When the system of self is explored in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs), it is important to measure it via both their own perceptions of the self and their understanding of others' perceptions on themselves at a multidimensional level. This paper reviews existing research in this area using a three-dimension approach. Researchers have found that impairments in the self-system are usually correlated with these individuals' social and cognitive functioning levels: high functioning individuals with ASD who have higher IQ are found to have better awareness of their limitations in

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a frequent neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by variable clinical severity. Core symptoms are qualitatively impaired communication and social behavior, highly restricted interests and repetitive behaviors. Although recent work on genetic mutations in ASD has shed light on the pathophysiology of the disease, classifying it essentially as a synaptopathy, no treatments are available to date. To develop and test novel ASD treatment approaches, validated and informative animal models are required. Of particular interest, in this context are loss-of-function

Mice communicate through audible vocalizations, which are within the human hearing range, and ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs), which are above the upper limit of human hearing. USVs are produced by rodents in social contexts including pup separation, territorial, and courting assays. Like birdsong, an established model for human speech, USVs in mice have been used as a model for understanding human communication. Their utility as a model of social communication is illustrated in neurodevelopmental conditions with a genetic basis, like autism spectrum disorders and Rett syndrome. As mice do not

BACKGROUND: Most outcome studies of occupational injuries and illnesses have tended to focus on direct economic costs and duration of work disability. Rarely have the broader social consequences of work-related disorders or their impacts on injured workers' families, coworkers, and community been investigated. This paper examines a wide range of social consequences including workers' psychological and behavioral responses, vocational function, and family and community relationships.
METHODS: Literature review and development of conceptual framework.
RESULTS: Complex and multifactorial relati

After 1945 the prevailing consensus that persons with serious mental disorders should be treated in public hospitals began to dissolve. It was replaced by a faith in the efficacy of community care and treatment. Yet for a variety of reasons the new community care system fell far short of its initial promise. Advocates failed to understand that the problems of persons with serious and persistent disabilities were different from those people with mild and moderate disorders. The belief that residence in the community would promote adjustment and integration was illusory and did not take into acc

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder, commonly characterized by altered social behavior, communication, biochemistry and pathological conditions. One percent of the worldwide population suffers from autism and males suffer more than females. NMDA receptors have the important role in neurodevelopment, neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. This study has been designed to investigate the role of memantine, a NMDA receptor modulator, in prenatal valproic acid-induced autism in rats. Animals with prenatal valproic acid have shown the reduction in social intera

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by deficits in social interaction, communication difficulties, and repetitive behaviors that profoundly impact the lives of affected individuals and their families. This article provides a comprehensive overview of ASD, focusing on screening, diagnosis, and intervention strategies. Early signs of ASD can manifest in infancy, but parents may not recognize them until their child falls behind in meeting social milestones. This delay in recognition is often due to a lack of awareness, societal stigma, and limite

Schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BD) are characterized by social impairments. Social impairment also occurs in the general community. Across clinical and nonclinical groups social impairment may be related to deficits in social approach and/or social avoidance motivation. However, the neural basis of social motivation deficits in SZ and BD is not well understood, nor is it known if they reflect features of the illness or are secondary to other factors such as social isolation. To fill these knowledge gaps, 31 individuals with SZ, 27 with BD, and 42 community comparisons (CCs) completed

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a severe neurodevelopmental or neuropsychiatric disorder with elusive etiology and obscure pathophysiology. Cognitive inabilities, impaired communication, repetitive behavior pattern, and restricted social interaction and communication lead to a debilitating situation in autism. The pattern of co-occurrence of medical comorbidities is most intriguing in autism, compared to any other neurodevelopmental disorders. They have an elevated comorbidity burden among which most frequently are seizures, psychiatric illness, and gastrointestinal disorders. The gut microb

Auditory processing abnormalities are a prominent feature of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), significantly affecting sensory integration, communication, and social interaction. This review delves into the neurobiological mechanisms underlying these deficits, including structural and functional disruptions in the auditory cortex, imbalances in excitatory and inhibitory signaling, and synaptic dysfunction. Genetic contributions from mutations in CNTNAP2, SHANK3, FMR1, and FOXP2 are explored, highlighting their roles in auditory abnormalities. Animal models, such as BTBRT+tf/J mice (BTBR) and val

Translating to the Community (T2C) is a social biorepository designed to advance new diagnostic tools and realign community-clinical processes, with the aim to mitigate the short- and long-term impacts of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) as well as prenatal alcohol exposure and its co-morbidities and behaviors. In this paper, we describe the evolution of this repository as a new translational partnership to advance a precision-medicine approach to FASD. Key to its evolution was a partnership between academic researchers, Indigenous communities, families, and a regional diagnostic clinic.

Medications can help manage behavioral problems associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but no pharmacological treatment has proved effective for the core symptoms of the disorder. The article by Sprengers et al.1 in this issue of the Journal reports the primary results of the randomized clinical trial Bumetanide in Autism Medication and Biomarker (BAMBI), which tested the efficacy of bumetanide, a loop diuretic acting as a selective antagonist of the chloride importer NKCC1, for the core symptoms of ASD in 92 children 7-15 years of age.1 The study by Sprengers and colleagues was caref

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social communication deficits and repetitive/restricted behaviors. Although gene-environment interactions may explain the heterogeneous etiology of ASD, it is still largely unknown how the gene-environment interaction affects behavioral symptoms and pathophysiology in ASD. To address these questions, we used Cntnap2 knockout mice (genetic factor, G) exposed to valproic acid during embryonic development (environmental factor, E) as a gene-environment interaction (G × E) model. Paradoxically, the social deficits obs

Childhood-onset fluency disorder, the most common form of stuttering, is a neurologic disability resulting from an underlying brain abnormality that causes disfluent speech. Stuttering can lead to significant secondary effects, including negative self-perception and negative perception by others, anxiety, and occasionally depression. Childhood-onset fluency disorder affects 5% to 10% of preschoolers. Early identification of stuttering is important so that therapy can begin while compensatory changes to the brain can still occur and to minimize the chances of the patient developing social anxie

The majority of children with autism show deviance and socially or psychiatrically handicapping conditions throughout life. Only a small proportion of those with classical childhood autism lead independent adult lives. Others, particularly those with 'high-functioning' autism and so-called Asperger syndrome will improve enough to live an independent adult life. The level of mental retardation and other comorbid conditions (such as medical syndromes and other neuropsychiatric disorders, including epilepsy) is important in predicting outcome. An IQ below 50 around school age predicts severe rest

Although both in autism and gerontological research the attention for aging well with autism is growing, little attention has been paid to the impact of receiving an autism diagnosis in later life. This is unfortunate, as nowadays many of the older adults on the autism spectrum have spent most of their lives being unaware of their autism. Drawing on previous research, our combined personal and professional experiences, and the narratives of eighteen older adults diagnosed later in life (aged 60-77, 50% female), we argue that a late autism diagnosis necessitates a fundamental rethinking of agin

Interventions for autism have come a long way since the condition was described by Kanner in the 1940s. At that time, autism was considered to be closely linked to schizophrenia, and inadequate parenting was viewed as the principal cause. Psychoanalysis was often the therapy of choice, but there was also widespread use of the drugs and even electroconvulsive treatments that had been developed for use in schizophrenia. Over the years, as autism has come to be recognized as a developmental disorder, interventions have focused instead on enhancing developmental skills and on ways of ameliorating
