[A case of dissociative stupor with decorticated posture after neck clipping of brain aneurysm].

We experienced a case of dissociative stupor with decorticated posture in a 71-year-old woman after neck clipping of the brain aneurysm. Decorticated posture is observed with severe midbrain disorder caused by brain herniation. In this case, therefore, severe brain stem damage was suspected, although light reflex was observed and respiration was stable. In addition, in this case, the aneurysm was located at the junction of the internal carotid artery and the posterior communicating artery. Therefore, surgical damage to midbrain was not likely to have happened. Postoperative computed tomography

Novel pathogenic mtDNA variants in Chinese children with neurological mitochondrial disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Pathogenic variations in the mitochondrial genome are tightly linked to neurological mitochondrial disorders in children. However, the mutation spectrum of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in the Chinese population remains incomplete. Therefore, the primary objective of our study was to comprehensively characterize pathogenic mtDNA variants in Chinese children with mitochondrial disorders at clinical, molecular, and functional levels. METHODS: Between February 2019 and September 2023, we analyzed pathogenic mtDNA variants in a cohort of over 600 Chinese children suspected of having mitoch

FT895 Impairs Mitochondrial Function in Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor Cells.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) stands as a prevalent neurocutaneous disorder. Approximately a quarter of NF1 patients experience the development of plexiform neurofibromas, potentially progressing into malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST). FT895, an HDAC11 inhibitor, exhibits potent anti-tumor effects on MPNST cells and enhances the cytotoxicity of cordycepin against MPNST. The study aims to investigate the molecular mechanism underlying FT895's efficacy against MPNST cells. Initially, our study unveiled that FT895 disrupts mitochondrial biogenesis and function. Post-FT895 treatmen

Major Depressive Disorder is Associated with Impaired Mitochondrial Function in Skin Fibroblasts.

Mitochondrial malfunction is supposed to be involved in the etiology and pathology of major depressive disorder (MDD). Here, we aimed to identify and characterize the molecular pathomechanisms related to mitochondrial dysfunction in adult human skin fibroblasts, which were derived from MDD patients or non-depressive control subjects. We found that MDD fibroblasts showed significantly impaired mitochondrial functioning: basal and maximal respiration, spare respiratory capacity, non-mitochondrial respiration and adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-related oxygen consumption was lower. Moreover, MDD fib

Experiences of Persons With Parkinson's Disease Engaged in Group Therapeutic Singing.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that leads to altered neural control of movement, including the control of voice, respiration, and swallowing. There is a prevalent need to provide therapy for voice, respiration, and swallowing difficulties because current pharmacological and surgical treatments do not effectively treat these impairments. Previous research has demonstrated that singing may be a treatment option to target voice, respiratory, and swallowing impairments, as well as quality of life. However, participants' perspectives related to reas

Uncoupling, metabolic inhibition and induction of mitochondrial permeability transition in rat liver mitochondria caused by the major long-chain hydroxyl monocarboxylic fatty acids accumulating in LCHAD deficiency.

Patients with long-chain 3-hydroxy-acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (LCHAD) deficiency commonly present liver dysfunction whose pathogenesis is unknown. We studied the effects of long-chain 3-hydroxylated fatty acids (LCHFA) that accumulate in LCHAD deficiency on liver bioenergetics using mitochondrial preparations from young rats. We provide strong evidence that 3-hydroxytetradecanoic (3HTA) and 3-hydroxypalmitic (3HPA) acids, the monocarboxylic acids that are found at the highest tissue concentrations in this disorder, act as metabolic inhibitors and uncouplers of oxidative phosphorylation. These conc

Psychophysiological effects of breathing instructions for stress management.

Stressed and tense individuals often are recommended to change the way they breathe. However, psychophysiological effects of breathing instructions on respiration are rarely measured. We tested the immediate effects of short and simple breathing instructions in 13 people seeking treatment for panic disorder, 15 people complaining of daily tension, and 15 controls. Participants underwent a 3-hour laboratory session during which instructions to direct attention to breathing and anti-hyperventilation instructions to breathe more slowly, shallowly, or both were given. Respiratory, cardiac, and ele

Reflection on practice: an intubated patient suffering panic attacks.

Panic attacks and respiratory disease have been shown to have probable links; which one is the precursor to the other is unknown. However, what is known is that there is a correlation between high serum carbon dioxide and lactate levels, which are suffocation indicators, and panic attacks. Females are at a higher risk of suffering panic attacks than men, as they have been shown to have a lower tolerance of suffocation indicators. The aim of this paper is to review the relevance of panic attacks within the intensive care unit setting, where a significant number of patients with respiratory dise

Diaphragmatic Dysfunction Is Characterized by Increased Duration of Mechanical Ventilation in Subjects With Prolonged Weaning.

BACKGROUND: Diaphragmatic dysfunction is often underdiagnosed and is among the risk factors for failed weaning. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of diaphragmatic dysfunction diagnosed by B-mode ultrasonography and to determine whether prolonged weaning subjects with diaphragmatic dysfunction have increased duration of mechanical ventilation compared with those without diaphragmatic dysfunction. METHODS: This was a prospective observational study in mechanically ventilated subjects who failed ≥3 spontaneous breathing trials or required >7 d of weaning after the first s

Obstructive sleep apnea in pregnancy: emerging insights into maternal and fetal outcomes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) encompasses a spectrum of disorders ranging from snoring to complete upper airway collapse and cessation of respiration leading to oxygen desaturation and sleep fragmentation. SDB is highly prevalent in the pregnant population, particularly predisposed to SDB because of physiological changes such as hormonal changes, changes to body habitus, and respiratory mechanics due to the gravid uterus. RECENT FINDINGS: The disorder has been associated with adverse maternal outcomes in pregnancy such as gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, impaired

Respiratory-Swallow Coordination in Individuals with Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Swallowing impairment, including altered physiology and aspiration, occur across the progression of Parkinson's disease (PD). The phase of respiration during which a swallow is initiated has been linked to swallowing impairment and aspiration in cohorts with dysphagia following stroke and head and neck cancer treatment, but has been understudied in PD. If similar findings are shown in individuals with PD, the implications for swallowing assessment and treatment are significant. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis of literature was to examine respiratory-

[Respiratory diseases in agriculture and breeding].

Agriculture is a particularly critical field for the health and safety of workers, especially because of the exposure to a variety of risk factors for respiratory system. Organic and mineral dusts, micro-organisms (fungi and bacteria), animal proteins, chemicals (pesticides, disinfectants and toxic gases (NH3, CO, H2S, SO2, NO2 CO2) often cause respiratory diseases in workers in this sector. In Italy, occupational diseases in agriculture have had a record growth--in terms of percentage increase--in the last few years, much higher than other industries (+ 341.8% between 2006 and 2010). This is
