This article explores the role of aesthetics in the construction and perception of what constitutes healthy reproduction and reproductive practices. I draw on women's reproductive experiences and navigations within a racialized gendered hierarchy. Processes and procedures related to the governance and measurements of reproduction and reproductive health shape these navigations. Focusing on Black women's experiences, I analyze the ways in which values, sensibilities, and affect connected to particular appearances and arrangements influence reproductive decision-making, reproductive health, and

This essay examines two Portuguese novels about colonialism and its legacies: António Lobo Antunes's Fado Alexandrino (1983) and Aida Gomes's Os Pretos de Pousaflores (The Blacks from Pousaflores) (2011). Fado Alexandrino perpetuates the use of Black women's raped bodies as a plot device to represent colonial violence, while Gomes's narrative empowers racialized victims of sexual abuse and challenges dominant public memories of the Colonial War. A close reading of these novels, contextualized against the background of scholarly debates about the representation of sexual violence, exposes both

OBJECTIVE: To examine prospective relations of perceived racial discrimination at ages 16-18 with body mass index (BMI) at ages 19-21 and insulin resistance (IR) at ages 25 and 27 among Black youth in the rural South, and to determine whether BMI connected discrimination to IR as a mediator.
METHOD: Participants were 315 African American adolescents in rural counties in Georgia who provided data on their perceptions of discrimination during adolescence. BMI was measured during a yearly home visit, and a certified phlebotomist drew a fasting blood sample from which IR was measured.
RESULTS: T

AIM: Using a nationally representative sample of African American men, this study investigated the associations between lifetime history of incarceration, discrimination, and mental health (e.g., depressive symptoms and psychological distress). We hypothesized that discrimination would fully mediate the association between incarceration history and mental health outcomes among African American men.
METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design, our analysis included 1271 African American men who participated in the National Survey of American Life (NSAL), 2001-2003. Incarceration history was the ma

This paper reviews domestic and international activism seeking justice for Romani and other women harmed by coercive, forced, and involuntary sterilization in the former Czechoslovakia and Czech Republic. Framed by Michel Foucault's theory of biopower, it summarizes the history of these abuses and describes human rights campaigns involving domestic and international litigation, advocacy, and grassroots activism, as well as the responses of the Czech governments. The paper describes how legal and policy work during the past decade has led to recognition of coercive, forced, and involuntary ster

OBJECTIVE: We examined the state-level association between legislation prohibiting the instruction of race and racism [i.e., Critical Race Theory (CRT) bans] in higher education and past-year suicidality.
METHOD: Participants (N = 95,561;72% female; 61% non-Hispanic white) were college students from the 2023-2024 wave of the Healthy Minds Study. Two-way fixed effects logistic regression models were estimated adjusting for student and college characteristics.
RESULTS: Students in states that passed CRT bans, compared to students in states that did not, had significantly higher odds of past-ye…

Children in immigrant families (CIF) represent one in four children in the United States and face disproportionate health risks shaped by immigration policy, structural racism, trauma, and barriers to care. Using a socioecological framework, this article reviews the current state of pediatric immigrant health and outlines opportunities for pediatricians to advance equity at the individual, organizational, and structural levels. Clinicians can follow expert clinical care guidelines, practice trauma-informed care and safe documentation practices, and partner with qualified medical interpreters. …

Racialized psychotherapy, a cluster of approaches centering race, racial identity, and racism in clinical work, emerged from legitimate concerns about cultural incompetence and minority underservice. The field has not tested the assumption that race-centering benefits racial minority clients. This paper identifies four mechanisms by which racialized therapy may harm clients: therapist-imposed racial salience that overrides client-defined concerns; hypervigilance induction through attributional training toward racial threat; externalized locus of control that undermines agency; and therapeutic …

Diabetes prevalence in Aotearoa New Zealand is rising rapidly, disproportionately affecting Māori communities and contributing to significantly higher rates of diabetes-related lower limb amputations. These inequities reflect systemic issues such as colonisation, racism, and limited access to culturally safe care rather than clinical factors alone. Embedding tikanga (Māori customs) within podiatry foot screening offers a pathway to culturally responsive practice that honours Māori spiritual, physical, and cultural well-being. Integrating Rongoā Māori (traditional healing) and whānau-centred ap…

