Further observations on abnormal brain development caused by prenatal A-bomb exposure to ionizing radiation.

The pervasiveness of abnormal brain development caused by prenatal exposure to ionizing radiation is still largely unknown. The relationship between A-bomb radiation dose and two measures of neuromuscular performance, one of grip strength and the other of the fine motor coordination required in repetitive action, is described. A multivariate analysis of covariance was used to evaluate the effect of several covariates, such as prenatal radiation exposure and some physical measurements or IQ adding city and sex as categorical factors. When mentally retarded cases were included, a statistically s

[The epileptiform reactions of the human brain to prolonged exposure to low-dose ionizing radiation].

1125 inhabitants of Slavutich city where workers of the Chernobyl Atomic Power Station and their families live, have been electroencephalographically examined. The reasons for the medical check-up involved specific complaints of a headache, dizziness, nightmares, early waking up in the mornings and sometimes seizures. Disorders of the bioelectrical activity of paroxysmal nature were revealed in 286 cases (197 children of 3-17 years, 99 adults of 18-50 years). The epileptiform findings seem to be related to the ionising radiation. The latency for a high (single or repeated) dose may be short (o

[Fast repair in diploid yeast cells after combined exposure to ionizing radiation with different LET].

Fast repair in diploid yeast cells Saccharomyces cerevisiae XS800 exposed to the combined irradiation (alpha-particles + high-velocity electrons) was studied. It has been shown that fast repair was significantly more effective after combined irradiation with high doses than after exposure to high-velocity electrons or alpha-particles alone. The regions of radioresistance in the cell survival curves after combined irradiation can be explained by fast post-irradiation repair.

Exposure to ionizing radiation and risk of cutaneous malignant melanoma. Search for error and bias.

In a 1984 case-control study of cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) among workers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Austin and Reynolds found an association between reported employment in proximity to ionizing radiation and CMM (odds ratio (OR) = 5.4; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.4, 20.7). But in a preliminary study in 1981, they found no association between individual radiation dosimetry readings and CMM. We reanalyzed the 1984 Austin-Reynolds case-control data to determine whether error or bias explain the inconsistency between reported employment in proximity to radiation and

Ionizing radiation and UV induction of p53 protein by different pathways in ataxia-telangiectasia cells.

Cell cycle anomalies have been described in ataxia-telangiectasia cells after exposure to ionizing radiation. A recent report demonstrates that cells from these patients lack the ionizing radiation-induced increase in p53 protein seen in controls. We report here that an ionizing radiation-induced p53 response is reduced and/or delayed in cells from four ataxia-telangiectasia complementation groups. On the other hand, p53 induction is normal in all A-T complementation groups after exposure to UV-B light, an agent to which these cells are not hypersensitive. Specific inhibitors of protein kinase

Irradiated trauma victims: the impact of ionizing radiation on surgical considerations following a nuclear mishap.

The combination of conventional traumatic injuries and radiation exposure has synergistic consequences, the full extent of which may take days to weeks to become apparent. Our understanding of such is derived from a variety of laboratory and clinical scenarios involving both therapeutic and accidental exposures. When presented with such an individual one must discern whether the victim has been bodily contaminated versus exposed to a source or both. The former will necessitate decontamination procedures which may be as simple as declothing and showering the individual. Simply removing the vict

Inactivation of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) by ionizing radiation in body fluids and serological evidence.

A method to use ionizing radiation to inactivate HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) in human body fluids was studied in an effort to reduce the risk of accidental infection to forensic science laboratory workers. Experiments conducted indicate that an X-ray absorbed dose of 25 krad was required to completely inactivate HIV. This does not alter forensically important constituents such as enzymes and proteins in body fluids. This method of inactivation of HIV cannot be used on body fluids which will be subjected to deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) typing.

Comparison of functional and morphological deficits in the rat after gestational exposure to ionizing radiation.

Ionizing radiation is a precise tool for altering formation of the developing cerebral cortex of the fetal rat. Whole body exposure of the pregnant rat on gestational day 13, 15 or 17 to 1.0 Gy of gamma radiation resulted in maximum thinning of the cortex on days 15 and 17. In the preweaning period, functional tests (negative geotaxis, reflex suspension, continuous corridor and gait) were most affected by irradiation gestational day 15, as was body weight. When a lower dose of radiation (0.75 Gy) was used on gestational day 15, the damage to the cortex was much less but behavioral changes were

Long-term effects of local ionizing radiation treatment on Langerhans cells in mouse footpad epidermis.

