Psychosocial Well-being of Siblings of Adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is often first diagnosed in the adolescent years. The treatment with the greatest evidence during this time is family-based treatment (FBT). In FBT, siblings are expected to attend treatment sessions; however, sibling well-being during this time has not been well researched. This study aimed to explore sibling well-being when the ill child was initially diagnosed with AN and after FBT had been completed. METHOD: Eighty-five parents and 55 siblings of adolescents with AN completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire at diagnosis. In addition, 88 parent…

Concordance of visual and structural features between siblings with albinism.

PURPOSE: To evaluate similarities and differences in visual function and ocular structure between siblings with albinism. METHODS: The medical records of all siblings diagnosed with albinism were retrospectively reviewed. Comparisons were made using examination at oldest age for younger sibling and examination closest to that age for older siblings. RESULTS: A total of 111 patients from 54 families were studied. Mean age was 12.9 years (range, 2 months to 44.2 years). Mean difference in ages between sibling pair examinations was 11.5 months (range, 0-87 months). Of 45 families, best-correcte…

Foreign body injuries in children: Are the younger siblings doomed?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Foreign body injury (FBI) is a considerable public health issue for children. Although the relationships of FBI with age, gender, and objects of injury have been studied, the extent to which other demographic factors influence FBI is unclear. We hypothesized that the risk for FBI increases with the number of children in the household. DESIGN AND SETTINGS: This was a retrospective analysis of 223 patients aged 2-10 years who presented to the emergency department of an inner-city pediatric hospital and who were found to have FBI. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The guardians w

Siblings with severe pyruvate kinase deficiency and a complex genotype.

Siblings presented as neonates with severe jaundice and transfusion-dependent hemolytic anemia. Next-generation sequencing revealed both to have three heterozygous mutations in the gene encoding erythrocyte pyruvate kinase (PKLR), plus a heterozygous splice mutation in the beta-spectrin gene (SPTB). In addition, both have a different 5th mutation in a gene encoding other erythrocyte membrane proteins. The asymptomatic parents and all three asymptomatic siblings have different sets of these mutations. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Can Burkitt's Lymphoma and Hodgkin's Lymphoma occur in siblings simultaneously?

Familial clustering of Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) and increased risk of developing disease among the siblings has been reported earlier. Usually familial lymphoma in sibling pairs occurs in the pairs of either non-Hodgkin lymphoma or HL. In the familial HL, same type of human leukocyte antigens (HLA) is responsible in the affected family members. There are also some studies stating "Killer cell immunoglobulin like receptor (KIR)" genotypes can be important in the etiology of familial HL. Here we report two siblings; one with Non-Hodgkin and the other with Hodgkin lymphoma which showed Epstein-Barr …

Two Siblings With a CDKL5 Mutation: Genotype and Phenotype Evaluation.

This is the second report of a family with a recurrence of a CDKL5 mutation (c. 283-3_290del) in 2 sisters. Both parents tested negative for the mutation in all tissues, but germline mosaicism is likely. Clinically CDKL5 patients resemble those with Rett syndrome, caused by a MECP2 mutation, who experience a regression, after an initial normal development. Even though both siblings showed a typical CDKL5 phenotype, their presentation is different. From birth, the oldest daughter had a severe developmental delay, feeding problems, and hypotonia and experienced daily refractory seizures. The you…

Possible Familial Presentation in Two Siblings with Carotid Fibromuscular Dysplasia.

Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) is a nonatherosclerotic, noninflammatory vascular disease which can affect the cervical, renal and visceral arteries. Here we report on two sisters diagnosed with carotid FMD at the same age, presenting with similar symptoms of pulsating tinnitus. The familial presentation of this rare disorder attracted our attention and was suggestive of a genetic etiology. Conservative treatment with aspirin was initiated. Carotid FMD is a rare disorder of which the exact pathophysiology is not known. A review of the literature on the clinical presentation, diagnosis and manage

Outcomes in adult life among siblings of individuals with autism.

