This prospective study aimed to provide detailed clinical information on a sinus augmentation procedure, i.e., transcrestal sinus floor elevation with a bone block using the press-fit technique. A bone block is harvested with a trephine burr to obtain a cylinder. This block is inserted into the antrum via a crestal approach after creation of a circular crestal window. Thirty-three patients were treated with a fixed prosthesis supported by implants placed on 70 cylindrical bone blocks. The mean bone augmentation was 6.08±2.87 mm, ranging from 0 to 12.7 mm. Only one graft failed before implant p

PURPOSE: In the procedure of sinus floor elevation, autogenous bone, allogenic grafts, and several other bone substitutes are used. However, autogenous bone is still considered the gold standard. Donor sites for autogenous bone are generally the iliac crest, oral cavity, calvarium bone, and tibia. In this work the experience with the use of a Safescraper device for harvesting of autogenous bone is reported and a decision-making algorithm for grafting in sinus floor elevation procedures is proposed.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty sinus augmentation procedures were performed in 34 patients. All s

Maxillary sinus floor augmentation (MSFA) has become the standard technique, aiming to increase vertical bone volume to accommodate standard-length implants, typically 10 mm or longer, with a predictable treatment modality. Data have sparked interest in short implants for patients with atrophic jaws. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the clinical results of short implants compared to long implants with sinus floor elevation. A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library was conducted from inception to June 2025 to identify randomized c…

PURPOSE: Multiple bone augmentation techniques are available to allow implant placement in the atrophic maxilla. However, questions remain, regarding which methods are most predictable and have the best dental implant survival rate (SR) in grafted bone. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate literature from the last 30 years to determine predictability of bone grafting of the edentulous maxilla for implant placement as well as for implant SR.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review was performed of studies conducted during the period 1980 to 2014, specifically focusing on the ed

This case series study demonstrates the possibility of successful implant rehabilitation without bone augmentation in the atrophic posterior maxilla with cystic lesion in the sinus. Sinus lift without bone graft using the lateral approach was performed. In one patient, the cyst was aspirated and simultaneous implantation under local anesthesia was performed, whereas the other cyst was removed under general anesthesia, and the sinus membrane was elevated in a second process, followed by implantation. In both cases, tapered 11.5-mm-long implants were utilized. With all of the implants, good stab

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical success of implants placed in fresh extraction sockets with simultaneous maxillary sinus floor elevation using the osteotome technique. Twelve patients were included. All the patients required the extraction of a maxillary premolar--close to the maxillary sinus--and were scheduled for immediate implant placement. One experimental implant was placed per patient, with an 18-month follow-up period. The graft materials used in both sinus augmentation and peri-implant bone defects were a mixture of collagen gel and corticocancellous porcine bon

OBJECTIVES: The residual alveolar bone height at the implant recipient site plays a key role in determination of the risk of sinus membrane perforation during crestal sinus elevation. In this study, we aimed to determine the correlation between residual ridge height and perforation limit of sinus membrane and to examine the safety range for the sinus membrane continuity in crestal sinus elevation. Formalin-fixed cadavers were used for the experiment to observe outcomes.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: Crestal sinus elevations were performed on 14 preserved human cadavers' heads. Residual ridge heights

BACKGROUND: Sinus augmentation can be performed with or without grafting biomaterials, and to date, there is no quality evidence regarding the augmentation of the sinus floor using only platelet concentrates, which can improve the healing period and enhance bone regeneration by stimulating angiogenesis and bone formation. The main objective of this paper was to assess the effect of the sole use of platelet concentrates in sinus augmentation in terms of newly formed bone, augmented bone height, and clinical outcomes and to assess the additional beneficial effects of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) i

PURPOSE: Sinus elevation procedures have become a routine and reliable way to gain bone volume in the edentulous maxilla for dental implant placement. Presence of bony septations and pathology in the maxillary sinus often cause complications leading to graft or implant failure or both. The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the prevalence of pathology, direction of the septa, and sinus width measured at 2 mm, 5 mm, and 10 mm from the sinus floor in maxillary sinuses using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-two sinuses from 36 random preoperativ

OBJECTIVES: Minimally invasive sinus elevation and augmentation using a transalveolar approach can reduce perioperative complications and patient discomfort. A specially designed reamer accomplishes this without the use of an osteotome or a mallet. The objective of this study is to present this technique with relevant clinical cases and patient outcomes.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Series of reamers with one cutting and one reaming edge were used to prepare an osteotomy site for posterior maxillary areas. A total of 391 osteotomies were prepared with the reamer in 380 patients, and 373 implants wer

PURPOSE: This case report discusses 2 patients who required implant placement in the atrophic posterior maxilla to support a fixed prosthesis with the least invasive and shortest procedure.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The reference standard of care would be to perform sinus augmentation with an autologous bone graft through the lateral approach with delayed implant placement. However, in these cases, the posterior maxillas were treated with an osteotome sinus floor elevation procedure without grafting material and simultaneous placement of short, 8- and 10-mm-long, tapered implants.
