Spontaneous retroperitoneal haematoma in severe dengue: A case report.

Dengue is endemic in over 100 countries worldwide, predominantly in the subtropical and tropical regions and the incidence has been increasing globally. Patients with severe dengue may develop massive bleeding, disseminated intravascular coagulopathy and multi-organ failure. Bleeding may occur in various body cavities and muscles; however, bleeding in the retroperitoneal space is uncommon. We report a case of a 37-year-old gentleman who presented with a 4-day history of fever associated with chills and rigours. On Day 6 of illness, he complained of left lumbar and left iliac fossa pain which w…

The Adhesive Perinephric Fat Score is Correlated with Outcomes of Retroperitoneal Laparoscopic Adrenalectomy for Benign Diseases.

BACKGROUND: Retroperitoneal laparoscopic adrenalectomy (RLA) possessing unique superiority with minimal abdominal interference is complicated by the status of periadrenal fat, including its quantity and texture. We hypothesized that an adherent perinephric fat predictor, the Mayo Adhesive Probability score (Mayo score), is associated with the perioperative outcomes of RLA. METHODS: This retrospective study included consecutive patients who underwent RLA for the diagnosis of benign adrenal tumors at our institution between 2017 and 2020. Medical records were reviewed to evaluate the associatio

New predictive factors for prolonged operation time of laparoscopic posterior retroperitoneal adrenalectomy; retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is a standard surgical procedure for benign adrenal diseases. Laparoscopic posterior retroperitoneal adrenalectomy (LPRA) has many benefits. However, it is associated with factors such as prolong operation time. The aim of the study was to determine the predictive factors associated with prolonged operation time in LPRA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed data from 284 patients who underwent LPRA between 2014 and 2019 at Asan Medical Center. Then, we analyzed the predictive factors prolonging operation time using multivariate logi

Useful Pelvic Retroperitoneal Neuroanatomy for Benign Gynecologic Surgery: A Cadaveric Dissection.

OBJECTIVE: Knowledge of the retroperitoneal anatomy is particularly important to facilitate surgical procedure and reduce the number of complications. The objective of this video is to demonstrate pelvic neuroanatomic structures and their relationships in the pelvic sidewall and the presacral space in a laparoscopic cadaveric dissection. DESIGN: Case report (anatomic study). SETTING: Medical training center (AdventHealth Nicholson Center, Orlando, FL). INTERVENTIONS: The dissection started with the mobilization of the iliac vessels from the pelvic sidewall to identify the obturator nerve. T

Fetus in fetu in an adult woman.

Fetus in fetu (FIF) is an extremely rare condition in which malformed fetus is found most commonly in the retroperitoneum of living twin. It occurs in about 1 in 500 000 live births and less than 200 cases have been reported in medical literature. We report FIF in a 17-year-old woman unlike other cases which were usually detected in early age and in male gender. This is the eighth case of adult FIF and the first case of FIF in adult woman worldwide. Preoperative diagnosis of FIF on CT was made and planned for exploratory laparotomy. The excised malformed fetus in a sac was proven as FIF on the

Solitary fibrous tumor arising from pelvic retroperitoneum: A report of two cases and a review of the literature.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFT) rarely arise in the pelvis. Here, we report two cases of SFT arising from the pelvic retroperitoneum. The first case involves a 64-year-old woman diagnosed with a 5-cm pelvic mass. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a solid and cystic mass with marked enhancement, but limited water restriction. During surgery, intraligamental tumor arising near the round ligament was resected. Pathologically, the tumor comprised dilated vessels and spindle-shaped cells positive for STAT6 and CD34. The second case involves a 53-year-old woman diagnosed with a 4.5-cm pelvic mass th

Laparoscopic surgery for primary ovarian and retroperitoneal hydatid disease: A case report.

RATIONALE: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a parasitic zoonosis caused by echinococcus larvae. Manifestations of the disease include a severe damage to the liver and lung. Damages to the mesentery, omentum, spleen, brain, heart, bone, thyroid, kidney, and uterus are rarely observed. Moreover, primary ovarian and retroperitoneal hydatid disease is extremely rare, and is easily ignored or misdiagnosed. PATIENT CONCERNS: We present a case of CE in a 34-year-old female who presented with an adnexal mass detected by B-ultrasound. Adnexal and retroperitoneal masses were removed by laparoscopic surger

Preliminary embryological study of the radiological concept of retroperitoneal interfascial planes: what are the interfascial planes?