This paper examines how current therapist training in mandated reporting (MR) and child welfare may inadvertently perpetuate oppression for Black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC) individuals through engagement in carceral practices rooted in systemic racism. Carceral practices involve coercive or punitive actions to control BIPOC and low-income communities, contributing to lower mental health service utilization among racial minorities, especially those with prior carceral involvement. Therapists in training, believing they are fulfilling ethical and legal duties, may overreport, negativel…

Using data from Black adolescents in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study (n = 1,316), we examined the moderating effect of school climate on the relationship between racial discrimination and later internalizing and externalizing behaviors during adolescence (Mage = 12.00; SD = 0.65). Longitudinal regression analyses showed that positive perceptions of school climate were linked to a weaker association between racial discrimination and subsequent internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Findings highlight the need to reduce discrimination that Black youth face while simul

PURPOSE: Studies associate mental health disparities among Latine and non-Latine adolescents with exposure to structural inequities and social stressors such as racial/ethnic discrimination (R/ED). Yet, there is limited longitudinal evidence for these relationships among Latine adolescents or how they might differ based on generational status.
METHODS: Data are from a cohort study of Latine adolescents (age 13 years at Wave 1) in California followed for up to 8 years (2015-2023). Exposures included types of R/ED and places where R/ED was experienced (Krieger's Experiences of Discrimination Me

PURPOSE: Early feeding practices such as feeding to soothe distress can shape children's self-regulation and eating behaviors. Maternal childhood maltreatment history and emotion regulation difficulties may contribute to greater reliance on feeding to soothe, though further evidence is needed. Furthermore, cultural differences in feeding may influence the association between emotion regulation and feeding to soothe. This study examined whether maternal trauma and emotion regulation difficulties predicted feeding to soothe and differences by racial marginalization group.

BACKGROUND: Discrimination is a psychosocial stressor that, through activation of stress-response pathways, may influence risk of adverse perinatal health outcomes. However, few studies have evaluated the association between discrimination and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), and none have explored effect modification by race or paternal support, which may buffer the adverse effects of discrimination.
METHODS: We included 1,847 non-Hispanic Black and White participants from the Maternal and Infant Environmental Health Riskscape (MIEHR) study. Krieger's validated Experiences of Discr

OBJECTIVES: Aligning with past work positioning racial discrimination as invalidation, or a form of interpersonal rejection and devaluation with myriad psychological effects, we aim to examine the role of Strong Black Woman/Superwoman Schema (SBW/SWS) in the relation between racial discrimination and borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms among Black women. We predicted that SWS would explain the relation between experiences of racial discrimination and BPD symptoms. We also hypothesized that while SWS would contribute to emotional control and thereby higher BPD symptoms, SWS would als

OBJECTIVE: This study seeks to assess the association between in utero exposure to racial violence during the Civil Rights movement and pubertal development and fertility outcomes within the Bogalusa Heart Study population.
METHODS: Utilizing a prospective cohort design, Bogalusa Heart Study participants born between 1960 and 1970 were categorized based on their gestational age during peak racial violence events in Bogalusa. Exposure was defined as being in utero during the first trimester during February-July 1965. Pubertal development was assessed using age at menarche for girls and Tanner

BACKGROUND: Despite growing evidence that racial discrimination is associated with substance use among Black Americans, the existing research on Black college students has not been synthesized. In response, this scoping review investigated the state of research on racial discrimination and substance use among Black college students in the United States (U.S.).

Edward S. Miller was born into slavery in 1858. After navigating the racist educational system in Kentucky, he moved north to seek greater opportunities. In Chicago, he obtained medical training, built a practice in the Black community, and participated in the growth of Provident Hospital. He earned broad respect and expanded his networks, serving in the Spanish American War as a field surgeon for a unique Black volunteer regiment. He prospered as an entrepreneur and civic leader, using the power of community networks to help found the first Black cemetery and a federally chartered bank in Chi
