In the AA's opinion the greatest number of rhinitis cases seen in the doctor's office are vasomotor rhinitis. The vasomotor response being determined because of the hyper-reactivity of the subject in face of several agents. After explanations of the fundamentals of their theory a perusal of the more frequent etiologies and differential symptoms are listed. The paper ends with a summary of the medications available, their pharmacologic activity and their respective indications.

The microscopic lesions in the nasal cavity, nasal bones, and infraorbital sinuses of five budgerigars with chronic upper respiratory tract infection are described. All five had chronic inflammation of the lining of the air spaces within the bones surrounding the nares and infraorbital sinuses.

The turbinates of 38 patients with chronic rhinitis were examined biochemically for oestrogen and progesterone receptors. Low levels of oestrogen-receptor-like activity (1-20 fmol/mg protein) were found in 50% of patients of both sexes. Progesterone receptor activity was also weak (1-16 fmol/mg protein) but was present only in 5 female patients. Immunocytochemical assay failed to demonstrate focal areas of oestrogen receptor activity. One juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma was negative for both oestrogen and androgen receptors. Other possible mechanisms of hormonal action are considered.

A single capsule of sustained release pseudoephedrine (SUDAFED S.A., Burroughs Wellcome Co.) was shown by objective and subjective measurements to be superior to placebo in relieving nasal congestion associated with allergic rhinitis. The drug had no discernible effect on (1) the degree of wetness perceived in the mouth or nose, (2) a complex of symptoms which included sneezing, coughing, sniffing, swallowing, itching of eyes and nose or (3) number of nose blows. The study was marked by an absence of serious adverse reactions.

A double-blind, crossover study was performed with a new topical aerosol steroid, flunisolide, administered every 12 hours over a period of eight weeks to 36 adult patients with perennial allergic rhinitis. During the treatment period the majority of patients had significant relief of symptoms as compared with the placebo period. Most prominent improvement occurred with the symptoms of nasal stuffiness, sneezing, rhinorrhea and the number of times patients had to blow their noses.
