Measuring decentering in self-reports: Psychometric properties of the experiences questionnaire in a German sample.

Decentering is described as referring to one's current mental experiences from an objective perspective. This study presents a psychometric evaluation of a German version of the Experiences Questionnaire (EQ-D), a self-report instrument designed to measure decentering. Confirmatory factor analysis on a sample of 506 university students indicates acceptable-to-good model fit (χ(2)=58.3; TLI=.92; CFI=.95; RMSEA=.067) for a second-order factor Overall Decentering comprising the two first-order factors Accepting Self-Perception and Distanced Perspective. Listening to children imagining gender: observing the inflation of an idea.

Using three of the clinical articles in this special issue of the Journal of Homosexuality as examples, the author attempts to show how their views of gender may influence clinicians' conceptualizations and treatment choices in response to children diagnosed with gender identity disorder (GID), or gender dysphoria. In particular the author argues that the belief that gender is a psychophysiological entity that is organismic and transhistorical, that is, the view known lately as essentialism, promotes more invasive interventions (e.g., endocrinological and surgical) and mistakenly deemphasizes

The Beck Depression Inventory: item order and the impact of response sets.

The lack of subtle content in the item groups of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the consistency in the ordering of the items from least to most pathological make this instrument unduly susceptible to either defensive or malingering response sets. Two experimental forms were developed for the BDI: a backwards version (a simple reversal of the order of items within each group) and a random-order version. These forms, together with the original item order, were given to college undergraduate women along with the Depression scale from the MMPI and the Burks-Martin Questionnaire covering r

Self-assessment of profile and body image among orthognathic surgery patients before and two years after surgery.

Ninety patients undergoing surgery at two major university hospitals completed self-ratings of their profile, perceived deviations from the ideal profile, and a measure of body image. Identical measures were obtained presurgically and two years following surgery. Patients diagnosed with mandibular hypoplasia perceived themselves significantly more prognathic on the maxillary dimension and most retrognathic on the mandibular dimension; their self-drawings reflected a shorter vertical dimension. These perceptions approached the normal range at the postsurgical assessment. Patients treated for ma

The Body as a Battlefield: Identity Development and Psychosomatic Expression in Eating Disorders Across Childhood and Adolescence.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Eating disorders (EDs) frequently emerge during critical stages of childhood and adolescence, when identity development and emotional regulation are still maturing. Disturbances in self-concept clarity and identity integration may transform the body into a symbolic battlefield for autonomy, belonging, and self-worth. This review synthesizes developmental, psychosocial, neurocognitive, and therapeutic perspectives on the role of identity disturbance in EDs. METHODS: A narrative review was conducted (2010-2025) using combinations of terms related to identity, self-concept

Autonomy in robots and other agents.

The word "autonomous" has become widely used in artificial intelligence, robotics, and, more recently, artificial life and is typically used to qualify types of systems, agents, or robots: we see terms like "autonomous systems," "autonomous agents," and "autonomous robots." Its use in these fields is, however, both weak, with no distinctions being made that are not better and more precisely made with other existing terms, and varied, with no single underlying concept being involved. This ill-disciplined usage contrasts strongly with the use of the same term in other fields such as biology, phi

Toward a More Nuanced Perspective on Detachment: Differentiating Schizoid and Avoidant Personality Styles through Qualities of the Self-Representation.

Avoidant personality disorder was introduced in DSM-III (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 1980), and debate persists regarding the utility of having two separate variants of the "detached personality." The present study addressed this issue through ratings of open-ended self-descriptions provided by community adults with high scores on schizoid versus avoidant personality traits (N = 229). The self-concept of individuals with avoidant personality style reflected a lack of positive self-regard and low self-efficacy/agency. Regarding schizoid personalities, neither positive nor negative s

The Self and alien self in psyche and soma.

This paper compares presentations of disorders of the sense of body ownership and agency from psychoanalytic and neurological perspectives to demonstrate similarities in symptomatology proposing these similarities arise from adjustments in Friston's generative model of self-organization and selfhood. The implications for the analytic model of the Self, for clinical practice and for neuroscience research are considered. Patients with narcissistic disorders use projective defences resulting in a disordered sense of what belongs to whom. This applies to mind and body of self and other and is cent

Examination of a theoretical model for oral health-related quality of life among youths with cleft.

