[Wyburn-Mason syndrome].

INTRODUCTION: The Wyburn-Mason or Bonnet, Dechaume, and Blanc syndrome is a rare congenital anomaly formed of malformations of the retinal vessels, orbito-cerebral vessels, and, rarely, facial vessels. CASE REPORT: Male patient, 19 years old, examined because of a severe visual loss and exophthalmos at the left eye. The ophthalmoscopic examination reveals extensive retinal arterio-venous malformations, also confirmed at orbito-cerebral level by ultrasound and MRI DISCUSSION: The Wyburn-Mason syndrome is due to arterio-venous anastomosis, being included in the phakomatosis group. Clinically we…

Are retinal microvascular abnormalities associated with large artery endothelial dysfunction and intima-media thickness? The Hoorn Study.

It has been hypothesized that microvascular dysfunction affects endothelial dysfunction of the large arteries, which may explain the relationship of microvascular disease with macrovascular disease. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship of retinal microvascular disorders with endothelium-dependent FMD (flow-mediated vasodilatation) and carotid IMT (intima-media thickness). A total of 256 participants, aged 60-85 years, 70 with normal glucose metabolism, 69 with impaired glucose metabolism and 109 with Type II diabetes, were included in this study. All participants we

Coloboma of the optic disk associated with retinal vascular abnormalities.

PURPOSE: We studied a case of congenital optic disk pit and coloboma with associated malformations of the retinal vessels. METHODS: Slit-lamp biomicroscopy and fluorescein angiography were performed. RESULTS: Multiple retinal venous anastomoses associated with a congenital coloboma and pit of the optic disk were observed. The retinal vascular anomalies extended from the optic disk to the temporal periphery. CONCLUSIONS: We consider the coexistence of retinal venous anastomoses with optic disk coloboma and pit to be an extremely rare congenital retinal anomaly.

Parafoveal and peripapillary vessel density in pediatric and juvenile craniopharyngioma patients.

We assessed the retinal microvascular alterations detected by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) in pediatric and juvenile craniopharyngioma (CP) patients with chiasmal compression. We included 15 eyes of 15 pediatric or juvenile CP patients and 18 eyes of 18 healthy subjects. The evaluation of vessel density from the superficial retinal capillary plexus (SRCP), the deep retinal capillary plexus, and the radial peripapillary capillary (RPC) segments was obtained by OCT-A. The association between vessel density measures and functional and structural measurements was also analyzed.

Fundus photography as a convenient tool to study microvascular responses to cardiovascular disease risk factors in epidemiological studies.

The microcirculation consists of blood vessels with diameters less than 150 µm. It makes up a large part of the circulatory system and plays an important role in maintaining cardiovascular health. The retina is a tissue that lines the interior of the eye and it is the only tissue that allows for a non-invasive analysis of the microvasculature. Nowadays, high-quality fundus images can be acquired using digital cameras. Retinal images can be collected in 5 min or less, even without dilatation of the pupils. This unobtrusive and fast procedure for visualizing the microcirculation is attractive to

Retinal Microvascular Abnormalities Predict Clinical Outcomes in Patients with Heart Failure.

BACKGROUND: Narrower retinal arterioles and wider retinal venules have been associated with the incidence of heart failure (HF). However, whether they are predictive of the prognosis of heart failure (HF) is unclear. We aimed to explore the role of retinal vessel calibers in predicting long-term clinical outcomes of HF. METHODS: This is a prospective, single-center, observational study that surveyed patients in a tertiary referral hospital for the treatment of HF. Retinal vessel caliber was graded using retinal photography. The primary endpoint was the composite endpoint of HF rehospitalizati

Aquaporin 1 expression in control and pathological rat retina.

Aquaporin 1 (AQP1) is a transmembrane channel protein, present in various tissues including ocular tissues. It carries water and regulates cations flow across membranes. Experimental laser photocoagulation in rat retina induces reproducible injuries mimicking some angiogenic features of ocular pathologies, such as subretinal neovascularization and gliosis. This experimental model enables the study of repair mechanisms following these lesions. Our study was designed to observe the potential changes of AQP1 expression in such processes. We performed immunohistochemical AQP1 co-immunostaining com

Optociliary veins.

Optociliary veins occur in three clinical settings: in chronic central retinal vein obstruction, with retro-orbital tumors, and as congenital anomalies. In the last setting, associated anomalies of the disc and retinal vessels may be present, which makes differentiation from the first two difficult. Fluorescein angiography may be of value in making this differentiation for, in some if not all congenital OC veins, the direction of flow is from the choroid into the central retinal vein. Two cases are presented in which a congenital optociliary vein was present in association with a fundus pictur…

Abnormal blood vessels on the optic disc.

Twenty-five patients with abnormal blood vessels on the optic nerve head were examined both clinically and with fluorescein angiography to determine the diagnostic significance of these abnormal vessels. Six patients had congenital abnormal vessels--prepapillary or optociliary arteries or veins, or vessels associated with congenital anomalies of the disc. Nineteen patients had acquired abnormal vessels that were associated with retinal vein occlusion, chronic glaucoma, chronic papilledema, meningioma or vasculitis. The clinical and fluorescein angiographic features that differentiated these gr
