Can MDCT Enhancement Patterns Be Helpful in Differentiating Secretory from Non-Functional Adrenal Adenoma?

Background and Objectives: Primary adrenal tumors (AT) are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms due to their functional heterogeneity, which results in the diverse clinical presentation of these tumors. The purpose of this study was to examine cross-sectional imaging characteristics using multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) to provide insight into the lesion characterization and functional status of these tumors. The radionuclide imaging using Technetium-99m radiolabeled hydrazinonicotinylacid-d-phenylalanyl1-tyrosine3-octreotide (99mTc-HYNIC-TOC), was also used in the diagnostic evaluatio…

Positron emission tomography in cancer research and treatment.

Positron emission tomography (PET), the imaging of pharmaceuticals labeled with positron-emitting radionuclides, is a rapidly growing modality for the diagnosis and management of cancer. PET yields high-quality images characterizing substrate metabolism, cellular proliferation, receptor density, and other parameters that can be used to identify cancer and evaluate its response to therapies. The technique mainly utilized in cancer management is FDG-PET, which exploits the abnormal glucose metabolism of cancer cells first characterized by Warburg. We discuss the principles of PET, the currently

Scintigraphic patterns in osteoid osteoma and spondylolysis.

A retrospective review was performed of radionuclide bone scans and radiographs of 54 children with diagnoses of spondylolysis or osteoid osteoma/osteoblastoma. The findings indicate that skeletal scintigraphy shows imaging patterns that can be used to help distinguish these two conditions. Most cases of spondylolysis and all cases of osteoid osteoma or osteoblastoma demonstrated focally increased activity on the delayed skeletal scintigrams. Evaluation of the bone scan images obtained during the immediate postinjection period revealed intense activity with osteoid osteoma and osteoblastoma, b

Improved X-ray absorption capability of Core-shell nano-transducer in situ enhances γ-ray-excited radioluminescence imaging in vivo.

BACKGROUND: Radioluminescence imaging (RLI) using nanoscintillators offers great potential for biomedical applications, yet remains constrained by low quantum efficiency and the reliance of Cerenkov imaging on high-energy radionuclides. The rational design of core-shell nano-transducers overcomes these constraints by enhancing X-ray absorption and energy confinement, thereby enabling efficient γ-ray excited radioluminescence. RESULTS: We engineered NaGdF₄:15%Eu@NaLuF₄ core-shell nanoparticles as a superior nano-scintillator, designed to leverage Technetium-99m (99mTc) as an ideal excitation s

Copper bis(diphosphine) complexes: radiopharmaceuticals for the detection of multi-drug resistance in tumours by PET.

Experience with imaging of the multi-drug resistance (MDR) phenotype in tumours using technetium-99m sestamibi, a substrate of the P-glycoprotein (Pgp) transporter, suggests that better quantification of images and separation of MDR from other variables affecting tracer uptake in tumours are required. One approach to these problems is the development of short half-life positron-emitting tracers which are substrates of Pgp. Several lipophilic cationic copper(I) bis(diphosphine) complexes labelled with copper-64 have been synthesised and evaluated in vitro as substrates for Pgp. The synthesis is

Impact on PET spatial resolution through positron range confinement in a high magnetic field across tissue-equivalent materials.

Objective. The spatial resolution of positron emission tomography (PET) imaging is intrinsically limited by the finite range of positrons before annihilation, an effect that becomes increasingly relevant for high-energy emitters and for preclinical studies targeting small structures. In integrated PET/ magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems, the magnetic field can modify positron trajectories, reducing their transverse spread and introducing anisotropic resolution effects. However, experimental evidence of the combined influence of positron energy and material density under high-field preclin

The heterobivalent (SSTR2/albumin) radioligand [67Cu]Cu-NODAGA-cLAB4-TATE enables efficient somatostatin receptor radionuclide theranostics.

