Radiation exposure contribution of the scout abdomen radiograph in common pediatric fluoroscopic procedures.

BACKGROUND: Contrast enema, voiding cystourethrography and upper gastrointestinal studies are the most common fluoroscopic procedures in children. Scout abdomen radiographs have been routinely obtained prior to fluoroscopy and add to the radiation exposure from these procedures. Elimination of unnecessary routine scout radiographs in select studies might significantly reduce radiation exposure to children and improve the overall benefit-to-risk ratio of these fluoroscopic procedures. OBJECTIVE: To determine the radiation exposure contribution of the preliminary/scout abdomen radiographs with …

Exposure to ionizing radiation and brain cancer incidence: The Life Span Study cohort.

BACKGROUND: Ionizing radiation is a cause of cancer. This paper examines the effects of radiation dose and age at exposure on the incidence of brain cancer using data from the Life Span Study (LSS) of atomic bomb survivors. METHODS: The Radiation Effects Research Foundation website provides demographic details of the LSS population, estimated radiation doses at time of bomb in 1945, person years of follow-up and incident cancers from 1958 to 1998. We modelled brain cancer incidence using background-stratified Poisson regression, and compared the excess relative risk (ERR) per Gray (Gy) of bra

Dermatopathology effects of simulated solar particle event radiation exposure in the porcine model.

The space environment exposes astronauts to risks of acute and chronic exposure to ionizing radiation. Of particular concern is possible exposure to ionizing radiation from a solar particle event (SPE). During an SPE, magnetic disturbances in specific regions of the Sun result in the release of intense bursts of ionizing radiation, primarily consisting of protons that have a highly variable energy spectrum. Thus, SPE events can lead to significant total body radiation exposures to astronauts in space vehicles and especially while performing extravehicular activities. Simulated energy profiles …

Radiation exposure to the eye lens of orthopaedic surgeons during various orthopaedic procedures.

The aim of the present study was to assess the radiation dose to the eye lens of orthopaedic surgeons during various orthopaedic procedures … be achieved or exceeded. The use of protective lead glasses is recommended as they could reduce the radiation exposure of the lens of the eye. The phantom measurements demonstrated that the use of half-dose mode could additionally reduce dose to the operator's eye lens.

Escherichia coli genes and pathways involved in surviving extreme exposure to ionizing radiation.

To further an improved understanding of the mechanisms used by bacterial cells to survive extreme exposure to ionizing radiation (IR), we broadly screened nonessential Escherichia coli genes for those involved in IR resistance by using transposon-directed insertion sequencing (TraDIS). Forty-six genes were identified, most of which become essential upon heavy IR exposure. Most of these were subjected to direct validation. The results reinforced the notion that survival after high doses of ionizing radiation does not depend on a single mechanism or process, but instead is multifaceted. Many ide

Potentially lethal damage repair in drug arrested G2-phase cells after radiation exposure.

Potentially lethal damage (PLD) repair has been defined as that property conferring the ability of cells to recover from DNA damage depending on the postirradiation environment. Using a novel cyclin dependent kinase 1 inhibitor RO-3306 to arrest cells in the G2 phase of the cell cycle, examined PLD repair in G2 in cultured Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. Several CHO-derived DNA repair mutant cell lines were used in this study to elucidate the mechanism of DNA double-strand break repair and to examine PLD repair during the G2 phase of the cell cycle. While arrested in G2 phase, wild-type CHO

Transcatheter patent ductus arteriosus closure with echocardiographic guidance: can radiation exposure be reduced?

OBJECTIVES: The radiation dose from interventional cardiac catheterization is particularly relevant when treating children because of their greater radiosensitivity compared to adults. The transcatheter closure of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), as well as other more complex pediatric interventions, have raised concerns regarding radiation exposure, particularly relevant when treating children. The purpose of this study is to show how to perform the transcatheter closure of PDA in children while giving less ionized radiation and to prove that the amount of radiation and contrast material can b…

Does less invasive spine surgery result in increased radiation exposure? A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Radiation exposure to patients and spine surgeons during spine surgery is expected. The risks of radiation exposure include thyroid cancer, cataracts, and lymphoma. Although imaging techniques facilitate less invasive approaches and improve intraoperative accuracy, they may increase radiation exposure. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We performed a systematic review to determine whether (1) radiation exposure differs in open spine procedures compared with less invasive spine procedures; (2) radiation exposure differs in where the surgeon is positioned in relation to the C-arm; and (3) if radi…

Exposure to ionizing radiation induced persistent gene expression changes in mouse mammary gland.

BACKGROUND: Breast tissue is among the most sensitive tissues to the carcinogenic actions of ionizing radiation and epidemiological studies have linked radiation exposure to breast cancer. Currently, molecular understanding of radiation carcinogenesis in mammary gland is hindered due to the scarcity of in vivo long-term follow up data. We undertook this study to delineate radiation-induced persistent alterations in gene expression in mouse mammary glands 2-month after radiation exposure. METHODS: Six to eight week old female C57BL/6J mice were exposed to 2 Gy of whole body γ radiation and mam…

Interventional radiology in pregnancy complications: indications, technique, and methods for minimizing radiation exposure.

Complications of pregnancy, whether they occur during gestation or postpartum, often pose complex challenges because they affect two patients (mother and fetus or infant) and because both short- and long-term outcomes must be considered in management decision making. Interventional radiologists play a critical role in treating complications such as ectopic implantation, postpartum hemorrhage, symptomatic ovarian cyst, post-cesarean section fluid collection, obstructive uropathy, and vesicouterine fistula. Interventional radiology offers therapeutic options that obviate surgery, thereby minimiz

Vitamin D receptor genotypes, ultraviolet radiation exposure, and risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure may influence risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) through vitamin D, with antineoplastic effects mediated through the vitamin D receptor (VDR). To explore the role of vitamin D in NHL risk and the potential interaction with UVR, the authors genotyped 10 VDR polymorphisms in 2,448 NHL patients and 1,981 controls from Denmark and Sweden who were recruited in 1999-2002. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were computed with logistic regression. P values were 2-sided. Most VDR variants (e.g., rs731236/TaqI, rs15444410/BsmI) were not associated with overall

Membrane receptor signaling and control of DNA repair after exposure to ionizing radiation.

Accumulated evidence indicates that activation of erbB family of receptors, when mutated or over-expressed, mediates chemo- and radiotherapy resistance. In this context signaling pathways down-stream of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), when abnormally activated, invoke cell survival mechanisms, which leads to resistance against radiation. In several reports it has been demonstrated that molecular targeting of EGFR signaling enhances the cytotoxic effects of radiotherapy. The radiosensitizing effects of EGFR antagonists correlate with a suppression of the ability of tumor cells to repai

Health risks of exposure to non-ionizing radiation--myths or science-based evidence.

INTRODUCTION: The non-ionizing radiation (NIR) contains large range of wavelengths and frequencies from vacuum ultraviolet (UV) radiation to static electric and magnetic fields. Biological effects of electromagnetic (EM) radiation depend greatly on wavelength and other physical parameters. OPTICAL RADIATION: The Sun is the most significant source of environmental UV exposure, so that outdoor workers are at risk of chronic over-exposure. Also exposure to short-wave visible light is associated with the aging and degeneration of the retina. Especially hazardous are laser beams focused to a small
