Optical radiation ranges from short wave ultraviolet via visible light to the far infra-red. Between the 10th and 20th December 1990, there was a malfunction in the operation of the Electron Linear Accelerator (ELA) at the Hospital Clínico Universitario in Zaragoza (Spain), which led to irradiation with the highest beam energy. This situation shows the existence of a latent period between the irradiation and the appearance of the symptoms, even in situations involving much higher than normal doses in cases of localized irradiation.

It is possible, in vitro, to break down human skin then reassemble the collagen fibres of the dermis, essentially type I collagen. The authors have developed a biophysical process for the manufacture of type I autocollagen. They present the electron microscopic study of this collagen. These healthy collagen fibres are compared with the fibres obtained from radiation dermatitis skin and keloid scars. Major ultrastructural differences are demonstrated.

Fluorescent lamps for general lighting purposes cannot produce UV erythema or direct pigmentation whereas sun lamps used for tanning are comparable to the actinic effects of natural radiation at a clear summer day. Chronic effects due to fluorescent lighting have not been proved so far.

Perforating radiogenic defects of the auricle in the area of the cymba, conchal cavity and triangular fossa can be reconstructed in a one stage procedure by a pedicled composite flap of conchal cartilage and skin. The conchal donor area is covered with a free skin-fat-graft from the lobule or with a full-thickness retroauricular graft from the unaffected ear. The defect reconstruction on the retroauricular side can be carried out with a pedicled skin flap from the unaffected adjacent retroauricular region.
