BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence is a public health issue. The prevalence of gender-based violence is high in Sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore, this study aims to produce an overall summary estimate on the prevalence of gender-based violence according to different types and its risk factors among female youths in educational institutions of Sub-Saharan Africa.
METHODS: Studies published in English between 2000 and 2017 were identified by searching electronic databases such as MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, PsychINFO, and other relevant data bases. Three reviewers independently extracted the data and

OBJECTIVES: We examined lifetime prevalence of suicide attempts and psychosocial correlates in a large population-based sample of men who have sex with men (MSM).
METHODS: A telephone probability sample of US urban MSM (n = 2881) were interviewed between November 1996 and February 1998.
RESULTS: Twenty-one percent had made a suicide plan; 12% had attempted suicide (almost half of those 12% were multiple attempters). Most who attempted suicide made their first attempt before age 25. Although prevalence of parasuicide (i.e., attempted suicide) has remained constant across birth cohorts, mean a

BACKGROUND: People who use drugs are at a disproportionately higher risk of mental disorders due to prolonged exposure to psychosocial challenges. However, studies on mental health among people who use drugs in resource-constrained countries are scarce. This study sheds light on the prevalence and correlates of psychological distress among people who use drugs in Cambodia.
METHODS: We conducted this cross-sectional study in the capital city and 11 provinces in 2017. The Respondent Driven Sampling method was adapted to recruit 1677 people who used drugs for face-to-face interviews using a stru

BACKGROUND: Peer navigator programs are central to adolescent HIV service delivery across sub-Saharan Africa, particularly within differentiated and community-based care models. While evidence demonstrates their effectiveness in improving engagement, retention, and psychosocial support, less attention has been paid to the labor conditions under which peer navigators operate. Drawing on feminist political economy, this study examines how peer navigation is organized, experienced, and sustained within resource-constrained health systems.
METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with 30 parti

Stalking has been relatively understudied compared to other dimensions of intimate partner violence. The purpose of this article was to examine concurrent and subsequent intimate partner abuse, strategic responses and symptomatic consequences of severe stalking experienced by battered women. Thirty-five battered women classified as "relentlessly stalked" and 31 infrequently stalked battered women were compared. Compared to infrequently stalked battered women, relentlessly stalked battered women reported: (a) more severe concurrent physical violence, sexual assault and emotional abuse: (b) incr

BACKGROUND: Reproductive coercion and abuse (RCA) is a hidden form of violence against women, involving controlling behaviours by a partner or family member to manipulate a woman's reproductive autonomy, either to prevent or promote pregnancy. It correlates with partner violence, unintended pregnancy, contraceptive non-adherence, and poor sexual and reproductive health. However, research often oversimplifies RCA, treating it as a uniform phenomenon and neglecting its diverse manifestations. Additionally, there is scarce evidence on RCA in low- and middle-income countries. This study examines t

Background: The negative impact of COVID-19 on mental health has been reported by media throughout the world, although this role is not well-understood in low-and middle-income countries (LMIC). We examined the reporting of mental health issues during the COVID-19 pandemic in Bangladesh and initiatives undertaken to support mental health reported from the viewpoint of media. Methods: We reviewed articles published in 10 local newspapers, including seven Bangla and three English newspapers, during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. INTRODUCTION: Increasing rates of overweight and obesity among military service members (SMs) necessitate the implementation of weight management interventions. Evidence for the effectiveness of military weight management interventions is mixed. Effectiveness may be impacted by individual sociodemographic, psychiatric, psychological, and behavioral factors. Baseline data from SMs who were overweight/obese or at risk of failing body composition or physical fitness tests and enrolling in a weight management randomized controlled trial were used to examine (1) individual characteristics of this s

PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to present the Gothenland Millennium Cohort, describe the data collection process, present key measures used and summarise some of the key findings to date in order to stimulate collaboration and use of the cohort data. This research programme was originally established to study pathways to alcohol and drug use, behavioural problems, mental health issues, and the factors that promote or prevent these outcomes. The Cohort aims to support scientific research and doctoral education through a longitudinal study that tracks individuals from early adolescence

BACKGROUND: Violence against women is one of the worst consequences of cultural, political, and socio-economic inequalities between men and women. Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) has been identified as an important cause of morbidity from multiple mental, physical, sexual, and reproductive health outcomes. Nonetheless, the prevalence and related factors of this international problem have not been investigated extensively in some parts of the world. The aims of this research were to determine the prevalence of physical and mental violence perpetrated by men against their intimate partners and t

This article examines an age-old problem-sexual assault-through the lens of its occurrence within the military culture. Specific cases as well as U.S. Department of Defense responses to better handle these issues are offered to educate psychiatric-mental health nurses of the potential differences in symptomatology and presentation of military sexual trauma (MST). This appears to be an increasing problem with the predicted cohort of returning veterans appearing both in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs system as well as in civilian locations, hospitals, community centers, and especially t

Nurses are at considerable risk for work-related violence. This study compared the experiences of work-related violence among registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) to quantify differences in risks and exposures and to gain insight into possible interventions. A random sample (n = 6,300) of licensed Minnesota nurses was surveyed regarding the previous 12-month period. Nurses self-reported violent events and demographic information. After adjustment for potential confounders and nonresponse, LPNs had an increased risk for both physical assault (odds ratio = 1.4; 95% confid
