Dapsone (4,4'-diamino-diphenyl sulfone) has been tested for possible carcinogenicity in long-term animal experiments. BDIV rats and C₇ Bl mice received a 3.5% aqueous suspension of dapsone by intragastric intubation. Treatment was started in pregnant females during the last part of pregnancy, continued during lactation, then given to the offspring after weaning, five times a week for 104 weeks. Effects of photoperiod on heat resistance were studied in 88 rats by observing their survival times in a hot environment (42.5 degrees C). Prior to the experiments individual rats were exposed to a given heat (42.5 degrees C) at a definite time of day and a "predicted survival time" in a given heat in individual rats was obtained. Thirty-four rat carcases from 11 poultry farms were examined for the presence of Pasteurella multocida; 14 out of 34 (41 per cent) proved positive after mouse inoculation, compared with five out of 34 (14 per cent) using media alone. No salmonellae were recovered from 27 rat carcases using enrichment media. Poultry pasteurellosis was present on two farms with infected rats and the same serotype was present in rats and poultry in those cases.

An examination of the relationship between the degree of thiamin deficiency and the onset of deficiency induced muricide, revealed that this response appeared abruptly after 31 days of dietary treatment compared to pair-fed or ad lib fed controls. The response was not present after shorter periods of treatment (21 or 26 days). The effects of chronic intake of dietary ethanol upon catalase, an enzyme capable of metabolizing ethanol, as well as upon myocardial morphology and hemodynamics, were studied in the rat. Ethanol, comprising 36% of dietary calories, administered to rats for 5 weeks, was associated with increased myocardial catalase of 45.9 +/- 3.7 IU/mg protein, compared to 21.0 +/- 1.8 IU/mg protein in pair-fed controls. Intravenous infusions of cocaine, in dosages which have been reported to maintain self-administration behavior, were administered to cannulated rats. Ten identical infusions were administered at 6 min intervals within a session. The activity occuriring in the initial minute following infusions was compared to that produced by saline infusions. The elimination of adult parasites from the intestines of rats after a first and second infection of Strongyloides ratti was studied. Expulsion after a second infection was anamnestic, indication that the response is immunologic. Intestinal mast cell responses accompanied damage and expulsion of worms, the secondary mast cell response being more rapid but less intense that the first. Antithymocyte serum suppressed expulsion as well as both the intestinal mast cell and circulating eosinophil responses to primary infection.

Adjuvant arthritis has been studied in young copper-deficient rats and a very strong inhibition of the disease following 60 days of deficient diet (0.4 ppm of copper) was found. No difference in lung prostaglandin synthesis and in rat stomach strip and colon reactivity to exogenous prostaglandins was noticed between controls and copper-deficient animals. These results are briefly discussed.

An intravenous injection of 40 or 65 mg/kg streptozotocin induced not only diabetes but also severe hypertension in rats. Two experiments are reported which show that rats are capable of forming an association between the presence of iron in a solution when it is not specifically needed and a subsequent state of iron deficiency. Specifically, rats were trained to lever press for water while thirsty. One group received ferrous ions in addition to the water.
