Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on patients with pre-existing anxiety disorders attending secondary care.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the psychological and social impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on patients with established anxiety disorders during a period of stringent mandated social restrictions. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 30 individuals attending the Galway-Roscommon Mental Health Services with an International Classification of Diseases diagnosis of an anxiety disorder to determine the impact of the COVID-19 restrictions on anxiety and mood symptoms, social and occupational functioning and quality of life. RESULTS: Twelve (40.0%) participants described COVID-19 restr

Social value orientation modulates context-based social comparison preference in the outcome evaluation: An ERP study.

Social value orientation (SVO) is a personality trait that is closely associated with social comparison preference. However, little is known about how the different types of SVO (i.e., proself vs. prosocial) modulate the behaviour and neural underpinnings of its interaction with social context. In the present study, we examined electrophysiological correlates captured when individuals with different SVOs engaged in a gambling game with two other players (a socially disliking player, person A, vs. a socially liking player, person B). Three main findings are reported in our study. 1) Social comp

Configurational patterns associated with psychiatric disability among patients with schizophrenia: A fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis.

Psychiatric disability in schizophrenia may reflect the combined effects of clinical symptoms, cognitive impairment, individual resources, and environmental support rather than the influence of a single risk factor. This study used fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis to identify configurations associated with higher and lower psychiatric disability states among patients with stable-phase schizophrenia. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 482 patients with stable-phase schizophrenia. Psychiatric disability was assessed using the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Sch

Social priors and mentalizing connectivity across autistic and schizotypal traits.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD) both involve social-cognitive difficulties but may rely on opposite predictive mechanisms. Predictive-coding and diametrical accounts propose weak priors in ASD versus strong priors in SSD. We tested whether autistic and positive schizotypal traits differentially shape the use of social priors when interpreting ambiguous social cues. Two studies with non-clinical adults employed an adapted Animated Triangles Task (ATT) with three cueing conditions: Random-Uncued, Random-Cued, and ToM-Cued. Study 1 (n = 71) assessed behavi

Modulating chronic outcomes after pediatric traumatic brain injury: Distinct effects of social and environmental enrichment.

Impairments in social and cognitive function are a common consequence of pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI). Rehabilitation has the potential to promote optimal behavioral recovery. Here, we evaluated whether an enhanced social and/or cognitive environment could improve long-term outcomes in a preclinical model of pediatric TBI. Male C57Bl/6 J mice received a moderately-severe TBI or sham procedure at postnatal day 21. After one week, mice were randomized to different social conditions (minimal socialization, n = 2/cage; or social grouping, n = 6/cage), and housing conditions (standard cag…

Social support systems as determinants of self-management and quality of life of people with diabetes across Europe: study protocol for an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Long-term conditions pose major challenges for healthcare systems. Optimizing self-management of people with long-term conditions is an important strategy to improve quality of life, health outcomes, patient experiences in healthcare, and the sustainability of healthcare systems. Much research on self-management focuses on individual competencies, while the social systems of support that facilitate self-management are underexplored. The presented study aims to explore the role of social systems of support for self-management and quality of life, focusing on the social networks of p

Effects of fluoxetine on social behaviour and plasma corticosteroid levels in female Mongolian gerbils.

Gerbils are a highly social species and extremely sensitive to social manipulations. In this laboratory, separating male/female pairs has been found to produce significant effects on these animal's subsequent social behaviour. The present studies were conducted in order to examine the effects of a short period of individual housing in females of this species, as this may also be predicted to produce alterations in social responding. It was found that 21 days' individual housing induced a marked reduction in social behaviour directed towards an untreated male placed in the same arena. This was

Roles of the 5-HT2C receptor on zebrafish sociality.

