The 'DIMPLE SIGN' of Intra-Aortic Cord.

BackgroundWith increasing use of imaging to diagnose human pathology, newer aortic anomalies are being identified. An intra-aortic cord is one such abnormality, which requires differentiating from an intimal flap of dissection, to avoid major surgery or prolonged surveillance. The aim of this study was to bring forth a unique feature of the intra-aortic cord on imaging, using volume rendering reformatting and identify similar findings in published literature and hence establish the role of the 'Dimple' sign.MethodsReview of both our institutional imaging (2 cases) as well as the published lite

Pulmonary Nodule Clinical Trial Data Collection and Intelligent Differential Diagnosis for Medical Internet of Things.

In this paper, the medical Internet of things (IoT) is used to pool data from clinical trials of pulmonary nodules, and on this basis, intelligent differential diagnosis techniques are investigated. A filtered orthogonal frequency division multiplexing model based on polarisation coding is proposed, where the input data are fed to a modulator after polarisation cascade coding, and the system performance is analysed under a medical Internet of things modulated additive Gaussian white noise channel. The above polarisation-coded filtered orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system component

Automatic classification of canine thoracic radiographs using deep learning.

The interpretation of thoracic radiographs is a challenging and error-prone task for veterinarians. Despite recent advancements in machine learning and computer vision, the development of computer-aided diagnostic systems for radiographs remains a challenging and unsolved problem, particularly in the context of veterinary medicine. In this study, a novel method, based on multi-label deep convolutional neural network (CNN), for the classification of thoracic radiographs in dogs was developed. All the thoracic radiographs of dogs performed between 2010 and 2020 in the institution were retrospect

The Feature Ambiguity Mitigate Operator model helps improve bone fracture detection on X-ray radiograph.

This study was performed to propose a method, the Feature Ambiguity Mitigate Operator (FAMO) model, to mitigate feature ambiguity in bone fracture detection on radiographs of various body parts. A total of 9040 radiographic studies were extracted. These images were classified into several body part types including 1651 hand, 1302 wrist, 406 elbow, 696 shoulder, 1580 pelvic, 948 knee, 1180 ankle, and 1277 foot images. Instance segmentation was annotated by radiologists. The ResNext-101+FPN was employed as the baseline network structure and the FAMO model for processing. The proposed FAMO model

Evaluation of vertebral bone strength with a finite element method using low dose computed tomography imaging.

BACKGROUND: Focusing on compression fractures of bone by finite elements, we evaluated bone strength based on the computed tomography-based finite element method. However, the exposure dose is an issue. We aimed to investigate the quantity of reduction of the radiation dose with respect to the reference dose by comparing the calculation results of compression fractures of the vertebral body using experimental data obtained from the spine of a pig. METHODS: Computed tomography images of a self-made phantom that enclosed the lower lumbar vertebra of edible wild pigs were obtained under baseline

Automatic detection and diagnosis of sacroiliitis in CT scans as incidental findings.

Early diagnosis of sacroiliitis may lead to preventive treatment which can significantly improve the patient's quality of life in the long run. Oftentimes, a CT scan of the lower back or abdomen is acquired for suspected back pain. However, since the differences between a healthy and an inflamed sacroiliac joint in the early stages are subtle, the condition may be missed. We have developed a new automatic algorithm for the diagnosis and grading of sacroiliitis CT scans as incidental findings, for patients who underwent CT scanning as part of their lower back pain workout. The method is based o

Using the zygomatic arch as a reference line for clinical applications and anthropological studies.

PURPOSE: The Frankfurt line is the most frequently and widely used reference line in cephalometric analysis, but has shortcomings including the difficulty of landmark identification. This study investigated using the superior border of the zygomatic arch as a new external bony landmark, including measuring the angle between the new reference line and the Frankfurt line. METHODS: Facial computed tomography scans were obtained from 170 patients (100 males and 70 females) hospitalized at Konkuk University Chungju Hospital. After three-dimensional reconstruction, the locations of the porion and t

Multilevel glenoid morphology and retroversion assessment in Walch B2 and B3 types.

OBJECTIVE: A major factor that impacts the long-term outcome and complication rates of total shoulder arthroplasty is the preoperative posterior glenoid bone loss quantified by glenoid retroversion. The purpose of this study was to assess if glenoid retroversion varies significantly at different glenoid heights in Walch B2 and B3 glenoids. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with B2 and B3 glenoid types were included following retrospective review of 386 consecutive CT shoulder studies performed for arthroplasty preoperative planning. True axial CT reconstructions were created using a validated t

Pediatric chest CT at chest radiograph doses: when is the ultralow-dose chest CT clinically appropriate?

PURPOSE: Computed tomography (CT) use in emergency departments represents a significant contribution to pediatric patients' exposure to ionizing radiation. Here, we evaluate whether ultralow-dose chest CT can be diagnostically adequate for other diagnoses and whether model-based iterative reconstruction (MBIR) can improve diagnostic adequacy compared to adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction (ASIR) at ultralow doses. METHODS: Twenty children underwent chest CTs: 10 standard-dose reconstructed with ASIR and 10 ultralow-dose reconstructed with ASIR and MBIR. Four radiologists assessed im

Are multiplanar reconstructions necessary in routine body computed tomography practice?: what is the published evidence?

OBJECTIVE: During computed tomography interpretation, some anatomical regions are optimally displayed in planes other than axial. The purpose of this review was to define best interpretative practice, by demonstrating through literature review and case demonstration the computed tomography applications that should routinely include multiplanar viewing of the volume. CONCLUSIONS: Owing to multidetector-row computed tomography technology, multiplanar reconstructions not only have become realistic and reliable but also, in some clinical settings, have been shown to improve diagnostic accuracy an

[Value of modern imagery in the study of coronoido-malar malformations. Apropos of 2 cases].

We report two cases of mechanical limitation of buccal opening. CT scanning of bone anomalies diagnosed on standard radiography allowed to define malformation of the coronoid piston on the one hand, and the temporo-malar groove on the other: a combination of Langenbeck's and Jacob's disease in one case and Langenbeck's disease in the other. Coronoidectomy, systematically bilateral, demonstrated these morphological anomalies together with formation of coronoido-malar neo-arthrosis.

Development of a joint space width measurement method based on radiographic hand images.

This study presents a novel algorithm to measure joint space widths (JSWs) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) using radiographic hand images. Radiographic images were first preprocessed, and then phalangeal regions corresponding to the bone structures of each finger were extracted using step-wedge functions. Phalangeal branch paths were also extracted. Each of the five extracted phalangeal branch paths matched the bone structures of each finger exactly and ran through the center of each finger. The algorithm automatically detected 14 joints, which were identified as sharp changes in gr
