Psychosocial effects on carers of living with persons with dementia.

A survey of members of the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Society confirmed high rates of psychological morbidity, though not of depression, and social isolation in family carers of persons with dementia. Psychological morbidity in carers was associated with having an affected person at home, the carer being a spouse, demanding problem behaviours, poor physical health in the carer, social isolation, dissatisfaction with social supports, greater use of psychotropic medication, and a deteriorated marital relationship. Carers and patients had high rates of consultations with doctors an

Adolescent substance abuse treatment clinicians' self-help meeting referral practices and adolescent attendance rates.

Clinicians in adolescent substance abuse treatment programs often recommend attendance at 12-Step meetings; however, there has been no systematic study of their referral practices or possible influence on attendance rates. Quantitative and qualitative data were used to examine: (a) the self-help referral practices of clinicians employed in adolescent substance abuse treatment programs; and (b) the potential relationship between practices and self-help attendance. Data were analyzed from open-ended interviews with 28 clinicians at eight CSAT-funded SCY sites and from follow-up interviews with o

Optimizing assessment and treatment for hepatitis C virus infection in illicit drug users: a novel model incorporating multidisciplinary care and peer support.

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated assessment and treatment for hepatitis C virus (HCV) among illicit drug users accepting referral to a weekly HCV peer-support group at a multidisciplinary community health centre. METHODS: From March 2005 to 2008, HCV-infected individuals were referred to a weekly peer-support group and assessed for HCV infection. A retrospective chart review of outcomes 3 years after the initiation of the group was conducted (including HCV assessment and treatment). RESULTS: Two hundred and four HCV antibody-positive illicit drug users accepted referral to a weekly HCV peer-support

Evaluating the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions for individuals with visible differences: a systematic review of the empirical literature.

The objective of this review was to systematically identify and evaluate all known studies testing empirically the efficacy of psychosocial intervention programmes for adults with visible differences. Twelve papers met the inclusion criteria. None of the papers demonstrated adequately the clinical effectiveness of the interventions. The review concluded that further research was needed to demonstrate adequately the effectiveness of existing interventions, and a greater number of Randomised Controlled Trials and experimental studies were required to increase the methodological validity of inter

A randomized controlled clinical trial of a bereavement support group intervention in human immunodeficiency virus type 1-seropositive and -seronegative homosexual men.

BACKGROUND: Bereavement is a severe and frequent stressor among those infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and those affected by the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome epidemic. This study examined the impact of a research-derived, semistructured, bereavement support group among HIV-1-seropositive and HIV-1-seronegative homosexual men having lost a close friend or intimate partner to the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome within the prior 6 months. METHODS: A total of 166 subjects (97 HIV-1 seropositive; 69 HIV- 1 seronegative) were randomly assigned to groups of homogene

Race/Ethnicity and Treatment Outcome in a Randomized Controlled Trial for Trichotillomania (Hair-Pulling Disorder).

OBJECTIVE: Treatment outcome was compared among non-Hispanic White and racial/ethnic minority participants with trichotillomania (TTM), or hair-pulling disorder. METHOD: Symptom severity, quality of life, and TTM-related disability were compared in a behavior therapy trial with a stepped care approach: web-based self-help and then individual behavior therapy. The sample comprised 72% (n = 38) non-Hispanic White participants and 28% (n = 15) minority participants. RESULTS: The ethnic groups responded differently to treatment, with fewer minority participants showing improvement during web-bas

Effects of a modified group intervention with early-stage breast cancer patients.

The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical effectiveness of a psychiatric intervention program consisting of 5 weekly structured interventions and 3 additional group meetings every two months. Previous studies revealed that a 5 weekly structured intervention program was effective for alleviating psychological discomforts in Japanese breast cancer patients, and that the effectiveness persisted for 6 months for patients without lymph node metastasis or adjustment disorders. Since this 5-session intervention did not have persistent effects in patients with lymph node metastasis and/or

[How could self help support patients and families with anorectal malformations?--Psychosocial help offers of SoMA eV].

To be born with an anorectal malformation means to suffer from a rare disease. The afflicted viscera and the consequences e. g. incontinence border on a taboo. In most instances it is necessary to have an interdisciplinary and long-term follow up of the patients. Involved children and their families benefit in a special way from the offers of a self-help organization. The feeling not to be alone helps to cope with the strain situation, as do the presented projects and offers which come up with the special needs of the patients. The everyday experience and capacity of the patients can be used t

Former substance users working as counselors. A dual relationship.

All helping professionals risk participation in "dual relationships." But in the case of former substance users working as counselors, specific dilemmas and problems are accentuated. A qualitative analysis highlights some of the ethical and personal dilemmas faced by these counselors. The data are derived from an interview study initiated in 2000 in Denmark on former substance users with 4-8 years of abstinence. Through an analysis of interview data from a larger group of former substance users, it became evident that those working as counselors experienced specific dilemmas and problems. The

Internet-based treatment of depression: a randomized controlled trial comparing guided with unguided self-help.

Internet-delivered self-help for depression with therapist guidance has shown efficacy in several trials. Results from meta-analyses suggest that guidance is important and that self-help programs without support are less effective. However, there are no direct experimental comparisons between guided and unguided internet-based treatments for depression. The present study compared the benefits of a 10-week web-based unguided self-help treatment with the same intervention complemented with weekly therapist support via e-mail. A waiting-list control group was also included. Seventy-six individual

Using interactive SMS support groups to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission in South Africa: a qualitative analysis of social and psychological benefits.

Although advances have been made in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV, social and psychological factors associated with learning of an HIV diagnosis and living with HIV during pregnancy can impact medication adherence and health outcomes. Mobile technology can increase social support; however, it is unclear if such technology can be used to provide social support to reduce negative psychological outcomes. This study analysed the feasibility of conducting a multi-way interactive SMS-based support group with HIV-positive women in the PMTCT programme in clinics of Tshw

Regional variation in vestibular schwannoma management and patient support group participation across the United States.

PURPOSE: The Acoustic Neuroma Association (ANA) represents the largest existing patient support organization for those diagnosed with vestibular schwannoma (VS) in the United States. Yet, the degree to which the ANA is actually utilized across the country is unknown. Moreover, evidence suggests that there may exist significant regional variation in management practices of VS across the United States. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patient participation in the ANA by state and geographical region, as well as their management approach, was reviewed through a cross-sectional survey performed from Februa

A Survey of Attitudes towards Computerized Self-Help for Eating Disorders within a Community-Based Sample.

BACKGROUND: Bulimia nervosa (BN) is an eating disorder with many physical, psychological and social consequences. Guided self-help (GSH) is recommended in the treatment of BN (NICE, 2004). One of the ways in which to provide GSH is via the internet using evidence-based packages with regular support from a clinician or trained support worker.
