INTRODUCTION: An adnexal mass may be diagnosed after a routine pelvic ultrasonographic examination or an emergent hospital admission due to rupture of ectopic pregnancy, adnexal torsion or rupture of tuboovarian abscess. It is necessary to evaluate the origin of the mass initially and to classify patients who need further evaluation and treatment for an urgent condition.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of sigmoid colon rupture due to sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma presenting as acute abdomen with left adnexal mass in a 28 years old woman. Abdominopelvic computed tomography revealed a left a

Situs inversus totalis (SIT) is a rare anatomic anomaly in which organs in the chest and abdomen exist in a mirror image reversal of their normal positions. SIT can complicate surgical procedures, and few reports have described laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer in patients with SIT. Here, we report a case of successful laparoscopic surgery in a patient with SIT and sigmoid colon cancer. Laparoscopic sigmoidectomy involved colonic mobilization with high ligation of the inferior mesenteric vessels and complete mesocolic excision. The operating surgeon stood on the patient's left side, o

Cedecea spp. represent a new member of the Enterobacteriaceae family, and although they are commonly described, they have rarely been reported as causes of invasive infection. The species' inherent resistance to antibiotics makes their management extremely challenging, especially in the context of immunocompromise when infections occur. We hereby report a rare case of Cedecea davisae bacteraemia in a patient with stage IV sigmoid colon cancer followed by a brief review of the literature.

Recent advances in laparoscopic surgery have made it possible to perform restorative proctocolectomy (RP) for ulcerative colitis (UC) or familial adenomatous polyposis (FAC). However, most of these procedures are performed as two-stage operations with the creation of diverting ileostomy. Furthermore, they are performed with a small abdominal incision from 4 to 8 cm in length. We describe the first case of ulcerative colitis that underwent a single-stage completely laparoscopic restorative proctocolectomy without an abdominal incision. The patient also underwent lymph node dissection since he h

A 67-year-old man was admitted for investigation of bloody stools. The sigmoid colon was found to be intussuscepted into the rectum very close to the anus, making reduction difficult. After dividing the peritoneum, the surgeon inserted his hands below the peritoneal reflection along the rectum and pushed the intussusceptum back from the distal to the proximal rectum using a milking action. The rectum was divided 5 cm from the peritoneal reflection, and the sigmoid colon was divided 10 cm proximally from the intussusception. The proximal end of the sigmoid colon was brought out as a colostomy.

BACKGROUND: A new method was developed in order to create a single stoma cutaneous ureterostomy in which both ureters traverse the abdominal cavity and yet are buttressed by the mesosigmoid and covered by its visceral peritoneum.
METHODS: The long mesenterium which is attached to the most mobile part of the sigmoid colon was used for the bilateral ureteral pathway. Tunnels for the ureteral path were made just underneath the visceral peritoneum on the bilateral side of the mesosigmoid. Through the tunnels both ureteral ends were brought from the retroperitoneal space to the mesenterocolonic ju

A man with a history of intermittent blood stained feces for 3 years was found with US to have a 3 cm polyp, presumably of the sigmoid colon. Double contrast barium enema and colonoscopy first missed the polyp, which was confirmed with surgery.

In investigating the occurrence and clinical characteristics of diseases of the large intestine, particularly tumors, the number, distribution, and incidence of the lesions were compared between segments of the large intestine. If the distribution and incidence of lesions are correlated with the length or surface area of each segment, the incidence of lesions will be the same throughout the large intestine. If the lesions are unrelated to length or surface area, the factors that affect the occurrence of lesions must be determined and will be characteristic for each segment. However, the length

A nine year experience with rectosigmoid colectomy during primary cytoreductive surgery for epithelial ovarian cancer is reported. During the period 1979-1987, 20 patients underwent such resections with primary sutured end-to-end anastomosis without a protecting colostomy. Only one of these patients required a secondary colostomy. In a further five patients, anterior resection and reanastomosis was performed concomitant with additional bowel resections, again without diversion colostomy. Subsequent secondary colostomy for a recto-vaginal fistula was required in one. There were two post-operati

The application of mechanic sewing apparatus has obtained significant position in surgery of gastrointestinal tract. The EEA stapler (ILS Proximate) is improved, suitable and useful instrument for the performance of anastomosis after resection, and technically is equivalent to the normal suture techniques. It is especially convenient for the creation of low rectal anastomoses, thus definitive anus preter can be avoided. In 10 cases of rectal carcinoma, anterior resections and stapled anastomoses (3 were below 7 cm from anal border) were applied. In spite of insufficient number of surgically tr