PURPOSE: Recently, the radiological concept of retroperitoneal interfascial planes has been widely accepted to explain the extension of retroperitoneal pathologies. This study aimed to explore embryologically based corroborative evidence, which remains to be elucidated, for this concept. METHODS: Using serial or semi-serial transverse sections from 29 human fetuses at the 5th-25th week of fetal age, we microscopically observed the development of the retroperitoneal fasciae and other structures in the retroperitoneal connective tissue. A hypothesis for the formation of the interfascial planes

Pelvic and retroperitoneal hydatid cysts superinfected with Brucella sp. and review of infected hydatid cysts.

Hydatid disease is a zoonotic infection resulting from the tissue infestation of the larval stage of the parasite Echinococcus granulosus. Hydatid cysts superinfected with pyogenic organisms have been reported previously. Brucellosis is more prevalent in people with close contact to animals and those consuming fresh milk or fresh milk products. Although these two disorders have some similar epidemiological features, we did not encounter any hydatid cyst cases superinfected with Brucella species (sp.) in a search of medical literature (Pubmed). Here, we present a case of hydatid cyst disease su

[Eight cases of calcific retropharyngeal tendinitis/retropharyngeal calcific tendinitis].

Calcific retropharyngeal tendinitis/retropharyngeal calcific tendinitis is an inflammation of the longus colli muscle caused by calcium hydroxyapatite crystal depositon in the longus colli muscle tendon. The three major symptoms are neck pain, limitations of neck movement, and swallowing pain. We treated 8 cases of calcific retropharyngeal tendinitis/ retropharyngeal calcific tendinitis. Each patient complained of neck pain, limitations of neck movement, and swallowing pain. The only local finding was the smooth swelling of the posterior pharyngeal wall. CT imaging showed calcification of the

Retroperitoneal pulmonary choristoma in a newborn calf.

A newborn male Romagnola calf, who had died a few hours after birth, was submitted for postmortem examination. Necropsy revealed a 23 cm × 22 cm × 5 cm, pale pink, lobulated, elastic, partially fluctuant mass that protruded from the dorsal retroperitoneal space into the abdominal cavity, extending from the diaphragm to the left kidney. The mass consisted of mature pulmonary tissue and was consistent with a pulmonary choristoma. The gross and microscopic appearance of this rare tumor-like congenital lesion and the possible pathogenesis are discussed.

IgG4-related disorder of the retroperitoneum resembling Castleman's disease plasma cell type: a report of 2 cases.

This study reports 2 cases of IgG4-related disorder of the retroperitoneum resembling plasma cell type of Castleman's disease. A single lesion was located in the renal hilum and ureter, respectively, in these 2 cases. Histologically, both lesions were characterized by reactive follicular hyperplasia with active germinal centers and a sheet of polyclonal mature plasma cells in the interfollicular area. The prominent sclerosis and/or fibrosis, which were characteristic histological findings of IgG4-related disorders, were absent. However, immunohistochemical study demonstrated numerous IgG4+ pla

Retroperitoneal endoscopic release in the management of celiac artery compression syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Celiac artery compression syndrome (CACS) can be treated successfully by division of the median arcuate ligament and celiac plexus fibers. The standard technique is the open approach by an upper midline or left subcostal incision. Only six single cases in which a laparoscopic transabdominal approach for CACS was used have been reported. We prospectively evaluated the feasibility of the endoscopic retroperitoneal approach for treatment of CACS. METHODS: All patients with symptoms suggestive of CACS were evaluated using splanchnic duplex ultrasound scanning, gastric exercise tonom

Retroperitoneal Castleman's tumor and paraneoplastic pemphigus: report of a case and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Castleman's disease is a rare lymphoproliferative syndrome. Its etiology and pathogenesis are unclear. The disease can be occasionally associated with a paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP), an autoimmune mucocutaneous disorder commonly seen in neoplasms of lymphocytic origin. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 63-year old male patient who was referred for surgical treatment of a lately diagnosed retroperitoneal pelvic mass. The patient had been already treated for two years due to progressive diffuse cutaneous lesions histologically consistent with lichen ruber verucosus and pem
