Induction of immunological tolerance by oral administration of nickel and chromium.

Oral administration of nickel-chromium to guinea pigs by way of a fixed occlusal splint, or the incorporation of metallic powder or salts into the pelleted food, did not induce hypersensitivity to these metals. In addition, a subsequent attempt to immunize the pre-treated guinea pigs failed in most animals, whereas non-pre-treated guinea pigs became clearly hypersensitive. These results show that oral administration of nickel and chromium induced a state of (partial) tolerance to both metals.

Stress responsive gene regulation in relation to hydrogen sulfide in plants under abiotic stress.

Plants often face a variety of abiotic stresses, which affects them negatively and lead to yield loss. The antioxidant system efficiently removes excessive reactive oxygen species and maintains redox homeostasis in plants. With better understanding of these protective mechanisms, recently the concept of hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) and its role in cell signaling has become the center of attention. H2 S has been recognized as a third gasotransmitter and a potent regulator of growth and development processes such as germination, maturation, senescence and defense mechanism in plants. Because of its g

The resilience of Salmonella to bile stress is impaired due to the reduced efflux pump activity mediated by the antioxidant enzyme YqhD.

UNLABELLED: Bile salts play a critical role in modulating the host gut. They possess antimicrobial properties wherein they disrupt the bacterial membrane and produce reactive oxygen species (ROS), causing DNA damage. Pathogens like Salmonella regulate their metabolic activity to counteract the effects of bile. This study investigates the role of YqhD, an aldehyde reductase, in Salmonella's bile salt susceptibility. Our findings reveal increased survival of the yqhD mutant in the in-vitro studies in LB media with bile, liver cell line HepG2 and C57BL/6 mice on treatment with 8% sodium cholate i

Identification of salt-resilient cotton genotypes using integrated morpho-physiological and biochemical markers at the seedling stage.

Soil salinity drastically hinders cotton productivity (Gossypium hirsutum), and fiber quality. The current study evaluated morpho-physiological and biochemical responses of fifty cotton genotypes under different salinity levels (control, 12 dS/m, and 17 dS/m) at the seedling stage. The experiment was performed in a factorial complete randomized design with three replications. Significant genotype × treatment interactions were observed for most traits, including shoot length (SL), root length (RL), fresh and dry shoot weight (FSW, DSW), fresh and dry root weight (FRW, DRW), total soluble protei

Microbial Dream Team: Cotton Performs Better in Salty Soil with Pseudomonas hunanensis RT-12 and Staphylococcus caprae DS-2.

Salinity is a major abiotic constraint that limits crop productivity, particularly in salt-affected soils. This study explores the synergistic potential of two rhizosphere-derived bacterial strains, Staphylococcus caprae DS-2 and Pseudomonas hunanensis RT-12, in enhancing salinity tolerance in Gossypium hirsutum (cotton). Both isolates exhibited notable halotolerance and multiple plant growth improving traits, including indole-3-acetic acid biosynthesis, phosphate solubilization, ammonia and siderophore production, catalase and protease activity, and hydrogen cyanide production. Multicomponent Reaction: Pd/Cu-Catalyzed Borocarbonylation of Aryldiazonium Salts with Aliphatic Terminal Alkynes to gem-Bis(boryl) Ketones.

We report the development of Pd/Cu-catalyzed selective 2,1-borocarbonylation reactions of aliphatic terminal alkynes with aryldiazonium salts and B2 Pin2 to prepare gem-bis(boryl) ketones in one-pot. A series of corresponding products are obtained with good to excellent yields under a carbon monoxide atmosphere (10 bar). In addition, wide functional-group tolerance can be observed. Preliminary mechanistic studies reveal that ethyl acetate serves as a proton source in the reaction.

DMSO-Promoted Difluoroalkylation of Organophosphonium Salts with Difluoroenol Silyl Ethers.

An efficient method for the synthesis of β,β-di(hetero)aryl-α,α-difluorinated ketones using readily available organophosphonium salts and difluoroenol silyl ethers has been developed. This mild reaction features a good functional group tolerance, a scaled-up synthesis, and synthetic simplicity. By taking advantage of DMSO as a less-toxic promoter and solvent for the difluoroalkylation and C-P bond functionalization, the use of transition-metal catalysts and sensitive additives could be avoided.

Functions of Basic Helix-Loop-Helix (bHLH) Proteins in the Regulation of Plant Responses to Cold, Drought, Salt, and Iron Deficiency: A Comprehensive Review.

Abiotic stresses including cold, drought, salt, and iron deficiency severely impair plant development, crop productivity, and geographic distribution. Several bodies of research have shed light on the pleiotropic functions of BASIC HELIX-LOOP-HELIX (bHLH) proteins in plant responses to these abiotic stresses. In this review, we mention the regulatory roles of bHLH TFs in response to stresses such as cold, drought, salt resistance, and iron deficiency, as well as in enhancing grain yield in plants, especially crops. The bHLH proteins bind to E/G-box motifs in the target promoter and interact wi

Effect of salinity on temephos toxicity to larvae of Aedes sollicitans (Diptera: Culicidae).

Aedes sollicitans (Walker) (Diptera: Culicidae) is an important vector of eastern equine encephalitis as well as several other mosquito-borne brain fevers. The larvae are salt-tolerant and develop in salt marshes with highly varying salinity. The effect of salinity on the toxicity of one of the major larvicidal organophosphates, temephos, was evaluated in two groups of larvae raised either in freshwater or water with salinity ranging from 1 to 3.5%. When larvae were raised in freshwater, low salinity (1-3.5%) decreased the toxicity and high salinity (5%) increased the toxicity. In contrast, sa

The conditions required to isolate and maintain viable cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) microspores.

Cultural systems developed for the successful production of haploid plants from anther and microspore culture of a number of species are lethal to cotton microspores. Components of these systems were examined individually and in simple combinations to determine their specific effect on cotton microspore viability during isolation and culture. An organically buffered pH of 7.0 was critical for survival. The addition of potassium salts, near standard concentrations used for other species, enhanced survival and the cytoplasmic appearance of isolated microspores. Severe toxicity resulted from ammo

Location-specific ecotoxicological risk assessment of metal-polluted soils.

When chemical analysis indicates metal pollution, a second-tier method is needed to evaluate whether toxic effects occur at the polluted sites. A method based on pollution-induced community tolerance (PICT) was developed using samples taken from locations polluted with sewage more than 20 years ago. Microorganisms extracted from soil samples were exposed to a concentration range of zinc, nickel, copper, chromium (III), or chromium (VI) salts in a buffer suspension. The remaining activity of the intoxicated microorganisms was determined by color formation with 31 different organic substrates in

Diet and Atherosclerosis Prevention: Rethinking the Significance of "The Japan Diet".

Although the mortality rate from cardiovascular disease (CVD) in Japan remains lower than that in Western countries, the need for the prevention of atherosclerotic diseases still merits emphasis. Cardiovascular disease develops due to the accumulation of risk factors such as visceral obesity, impaired glucose tolerance and diabetes, dyslipidemia, metabolic dysfunction associated with steatotic liver disease, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease. Dietary therapy must comprehensively improve these factors through the intake of nutrients and food components. This narrative review aims to conf
