A new principle in constructing molecular complexes from the known high-resolution domain structures joining data from NMR and small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements is described. Structure of calmodulin in complex with trifluoperazine was built from N- and C-terminal domains oriented based on residual dipolar couplings measured by NMR in a dilute liquid crystal, and the overall shape of the complex was derived from SAXS data. The fractal dimension, Df, of aggregates in a dilute BSA system with added salt was evaluated by static light scattering (SLS). A fractal structure was observed for the system with NaCl addition. The values of Df increased with increasing heating time and ionic strength. The values of Df were larger than those (Df = 1.8 or 2.1) predicted by the conventional cluster-cluster aggregation model, probably due to a "restructuring" of aggregates during the aggregation process. On the other hand, a fractal structure was not apparent for the system with added CaCl2.

The effect of carbohydrate on the conformation and chain dimensions of mucous glycoproteins was investigated by using light-scattering and circular dichroism studies of native, asialo, and deglycosylated (apo) ovine submaxillary gland mucin (OSM). OSM is a large glycoprotein that is extensively O-glycosylated by the disaccharide alpha-NeuNAc(2-6)alpha-GalNAc-O-Ser/Thr. We report the novel assembly method of CdSe quantum dot (QD)/pyridine/multi-walled carbon nanotube (CdSe-py-MWNT) hybrid material between electrodes using two-step dielectrophoresis (DEP). A sensitive QDs-based RLS assay method for the detection of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) antibody has been developed.