Langerhans cells (LC) were studied with ADPase histochemistry in sheets of hind footpad epidermis from groups of CBA/H mice. Single, local 20-Gy doses of 250-kV x-rays were administered to the right hind feet of the mice when they were 3-4 months old, and LC were counted at intervals ranging from 2 to 24 months later. In unirradiated mice, aged 5-19 months, the mean density of LC in footpad was 1521-1617 cells/mm2. It dropped to 1137 +/- 86 cells/mm2 (mean +/- SE) in untreated 28-month-old mice. At times from 2-15 months after irradiation, normal mean densities of LC were present in footpad ep

Unusual resistance to ionizing radiation of the viruses of kuru, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and scrapie.

The titers of several preparations of kuru. Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease, and scrapie viruses were reduced by only 1/10th or less by high doses of gamma radiation of 50 kGy and by only 1/10th-1/1000th or less for 200 kGy. This unusual radiation resistance of the two human viruses further links them with the scrapie virus and suggests that the genetic information of all three viruses is considerably smaller than that of any other known viruses of mammals.

Assessing the Complexities of Utilizing BH3 Mimetics for a Senolytic Strategy in Combination with Ionizing Radiation.

Radiation-induced senescence (RIS) is thought to be one mechanism by which tumor cells can survive radiation-induced cell death. Accumulating evidence suggests that therapy-induced senescence (TIS) (triggered by both chemotherapy and/or irradiation) also facilitates tumor cell recovery, thereby contributing to disease recurrence. Furthermore, the factors secreted by senescent tumor cells (the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP)) have, in some cases, been reported to be tumor-promoting, immunosuppressive, and potentially responsible for some of the adverse effects of radiation. Changes to the configuration of angiography equipment to reduce exposure to ionizing radiation in FGI procedures.

Angiography systems offer three dose rate modes (low, normal, and high) for performing fluoroscopy-guided interventional (FGI) procedures, with each mode corresponding to a specific set of parameters. Although the choice of mode should depend on the patient's biotype, such systems are typically shipped from the factory configured to start examinations in normal mode as the default. To reduce both the need for operator intervention during FGI procedures and the exposure of patients to ionizing radiation, we tested a change to the internal setup of an angiography machine in this study, in which

A Novel Analysis Method for Evaluating the Interplay of Oxygen and Ionizing Radiation at the Gene Level.

Whilst the impact of hypoxia and ionizing radiations on gene expression is well-understood, the interplay of these two effects is not. To better investigate this aspect at the gene level human bladder, brain, lung and prostate cancer cell lines were irradiated with photons (6 Gy, 6 MV LINAC) in hypoxic and normoxic conditions and prepared for the whole genome analysis at 72 h post-irradiation. The analysis was performed on the obtained 20,000 genes per cell line using PCA and hierarchical cluster algorithms to extract the most dominant genes altered by radiation and hypoxia. With the help of t

The effects of ionizing radiation on domestic dogs: a review of the atomic bomb testing era.

Dogs were frequently employed as laboratory subjects during the era of atomic bomb testing (1950-1980), particularly in studies used to generate predictive data regarding the expected effects of accidental human occupational exposure to radiation. The bulk of these studies were only partly reported in the primary literature, despite providing vital information regarding the effects of radiation exposure on a model mammalian species. Herein we review this literature and summarize the biological effects in relation to the isotopes used and the method of radionuclide exposure. Overall, these stud

Influence of mitotic delay on the results of biological dosimetry for high doses of ionizing radiation.

The purpose of this study was to systematically investigate how high doses of sparsely and densely ionizing radiations influence the proliferation time of lymphocytes in short-term cultures and, consequently, the observed frequencies of dicentric and centric ring chromosomes. Peripheral blood samples from five volunteers were irradiated with high doses of 200 kV X-rays and with neutrons with a mean energy of <En>or=2.1 MeV. First division metaphase cells were collected after different culture times of 48, 56, and 72 h and dicentrics, centric ring chromosomes, and acentric fragments were determ

Effect of ionizing radiation on the stability and performance of the TAXUS Express2 paclitaxel-eluting stent.

BACKGROUND: The advent of drug-eluting stents has provided the interventional cardiologist an effective new tool in treating coronary restenosis. There remains, however, a small group of patients that still require intervention following drug-eluting stent therapy. Currently, intravascular brachytherapy (IVBT) is approved for use in the treatment of in-stent restenosis (ISR). This study investigated the effect of gamma and beta radiation doses typically used in IVBT on the performance of the TAXUS Express(2) paclitaxel-eluting stent. METHODS AND RESULTS: It was determined that there were no s
