Retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) is a rare disease with unclear etiology, which is characterized by chronic non-specific inflammation of the retroperitoneum. This study was performed to investigate the clinical characteristics, laboratory findings, radiologic findings, treatment and outcome in Korean patients with RPF. Diffuse retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) is a rare inflammatory process. We report on two known cases of RPF, without evidence of involvement of the urinary tract or of the venous system. A computed tomography (CT)-guided biopsy was performed in each case, and the histological findings eliminated other pathological processes, particularly those of malignant origin. In both cases, a therapy with cortisone was instituted, and a follow-up with CT at 6 months has demonstrated a regression of the pathology of more than 50%.

We report a case of severe retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) secondary to lumbar spondylodiscitis caused by infection with Prevotella resolving after antibiotic therapy. Infection is an unusual cause of RPF, and infection in such cases with this anaerobic bacterium has never been described.

Idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis (IRF) is characterized by the progressive proliferation of connective tissue, but it rarely results in the formation of a mass. Clinical and radiologic findings were consistent with retroperitoneal fibrosis associated with pleuro-pericardial involvement. Retroperitoneal fibrosis, proved by surgical exploration and pathology, was discovered in a patient 13 years after 3,000 rad external beam cobalt retroperitoneal radiation therapy for stage I testicular seminoma. Ureteral obstruction resulted in the loss of 1 kidney, necessitating ipsilateral nephrectomy and contralateral ureterolysis. To my knowledge this is the first reported case of retroperitoneal fibrosis occurring after radiotherapy for testicular cancer.