Somatostatin type 2 receptor (SSTR2) radionuclide therapy using β- particle-emitting radioligands has entered clinical practice for the treatment of neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs). Despite the initial success of [177Lu]Lu‑DOTA-TATE, theranostic SSTR2 radioligands require improved pharmacokinetics and enhanced compatibility with alternative radionuclides. Consequently, this study evaluates the pharmacokinetic effects of the albumin-binding domain cLAB4 on theranostic performance of copper‑67-labeled NODAGA-TATE variants in an SSTR2-positive mouse pheochromocytoma (MPC) model. Methods: Binding,

Tumour-to-Kidney Absorbed Dose Ratios for Alpha-Emitter PRRTs Estimated with [177Lu]Lu-DOTATATE SPECT Images and Biokinetic Models: Patient Variations Impact Contribution from Redistributing Daughters.

INTRODUCTION: Biokinetics for potential alpha-emitter peptide receptor radionuclide therapies (PRRTs) were simulated to estimate tumour-to-kidney absorbed dose ratios for 225Ac, 227Th, 212Pb, 230U, 226Ac, 211At, and 149Tb. The impact of daughter redistribution was studied, along with the effects of differing biokinetics and modelling assumptions. METHODS: Post-injection whole body probe measurements and SPECT/CT images at five and four time points, respectively, of 14 patients receiving [177Lu]Lu-DOTATATE were used to estimate whole body, tumour, and kidney time-activity curves. Development of a Novel Engineered Antibody Format for PSMA-Targeted Radionuclide Therapy.

Prostate cancer remains a prevalent and lethal malignancy across the globe. Despite ongoing advances in therapeutic approaches, these remain ineffective, and new treatments are drastically needed. Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-targeted radionuclide therapy is a well-developed approach for prostate cancer treatment; however, current small molecule and antibody carriers for molecular radiotherapy each have drawbacks in their biodistribution and consequent side effects as highlighted in current clinical trials. To address this, we developed an approach to bioengineer the well clinical

Clinical value of radionuclide shuntography by qualitative methods in hydrocephalic adult patients with suspected ventriculoperitoneal shunt malfunction.

To determine the clinical value of radionuclide shuntography in the evaluation of adult hydrocephalic patients with suspected ventriculoperitoneal (V-P) shunt malfunction. All adult patients who underwent Tc-99m diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid shuntographic scans at Far Eastern Memorial Hospital between August 2005 and December 2015 were included. Shuntographic results were visually evaluated in a simple qualitative manner: prompt flow that reached the peritoneum on 30-minute early images and diffuse peritoneal tracer distribution on 2-hour delayed images were interpreted as nonobstructive

Liver cysts associated with polycystic kidney disease: role of Tc-99m hepatobiliary imaging.

A 42-year-old woman with multiple hepatic cysts associated with autosomal polycystic kidney disease was evaluated for abdominal discomfort and new liver test abnormalities following blind aspirations of her liver cysts. Tc-99m mebrofenin hepatobiliary imaging revealed a markedly enlarged liver with multiple photon deficient areas, focal retention of isotope in the left hepatic ductal system, no accumulation of radionuclide in cysts, and an unusual medial gallbladder position. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiography confirmed all of these findings. Abdominal discomfort and liver biochemical abnor

Radionuclide angiography in two cases of hepatic actinomycosis.

Primary hepatic actinomycosis is rare, and there have been few reports concerning its nuclear imaging findings. Two cases of actinomycosis, in which hypervascular hepatic masses were observed in the arterial phase of radionuclide angiography are reported. To the authors' knowledge, this finding has not been reported in the literature. In one of the two cases, intense Ga-67 uptake also was noted. Although the preoperative diagnosis based on the findings of nuclear imaging (liver scan, liver flow study, Ga-67 scan), ultrasound, CT, and angiography was hepatoma, hepatic masses in our cases proved

Radionuclide Cisternography Revealed Neck Cyst Formed by Cerebrospinal Fluid Leakage After Cervical Spine Surgery.

