OBJECTIVES: Patients with profound cardiovascular compromise have poor prognosis despite inotropic and intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) support. Peripheral venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-A ECMO) offers these patients temporary support as a bridge to various options including the 'bridge to recovery'.
METHODS: We studied the outcomes of 135 patients who underwent peripheral V-A ECMO and concomitant IABP implantation in our hospital from 2007 to 2012 for various clinical indications. The ECMO circuit consisted of a centrifugal pump and an oxygenator.

PURPOSE: Penetrating head injury (PHI) is rare in civilian population and is mostly caused by low-velocity modes. A transorbital penetrating intracranial injury is very rare and more severe than traumatic brain injury.
METHODS: We report a rare case of transorbital penetrating cranial injury caused by a wooden stick. The surgical strategy was planned as the wooden stick was lodged in the right cavernous sinus.

CD can be a cause of diarrhea in pediatric heart transplant recipients. Fulminant colitis can develop in immunocompromised patients with CD and progress to toxic megacolon. We report a case of a 10-yr-old girl who developed CD diarrhea and subsequently fulminant colitis with clinical signs and symptoms of abdominal compartment syndrome.
