SUMMARY. The present study was undertaken to determine whether a sympathoexcitatory effect would result from a manipulative therapy technique applied to a peripheral joint. The technique selected was a Grade III posteroanterior accessory glide of the right glenohumeral joint with the arm positioned in glenohumeral abduction and internal rotation. Previously, spinal manipulative therapy techniques have been shown to produce such an effect. Nineteen normal subjects participated in the experiment. Treatment, placebo and control conditions were compared. Skin conductance and skin temperature of th…

Numerous body locations have been utilized to obtain an accurate body temperature. While some are commonly used, their accuracy, response time, invasiveness varies greatly, and determines their potential clinical and/or research use. This review discusses human body temperature locations, their accuracy, ease of use, advantages, and drawbacks. We explain the concept of core body temperature and which of the locations achieve the best correlation to this temperature. The body locations include axilla, oral cavity, rectum, digestive and urinary tracts, skin, tympanic, nasopharynx, esophagus, and

BACKGROUND: Although nociceptive afferents innervating the body have been heavily studied form many years, much less attention has been paid to trigeminal afferent biology. In particular, very little is known concerning trigeminal nociceptor responses to heat, and almost nothing in the rat. This study uses a highly controlled and reproducible diode laser stimulator to investigate the activation of trigeminal afferents to noxious skin heating.
RESULTS: The results of this experiment demonstrate that trigeminal thermonociceptors are distinct from themonociceptors innervating the limbs. Trigemin

A fall in skin temperature precipitates a repertoire of thermoregulatory responses that reduce the likelihood of a decrease in core temperature. Studies in animals suggest that medullary raphé neurons are essential for cold-defense, mediating both the cutaneous vasoconstrictor and thermogenic responses to ambient cooling; however, the involvement of raphé neurons in human thermoregulation has not been investigated. This study used functional MRI with an anatomically guided region of interest (ROI) approach to characterize changes in the blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signal within the hum…

BACKGROUND: In patients with chronic venous insufficiency erythematous areas in indurated skin (hypodermitis) and non erythematous areas of lipodermatosclerosis were examined.
METHODS: In 13 patients with venous ulcers a total of 32 localizations in more or less erythematous and indurated ulcer edges were measured. The amount of erythema was taken as an indicator for the extent of hypodermitis. The parameters examined were erythema (a-value), skin temperature (t), laser Doppler flow (LDF), transcutaneous (tcpO2) and intracutaneous oxygen tension (icpO2). According to the amount of erythema th…

For two decades, the incidence and range of sarcoptic mange in black bears (Ursus americanus) in Pennsylvania has increased. The causative agent, Sarcoptes scabiei, can be directly or indirectly transmitted; therefore, data on environmental persistence is important for guiding management and public communications. The objective of this study was to determine the survival of S. scabiei at different temperatures. Full section skin samples and superficial skin scrapes were collected from bears immediately after euthanasia due to severe mange. After ~ 24 h on ice packs (shipment to lab), samples w

Cold water or ice slurry ingestion during exercise seems to be an effective and practical means to improve endurance exercise performance in the heat. However, transient reductions in sweating appear to decrease the potential for evaporative heat loss from the skin by a magnitude that at least negates the additional internal heat loss as a cold ingested fluid warms up to equilibrate with body temperature; thus explaining equivalent core temperatures during exercise at a fixed heat production irrespective of the ingested fluid temperature. Internal heat transfer with cold fluid/ice is always 10

A potential role for bacteria in the induction of rosacea has been suggested. The aim of this work was to characterise the effect of tempera … doxin (325-fold decrease) and peptidase (244-fold decrease). This work indicates that the increased skin temperature of rosacea patients may alter the growth and protein production pattern of B. oleronius and lead to the greater production of immuo-stimulatory proteins.

An increase in plantar pressure and skin temperature is commonly associated with an increased risk of diabetic foot ulcers. However, the effect of insoles in reducing plantar temperature has not been commonly studied. The aim was to assess the effect of walking in insoles with different features on plantar temperature. Twenty-six (F/M:18/8) participants-13 with diabetes and 13 healthy, aged 55.67 ± 9.58 years-participated in this study. Skin temperature at seven plantar regions was measured using a thermal camera and reported as the difference between the temperature after walking with an inso…

BACKGROUND: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been shown to be less effective on the extremities. Protoporphyrin-IX (PpIX) fluorescence and skin surface temperature are variables that have been implicated in the differences in efficacy with body site, but objective studies have not been undertaken.
OBJECTIVES: To further investigate observations from our previous study that temperature and fluorescence during pro-drug incubation are correlated, through a prospective objective investigation of the relationships between fluorescence and skin surface temperature before and during PDT and relationsh

Multi-functional electronic skin (e-skin) demonstrates immense potential for applications in physiological monitoring and human-computer interaction. However, achieving reliable multi-modal sensing in complex environments and hazard alarms for infants remains a significant challenge. Drawing inspiration from the skin's somatosensory system, we herein present an innovative multi-modal sensing organohydrogel, fabricated by incorporating gelatin, laponite, and LiCl into a copolymer network within a glycerol/water binary solvent. The designed organohydrogel exhibits skin-like composition and modul

Acupressure on ST36 (Zusanli), located on the lower leg, commonly used to optimize autonomic nerve activity and systemic blood flow in traditional Chinese medicine. However, its efficacy remains controversial. This study hypothesized that a single acupressure on ST36 attenuates sympathetic nerve activity and mitigate skin vasoconstriction in response to cold stimulation. Twelve participants received either 5-min acupressure or sham pressure in the right ST36; subsequently, their left hand was immersed in cold water (10°C) for 10 min. Heart rate (HR), arterial pressure, skin temperature, and bl…

The authors report the results of autonomic testing in patients with the carpal tunnel syndrome. Galvanic skin response (GSR) and skin temperature measurements in 46 patients and 32 normal controls were recorded and were statistically analyzed by computer. The findings were then correlated with the results of nerve conduction studies and duration of symptoms. Definite sympathetic changes were documented by a temperature increase in the affected index fingers of patients. These changes occurred in six patients who had symptoms for less than six months as well as in patients who had symptoms for…

This study focuses on evaluating the thermoregulatory performance of a graphene-based electric heating cape and determining its optimal temperature for use in cool indoor environments during winter. Through controlled experiments with 30 participants in a climate chamber maintained at 15.5 °C, five heating conditions (no heating, 35 °C, 40 °C, 45 °C, and 50 °C) were systematically tested. Skin temperature and heart rate were continuously monitored, and subjective thermal sensation and comfort votes were collected using 7-point scales. Results demonstrated that the electric heating cape signifi…

In patients with high spinal cord injuries autonomic dysfunction can be dangerous, leading to medical complications such as postural hypotension, autonomic dysreflexia and temperature disturbance. While animal models have been developed to study autonomic dysreflexia, associated temperature changes have not been documented. Our aim here was to use radiotelemetry and infrared thermography in rodents to record the development of cardiovascular and skin temperature changes following complete T4 transection. In adult male Wistar rats (n=5), responses were assessed prior to spinal cord injury (inta…