A 71-year-old man presented with nausea, vomiting, headache, and neck swelling two months after cervical spine surgery. Initial brain computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed ventricular dilation, suggestive of hydrocephalus. However, radionuclide cisternography subsequently demonstrated cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage into a prevertebral cyst, rather than normal pressure hydrocephalus, thereby confirming communication between the prevertebral cyst and the spinal canal. These findings suggest that the patient's postoperative symptoms were likely attributable to CSF leakage

Assessment of response to PRRT including anatomical and molecular imaging as well as novel biomarkers.

Peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) is an effective treatment for both oncological and hormone control and is a widely accepted standard of care treatment for patients with neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN). Its use is anticipated to increase significantly, and this demands accurate tools and paradigms to assess treatment response post PRRT. This article outlines the current role and future developments of anatomical, molecular imaging and biomarkers for response assessment to PRRT, highlighting the challenges and provides perspectives for the need to focus on a multimodality, multidisci

[Transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy].

Transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) resulting from deposition of transthyretin amyloid fibrils in the heart is an underrecognised cause of heart failure in the elderly and is associated with a poor life expectancy. The diagnosis can now be made by radionuclide imaging with bone tracers, provided absence of plasma-cell dyscrasia. Recent evidence has suggested a considerable prevalence of ATTR-CM, and effective treatment has become available. This review summarises these new developments, which have ushered a new era in the detection and clinical management of ATTR-CM.

Prospective study of anterior chest wall involvement in ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis.

A prospective study of anterior chest wall involvement was conducted in 50 ankylosing spondylitis patients and 50 psoriatic arthritis patients in the absence of palmoplantar pustulosis. All patients underwent a physical examination, tomograms, and a radionuclide bone scan. Magnetic resonance imaging with gadolinium was done in some cases. Half the patients in both groups had anterior chest wall involvement. Enthesitis was the mechanism of the lesions. The manubriosternal symphysis and sternocostoclavicular joints were the most common sites of involvement, although other entheses in the region

[Value of renal scintigraphy in the diagnosis of vascular complications of renal transplantation].

Nuclear medicine can make an efficient contribution to the diagnosis and monitoring of renal disease and to the assessment of therapeutic interventions in the field of renal transplantation. The new radio pharmaceutical MAG 3 labelled with 99mTc provides renal imaging of quality in patients with impaired renal function and enables quantitative evaluation of renal function. We report on radionuclide evaluation, with special emphasis on the analysis of the vascular component of the scintigram, in the different clinical situations (i.e. renal failure) that may compromise the outcome of a successf

Radiophosphate imaging and bone densitometry in renal osteodystrophy.

The histologic features of renal osteodystrophy vary from dialysis osteomalacia to osteitis fibrosa cystica. Commensurate with this, the number of osteoblasts and osteoclasts changes with the stage of the disease; the osteoblasts are virtually absent in dialysis osteomalacia and are numerous in osteitis fibrosa. Radiophosphate accretion in bone increases with increasing osteoblastic activity, and the bone mineral status is determined by the net difference in osteoblastic and osteoclastic activity. The application of radionuclide imaging and dual radiographic absorptiometry mineral measurements…

Nuclear Molecular Imaging of Disease Burden and Response to Treatment for Cardiac Amyloidosis.

Cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is a heterogeneous group of diseases in which extracellular insoluble amyloid proteins are deposited in specific organs and tissues locally or systemically, thereby interfering with physiological function. Transthyretin protein (TTR) and light chain (AL) amyloidosis are the most common types of cardiac amyloidosis. Radionuclide bone scintigraphy has recently become the most common non-invasive test for the diagnosis of TTR-CA but is of limited value for the diagnosis of AL-CA. PET has proved promising for the diagnosis of CA and its applications are expected to expand

Imaging of Ventricular Shunts.

A cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt is an internalized system used for the treatment of hydrocephalus and connects the ventricular system to the peritoneal space, right atrium, or the pleural space. The CSF shunt malfunction can occur due to obstruction, migration, overdrainage, infection, or CSF accumulation at the distal end. Although conventional radiography and radionuclide studies are used for evaluation of integrity of the shunts, computed tomography, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging are used for the evaluation of shunt obstruction, migration, CSF accumulations, infections, overd
