination, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), and wildlife surveillance, costing $245-$510 million annually but saving over $1 billion in avoided healthcare expenditures. While canine rabies has been eliminated from the US, wildlife reservoirs continue to pose a zoonotic threat, particularly bats, skunks, raccoons, and foxes. Oral rabies vaccination (ORV) programs targeting coyotes, foxes, and raccoons have demonstrated significant public health and economic benefits across multiple st…

An environmental scan of food and drink advertising on public transport around Adelaide schools.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Children and adolescents are particularly receptive to cues from food and drink advertising. Several policies recommend restricting unhealthy or discretionary ('junk') food advertising on government infrastructure such as public transport. Prior research in New South Wales (NSW) and Western Australia (WA) reveals a high proportion of discretionary food advertising outdoors and on public transport. The aim of this study was to identify the landscape of food and drink advertising on public transport assets around Adelaide schools. METHODS: An environmental scan of food and drin

Model building a national human biomonitoring programme from the ground up: A framework informed by a comprehensive review of global state-of-the-art practices.

Global chemical production is projected to increase sharply by 2050, intensifying concerns about population exposure and related health and environmental risks. Human biomonitoring (HBM) provides a direct measure of aggregate internal exposure to chemicals and can act as an early warning tool for emerging health risks. There are growing international efforts to strengthen chemicals management and integrated risk assessment, including the EU's One Substance, One Assessment (OSOA) framework. Systematic HBM data are increasingly recognised as essential for translating exposure information into ac

Antimicrobial resistance to colistin in neonates: epidemiological insights and public health implications in Nigeria - a mini review.

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remains a critical global health issue, particularly in low- and middle-income countries like Nigeria. Colistin, a last-resort antibiotic for multidrug-resistant Gram-negative infections, has seen rising resistance, posing a significant challenge for neonatal sepsis management. This narrative review focuses on colistin resistance in neonates in Nigeria, addressing a critical public health threat. With rising antimicrobial resistance, understanding its epidemiology in vulnerable populations is essential for effective interventions. METHOD

The decentralized academic health center: a 21st-century model for rural health innovation.

Rural communities in the United States face persistent gaps in health care access, workforce capacity, and outcomes despite substantial federal investment. Academic health centers (AHCs) are central to clinical care, research, and education, but remain largely urban-based and structurally misaligned with rural needs. We propose the Decentralized Academic Health Center (D-AHC), a distributed model that integrates academic institutions, rural providers, public health systems, and communities through shared governance, interoperable data infrastructure, and digital health tools. Unlike traditiona

Climate change and infectious diseases: breaking the poverty-disease-environment trap.

Climate change and infectious diseases jointly form a self-reinforcing poverty disease environment trap that disproportionately harms impoverished populations in low- and middle-income countries. Climate change amplifies the transmission of vector -borne, water-borne, and zoonotic infectious diseases by expanding vector distribution, triggering water source contamination via extreme weather, and disrupting ecological balance. Poverty worsens vulnerability due to insufficient health infrastructure, limited resource access, and weak adaptive capacity, with sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia facin
