A 76-year-old female presented with edema in the bilateral lower legs and computed tomography (CT) subsequently revealed a tumor under the right side of the kidney that extended to the inferior vena cava. Under suspicion of a right renal sarcoma or malignant teratoma, we performed a right nephrectomy and tumor thrombectomy. Histopathological features of the resected specimen were compatible with a leiomyosarcoma originating from either extrarenal blood vessels or muscle fibers of the renal pelvis. Immunohistological findings showed that the tumor cells were spindle-shaped, arranged in bundles,

Calcifying fibrous tumor is an uncommon entity with distinctive pathologic features. Most calcifying fibrous tumors involve the peripheral soft tissues or serosal surfaces, with reports of visceral examples of this lesion being extremely limited. We report the clinical and pathologic features of an unusual case of calcifying fibrous tumor occurring in the adrenal gland of a 32-year-old woman. Microscopically, the lesion was well circumscribed and composed of dense, poorly cellular collagenous tissue, scattered spindle cells, an inflammatory infiltrate consisting of plasma cells and lymphocytes

Micropapillomas/papillomas and complex sclerosing lesions of the breast have been associated with a slightly increased risk for subsequent carcinoma, although benign squamous metaplasia and reactive hypercellular stroma are seen within these lesions. There are few reports of these fibrosclerotic lesions associated with metaplastic tumors. Here we describe a series of metaplastic tumors arising within fibrosclerotic breast lesions. Thirty-three metaplastic tumors associated with fibrosclerotic lesions were selected from a breast pathology consultative practice. Relevant clinical and pathologica

The aim of our review was to identify the current information with regard to the pathogenesis and malignant transformation of adenomyosis. The current literature was reviewed by searching MEDLINE/PubMed, using the following keywords: adenomyosis, myometrium, stromal cells, malignant transformation, pathogenesis, etiology, genome-wide and microarray. Early signs of the development of adenomyosis are considered to be the penetration of stromal cells into the inner layer of the myometrium. Adenomyosis smooth muscle cells are developed, possibly, through a remodeling pathway via reactivation of co

Myopericytoma is a rare, recently described tumor demonstrating a hemangiopericytoma-like vascular pattern. We present two cases of myopericytoma associated with trauma: a 64-year-old man who developed several nodules on his nose four months after sustaining multiple abrasions to his forehead and nose, and a 72-year-old woman with a solitary growth in the alveolar ridge of unknown duration. Biopsy specimens of the lesions in both cases demonstrated a striking concentric perivascular proliferation of bland spindle-shaped pericytic cells characteristic of myopericytoma. Despite sharing morpholog

PURPOSE: Myofibroblasts, which are specifically differentiated fibroblasts, are thought to play a central role in the desmoplastic reaction, a dynamic stromal change closely associated with cancer development. Although fundamental studies suggest that myofibroblasts may either facilitate or inhibit cancer progression, cumulative evidence supports their role in promoting tumor progression. The aim of this study was to assess the value of myofibroblasts in the cancer stroma as an indicator of disease recurrence after colorectal cancer surgery.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Using computer-assisted image

Fibrosis of the peritoneal cavity remains a serious, life-threatening problem in the treatment of kidney failure with peritoneal dialysis. The mechanism of fibrosis remains unclear partly because the fibrogenic cells have not been identified with certainty. Recent studies have proposed mesothelial cells to be an important source of myofibroblasts through the epithelial-mesenchymal transition; however, confirmatory studies in vivo are lacking. Here, we show by inducible genetic fate mapping that type I collagen-producing submesothelial fibroblasts are specific progenitors of α-smooth muscle act

We analyzed the response of uterine smooth muscle cells to interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta). We first showed that PHM1-31 myometrial cells, our cellular model, are contractile. To determine the molecular mechanisms of uterine smooth muscle cell activation by proinflammatory cytokines, we performed genechip expression array profiling studies of PHM1-31 cells in the absence and the presence of IL-1beta. In total, we identified 198 known genes whose mRNA levels are significantly modulated (> 2.0-fold change) following IL-1beta exposure. We confirmed the expression changes for selected genes by indepe

The mechanisms that regulate the diverse responses to estrogen (E2) are unknown. Loss of function of the tuberous sclerosis 2 gene (TSC2), a tumor suppressor gene, has been associated with a growth-promoting effect of E2. We hypothesized that tuberin, the protein product of TSC2, binds to estrogen receptors (ER) and regulates the growth effect of E2. An in vivo association between full-length tuberin and ERalpha was observed in HEK 293 cells and ELT-3 smooth muscle cells. In contrast, poor association was observed between tuberin and ERbeta. Complex formation with ERalpha and the C-terminal en

