During a telemetry study conducted between 1993 and 1995 in east-central Kansas (USA) on northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations, a wild adult male quail was found with signs of disorientation and torticollis in August 1994 in Lyon County, Kansas. Based on histological and parasitological examination, it was determined that the bird was infected with larval nematodes of the genus Baylisascaris spp. This is the first known recorded case of Baylisascaris sp. in a wild game bird species.

We recently identified a novel hypothalamic neuropeptide inhibiting gonadotropin release in quail and termed it gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH). Purified virions of the vaccine strain Leningrad-3 of mumps virus propagated in Japanese quail embryo cell cultures had a buoyant density 1.18-1.19 g/ml in sucrose gradient, contained 50 S RNA and showed variable sizes in electron microscopy as manifested by heterogeneity of the virus zone in sedimentation analysis. Purified L-3 virus contained 5 major polypeptides with molecular weights of 74,000, 68,000, 58,000, 45,000, and 39,000 daltons. Each polypeptide had an individual oligopeptide composition.

Small-scale measles and mumps virus propagation in microcarrier-grown cells was studied to assess putative advantages over conventional roller-type virus propagation. Significantly higher virus yields could not be attained with microcarrier cultures in cell stirrers, therefore making the advantages purely technological. The pattern of measles virus production was slightly different for the three types of microcarriers used. Experimental measles and mumps vaccine lots obtained met vaccine quality control requirements.

Avian isolates of Cryptosporidium species from different geographic locations were sequenced at two loci, the 18S rRNA gene and the heat shock gene (HSP-70). Phylogenetic analysis of the sequence data provided support for the existence of a new avian species of Cryptosporidium infecting finches and a second species infecting a black duck. The identity of Cryptosporidium baileyi and Cryptosporidium meleagridis as valid species was confirmed. Also, C. baileyi was identified in a number of isolates from the brown quail extending the host range of this species.

Here, we show that melatonin affects the temporal pattern of behavioral sequences in a noncircadian manner.