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated relationships among physical and psychological indicators and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQOL) in youths with cleft. METHODS: We recruited youths aged 7 to 18 years with cleft palate (n = 282) or cleft lip and palate (n = 918) and their caregivers into a 5-year observational investigation at 6 US treatment centers from 2009 to 2011. At baseline, youths completed surveys to assess psychological status. After clinical evaluation, 433 youths received a recommendation for surgery. We developed structural models from the baseline data incorporating age, gender,

The role of self-assessment in the formation of communication style in middle school children.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence (ages 14-15) is a critical period for the formation of self-concept and communicative competence. While previous research has explored these constructs independently, the relationship between self-esteem and communication styles in the context of gender and regional factors remains insufficiently studied, particularly within standardized educational frameworks. METHODS: This study utilized the 'I-psychodiagnostics.kz' SMART platform to assess 303 students (N = 303) using the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale and the Children's Assertive Behavior Scale (CABS).

Virtual reality nature exposure reduces self-criticism and shows trends toward enhanced self-compassion: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Building on the therapeutic potential of nature exposure and the increasing accessibility of immersive virtual reality (VR), this study investigates whether custom-designed VR environments-specifically a virtual forest and a virtual city-can differentially influence self-compassion, self-criticism, self-protection, and perceived stress. OBJECTIVE: This randomized controlled trial aimed to evaluate the psychological impact of VR nature exposure compared to VR urban exposure on self-related emotional processes in a non-clinical adult sample. This study extends our previous pilot wor

Differentiating Scrupulosity and Religiosity: The Mediating Role of Fear of Self, Inferential Confusion, and Obsessive Beliefs in Mental and Contact Contamination.

This study explores the distinct roles of religiosity and scrupulosity in relation to cognitive factors-obsessive beliefs, fear of self, and inferential confusion-across contact and mental contamination (MC). Unlike prior research, it examines how religiosity and scrupulosity differentially predict contamination concerns through these cognitive factors. A sample of 235 undergraduates (83.4% female, M = 18.84 years) completed self-report measures assessing contamination types, scrupulosity, religiosity, fear of self, inferential confusion, and obsessive beliefs. Results showed that scrupulosity

The role of self-compassion in adults with dyslexia.

The emotional aspect of dyslexia has recently received more attention. A growing body of literature highlights the links between dyslexia and self-perception (such as self-esteem and self-efficacy) and psychopathology (such as anxiety). However, there is no research on self-compassion in adults with dyslexia. The current study aimed to examine the role of self-compassion in relation to self-esteem, self-efficacy and anxiety in adults with dyslexia. We investigated whether facets of self-compassion have distinct roles within these relationships. We also aimed to identify whether self-compassion

An examination of trauma narratives: Narrative rumination, self-reflection, and identity in young adulthood.

INTRODUCTION: Trauma has the potential to challenge the self and identity development in ways unlike other personal experiences and, undoubtedly, necessitates meaning-making. The purpose of this study is to expand understanding of how young adults make meaning of traumatic experiences and how those processes, either adaptive self-reflection, meaning-making, or narrative rumination, relate to identity development. METHODS: Using qualitative methods and self-report measures, we examined reflective and ruminative narrative processes in 32 trauma narratives written by a sample of young adults. Na

A process that can throw light on the so-called ‘fear of self’ in obsessive-compulsive disorder: the Retrospective Identification of Motivations and Inclinations.

In recent years, to better understand the psychopathology of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), increasing attention has been paid to the so-called ‘fear of self’, that is the fear of people with OCD of housing in their inner unacceptable aspects of Self. However, the exact dynamics of the phenomenon is still unclear: to better clarify it, a specific psychological process, termed Retrospective Identification of Motivations and Inclinations (RIMI), will be described here. When a patient with OCD evaluates his/her inner experience (thought, emotion, imagery, etc.) or own behavior in some way a

The rich are different: Unravelling the perceived and self-reported personality profiles of high-net-worth individuals.

Beyond money and possessions, how are the rich different from the general population? Drawing on a unique sample of high-net-worth individuals from Germany (≥1 million Euro in financial assets; N = 130), nationally representative data (N = 22,981), and an additional online panel (N = 690), we provide the first direct investigation of the stereotypically perceived and self-reported personality profiles of high-net-worth individuals. Investigating the broad personality traits of the Big Five and the more specific traits of narcissism and locus of control, we find that stereotypes about wealthy p