Little is known about adult siblings of individuals with autism. We report on cognitive, social and mental health outcomes in 87 adult siblings (mean age 39 years). When younger all had been assessed either as being "unaffected" by autism (n = 69) or as meeting criteria for the "Broader Autism Phenotype" (BAP, n = 18). As adults, all scored within the average range on tests of intelligence, numeracy and literacy. "Unaffected" siblings were functioning well in terms of jobs, independence and social relationships. Levels of social relationships and employment were significantly lower in the BAP …

Homozygous STIL mutation causes holoprosencephaly and microcephaly in two siblings.

Holoprosencephaly (HPE) is a frequent congenital malformation of the brain characterized by impaired forebrain cleavage and midline facial anomalies. Heterozygous mutations in 14 genes have been identified in HPE patients that account for only 30% of HPE cases, suggesting the existence of other HPE genes. Data from homozygosity mapping and whole-exome sequencing in a consanguineous Turkish family were combined to identify a homozygous missense mutation (c.2150G>A; p.Gly717Glu) in STIL, common to the two affected children. STIL has a role in centriole formation and has previously been described

Bilateral congenital absence of the stapes superstructure in two siblings.

Middle ear ossicle malformations are an uncommon event. Among them, the congenital absence of the stapes is a very rare condition that is seldom described in the literature. We report the cases of two women, aged 19 and 22 , who presented with a long history of conductive deafness. An exploratory tympanotomy was performed and the absence of the stapes superstructure and an abnormal position of the facial nerve could be observed. A bone anchored hearing aid (BAHA) was implanted in both patients with good results. It is believed that stapes agenesis is related to an abnormal development of the f

Identification of ATM mutations in Korean siblings with ataxia-telangiectasia.

Ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) is a rare autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder. It is characterized by early-onset, progressive cerebellar ataxia, oculomotor apraxia, choreoathetosis, conjunctival telangiectasias, immunodeficiency, and an increased risk of malignancy. Although A-T is known to be the most common cause of progressive cerebellar ataxia in childhood, there have been no confirmed cases in Korea. We report the clinical and genetic findings of Korean siblings who presented with limb and truncal ataxia, oculomotor apraxia, choreoathetosis, and telangiectasias of the eyes. Sequen…

Failure of siblings to thrive beyond 5 years of age.

Thyroidectomy is the most common endocrine surgical procedure being carried out throughout the world. Besides, many patients who have deranged thyroid physiology, namely hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, have to undergo various elective and emergency surgical procedures at some stage of their life. The attending anesthesiologist has to face numerous daunting tasks while administering anesthesia to such patients. The challenging scenarios can be encountered at any stage, be it preoperative, intra-op or postoperative period. Preoperatively, deranged thyroid physiology warrants optimal preparat

Concomitant presentation of alopecia areata in siblings: a rare occurrence.

Alopecia areata (AA) is one among the many causes of non-scarring alopecia in children. Family history has been noted in 10-20% of cases, but concomitant presentation in siblings is extremely rare. The patterns and associations of childhood AA are similar to adults; however, there are some differences which are being highlighted in this article.

Autism in siblings with autosomal dominant nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy.

In 1999, Hirose et al. reported a Japanese family with autosomal dominant nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy (ADNFLE) associated with a neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor α4 subunit mutation (S252L). We followed the siblings of this family, and found that the elder brother had Asperger's disorder without mental retardation (MR) and the younger brother had autistic disorder with profound MR. The clinical epileptic features of the siblings were very similar, and both had deficits in socialization, but their cognitive development differed markedly. It thus seems that epilepsy is the direct ph…

Microcephaly associated with Legg-Calvè-Perthes disease in two siblings.

The co-occurrence of microcephaly and Legg-Calvè-Perthes disease (LCPD) in members of the same family has been previously recorded only in two Hungarian brothers. To study the clinical and radiological phenotype in a (second) family with LCPD and microcephaly, clinical, X-ray and MRI follow-up study of two Albanian siblings aged 8 and 11 years, were made. Both siblings had primary microcephaly, seizures and mild-to-moderate mental retardation. At head imaging the boy was found to have skull asymmetry, partial lack of frontal lobe development and partial agenesis of corpus callosum and the girl…
