Assessment of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) of living surroundings and school environment among adolescent high school students in Northwest Ethiopia: mixed method study.

BACKGROUND: School-based WASH programs in low- and middle-income countries showed significant impacts on health, nutrition and education. Poor WASH practices contributed to malnutrition, anemia, infections, and gender inequities, particularly among adolescents. Inadequate facilities, sociocultural and economic disparities are key challenges. This study aimed to assess the availability, quality, accessibility and practice of WASH in the living surroundings and school environments among adolescent high school students in the study area. METHODOLOGY: This study employed a convergent explanatory

The effects of multi-sensory public seating on emotion regulation in youth communities.

As urban housing pressures intensify, co-living communities are emerging as a new residential model for young adults. However, the high prevalence of depression and anxiety among this population highlights the potential value of incorporating emotional healing design in shared community spaces, particularly emphasizing the potential role of multi-sensory stimuli as a design intervention for emotion regulation. This study investigates the mechanism and evaluation pathway of multi-sensory healing community public seating design in regulating the emotions of youth in shared community spaces. Util

An exploratory study on municipal measures for preventing and addressing incidents of missing older persons with dementia living alone in Japan.

BACKGROUND: It is predicted that the number of older persons with dementia (PwD) living alone in Japan will increase in the future. Consequently, it is also expected that the number of missing older PwD living alone will rise. However, there is little research on missing PwD who live alone. The aim of this study was to clarify the framework of measures that are deemed necessary by municipalities when older PwD who are living alone go missing. METHODS: A mail survey was conducted among 1741 municipalities, and we asked about the necessity of 22 measures to address the issue of missing PwD who

Neighborhood disadvantage, race, and clinical outcomes in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the relationship between neighborhood disadvantage and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The objective is to determine the impact of neighborhood disadvantage on time from symptom onset to diagnosis and annualized relapse rate (ARR). METHODS: Neighborhood disadvantage were captured with the Area Deprivation Index (ADI), a validated measure of neighborhood-level disadvantage. Negative binomial regression models assessed the impact of ADI on diagnostic delay (⩾3 months between symptom onset and diagnosis) and ARR. RESULTS: A

Neighborhood deprivation, built environment, and overweight in adolescents in the city of Oslo.

BACKGROUND: Even though the social and built environment characteristics of neighborhoods have been studied as potential determinants of social inequalities in obesity among adults, fewer studies have focused on children. Our first aim was to investigate whether there were differences in the food and physical activity environments between different neighborhood deprivation levels in the city of Oslo. We also explored whether there was an association between the prevalence of overweight (including obesity) among adolescents and (i) neighborhood deprivation levels and (ii) food and physical acti

Urban green space and mental health among people living alone: The mediating roles of relational and collective restoration in an 18-country sample.

Rates of living alone, especially in more urbanised areas, are increasing across many industrialised countries, with associated increases in feelings of loneliness and poorer mental health. Recent studies have suggested that access to nature (e.g. parks and green spaces) can reduce the stressors associated with loneliness, partly through providing opportunities to nurture personal relationships (relational restoration) and engage in normative community activities (collective restoration). Such associations might vary across different household compositions and socio-demographic or geographical

The association between social deprivation and the rate of identification of individuals at Ultra-High Risk for psychosis and transition to psychosis.

BACKGROUND: There is a higher incidence of psychotic disorders in neighbourhoods of greater social deprivation. However, it is not known whether this represents a causal relationship, as the stage at which social deprivation exerts its influence on the development of psychotic disorders is yet to be elucidated. We aimed to investigate the association between neighbourhood-level social deprivation and the rate of identification of individuals at Ultra-High Risk for psychosis (UHR), as well as the risk of transition to psychosis in UHR individuals. METHODS: The cohort included all young people

The mediating role of housing insecurity in the relationship between neighborhood social cohesion and child maltreatment among low-income urban families.

BACKGROUND: Child abuse has deleterious impacts for children across their lifespan. Understanding the pathways in which child abuse occurs is critical for targeting prevention efforts. The trust and bonds between neighbors may play a preventive role against child abuse, with parents receiving support from those who are geographically close. Such relationships may guard against housing insecurity, which is related to child abuse. OBJECTIVE: The current study examines the relationships between social cohesion, housing insecurity, and child abuse. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The study relies on d

Do multigenerational living arrangements influence depressive symptoms in mid-late life? Cross-national findings from China and England.

BACKGROUND: While living alone predicts depression in diverse ageing populations, the impact of multigenerational living is unclear. This study compared mid-late life depressive symptoms by living arrangements between societies with distinct kinship ties. METHODS: Repeated data on depressive symptoms and living arrangements over 4 years from 16,229 Chinese (age≥45) and 10,403 English adults (age≥50) were analyzed using multilevel mixed-effects logistic regression. Elevated depressive symptoms were identified using the Center for Epidemiological Depression Scale criteria in each study. RESULT