A 60-year-old woman had a ciliary body tumor that resembled an amelanotic malignant melanoma by clinical examination. The magnetic resonance imaging scan correlated with the clinical diagnosis. Because of apparent rapid growth, her eye was enucleated. However, histopathologic examination revealed a highly vascularized, spindle-cell tumor harboring immunoreactive actin and vimentin. Electron microscopy further supported the diagnosis of hemangiopericytoma with smooth-muscle differentiation. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a hemangiopericytoma of the ciliary body.

We report a case of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) of the stomach mimicking extragastrointestinal origin. The tumor presented as a large isolated mass in the transverse mesocolon with a minor adhesion to the stomach. Microscopic examination revealed c-kit gene protein product (KIT)-positive tumor cells with epithelioid features. The tumor pseudocapsule close to the adhesion site included a small smooth muscle tissue component, indicating a gastric origin. Furthermore, tumor cells at the adhesion site showed prominent hyalinization and calcification. The tumor was diagnosed as a gastric

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a malignant tumor of smooth muscle cells and comprises 5-24% of all soft tissue sarcomas. Although the most frequent symptoms are vaginal bleeding and abdominal pain, the symptoms are generally associated with dimensions and localization of the tumor. The current study presents a case of uterine leiomyosarcoma that metastasized to the rectus abdominis muscle, which has only been previously reported in two cases in the literature. A 57-year-old multigravid patient presented with a palpable mass in her abdomen. The patient's past medical history revealed a hysterectomy pe

The perivascular epithelioid cell has been proposed to be the unifying proliferating cell type in a number of lesions such as angiomyolipoma, lymphangiomyomatosis, clear cell "sugar" tumor and renal capsuloma. With the exception of rare examples of angiomyolipoma, they are non-metastasizing. We report four examples of a new member of this family of perivascular epithelioid cell neoplasms that occur in abdominopelvic location and show metastatic properties. The patients, all women, were aged 19 to 41 years (mean, 32), and presented with a tumor mass involving the serosa of the ileum, uterus or

BACKGROUND: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a DNA virus with oncogenic potential, especially in immunocompromised patients. EBV can promote smooth muscle proliferation, resulting in EBV-associated smooth muscle tumors (EBV-SMT).
METHODS: We report a case of a 10-year-old child with end-stage renal disease secondary to hypoplastic crossed and fused kidneys who underwent kidney transplantation. EBV serology was unknown for the donor and negative for the recipient; three months after he had a primary EBV infection. Two years after the transplantation, percutaneous nephrostomy was performed because o…

Uterine leiomyoma is a benign tumor of myometrial tissue which usually affects women of reproductive age. Its prevalence increases with age and has a peak incidence at the age of 40. Metastasizing leiomyomas are dense connective tissue and smooth myometrial muscle cells tumors located outside the uterus. We present the case report of a 55-year-old female referred to investigate pulmonary nodules with the diagnosis of metastasizing leiomyoma.

Leiomyosarcoma is a malignant tumor of smooth muscle cells that is exceedingly rare in the middle ear and temporal bone. Wide surgical resection is treatment of choice and adjuvant treatment has not proven to be of benefit. This is a report on a patient with otorrhea and rapidly growing mass on postauricualr area. A tumor that was mainly located in the middle ear and temporal bone was surgically removed and proved to be a leiomyosarcoma. The optimal surgical technique and other treatment strategy are discussed.

A small number of gastrointestinal smooth muscle tumors are caused by leiomyoma, which are uncommon in the colon. Typically, these tumors are benign and asymptomatic. They typically affect middle-aged and older populations. They are uncommon, making up about 3% of gastrointestinal leiomyomas. During a screening colonoscopy, a 52-year-old Saudi male revealed a little, 5-mm ascending colon polyp in this case report. The polyp was transported to the pathology laboratory after being removed using a hot snare polypectomy. The histopathology report confirmed the size of the polyp (5 mm), single, fir…

Cutaneous leiomyomas are rare benign smooth muscle tumors that often present as painful dermal nodules; however, they can be asymptomatic too. Histopathology remains the gold standard for diagnosis and warrants screening for Hereditary Leiomyomatosis and Renal Cell Carcinoma (HLRCC) in patients presenting with multiple lesions.