Serotonin (5-HT) receptors have been implicated in social behavior in vertebrates. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) have been increasingly being used behavioral neuroscience to study the neurobiological correlates of behavior, including sociality. Nonetheless, the role of 5-HT2C receptors in different social functions were not yet studied in this species. Zebrafish were treated with the agonist MK-212 (2 mg/kg) or the antagonist RS-102221 (2 mg/kg) and tested in the social interaction and social novelty tests, conditional approach test, or mirror-induced aggressive displays. MK-212 increased preference

Exploring opportunities with activity-based work in Swedish public workplaces-a qualitative analysis based on the socio-ecological model.

INTRODUCTION: Activity-based work (ABW) is a workplace concept that offers different work environments, letting employees choose settings that best support their specific tasks. Although research on ABW is growing, there is limited knowledge about how employees experience opportunities in these environments, particularly from a salutogenic health-promoting perspective. METHODS: A qualitative design was applied using a survey with open-ended questions, completed by 448 employees in administrative roles in one public sector organization in Sweden. A combined deductive and inductive content anal

Varieties of transgender/transsexual lives and their relationship with transphobia.

The conceptualization of gender variant populations within studies have consisted of imposed labels and a diversity of individual identities that preclude any attempt at examining the variations found among gender variant populations, while at the same time creating artificial distinctions between groups that may not actually exist. Data were collected from 90 transgender/transsexual people using confidential, self-administered questionnaires. Factors like age of transition, being out to others, and participant's race and class were associated with experiences of transphobic life events. Discr

Determinants of crypto art adoption among Chinese consumers: an extended UTAUT2 approach.

INTRODUCTION: Crypto art, enabled by blockchain-based non-fungible tokens (NFTs), represents a transformative innovation in the digital art market by conferring verifiable ownership and scarcity upon digital works. While the global crypto art market has experienced substantial growth, consumer adoption in China remains nascent and poorly understood, constrained by regulatory particularities and limited empirical investigation. METHODS: This study applies the extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2) to examine the determinants of crypto art adoption among Chinese co

Ethical Complexities of Neonatal Neurocritical Care.

As neurologic interventions have evolved for infants, so have ethical complexities in these complex clinical situations. We review 3 neonatal neurologic conditions and highlight ethical challenges that occur within and across these conditions. These 3 conditions include genetic conditions, intraventricular hemorrhage and posthemorrhagic ventricular dilation, and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Within these 3 conditions, we discuss evolving social values about cognitive disability, prognostic uncertainty, and withdrawal of life-sustaining therapies.

The socially enriched environment test: a new approach to evaluate social behavior in a mouse model of social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common anxiety disorder characterized by a marked fear of social situations. Treatments for SAD, including exposure therapy and medication, are not satisfactory for all patients. This has led to the development of several paradigms to study social fear in rodents. However, there are still some social impairments observed in SAD patients that have never been examined in rodent models. Indeed, social situations avoided by SAD patients include not only social interactions but also public performances and being observed by others. Nevertheless, tests used to asse

Interaction Effect of Social Isolation and High Dose Corticosteroid on Neurogenesis and Emotional Behavior.

Hypercortisolemia is one of the clinical features found in depressed patients. This clinical feature has been mimicked in animal studies via application of exogenous corticosterone (CORT). Previous studies suggested that CORT can induce behavioral disturbance in anxious-depressive like behavior, which is associated with suppressed neurogenesis. Hippocampal neurogenesis plays an important role in adult cognitive and behavioral regulation. Its suppression may thus lead to neuropsychiatric disorders. Similar to the effects of CORT on the animals' depression-like behaviors and neurogenesis, social

Bridging maladaptive social self-beliefs and social anxiety: a network perspective.

The Clark and Wells (1995) model of social anxiety disorder postulates that three types of maladaptive social self-beliefs (high standard, conditional, and unconditional beliefs) play a crucial role in the development of fear and avoidance of social-evaluative situations-i.e., the hallmark symptoms of social anxiety disorder. In this project, we examined associations between the three types of maladaptive social self-beliefs and fear and avoidance of social-evaluative situations in a nonclinical community sample (n = 389). We used network analysis to estimate functional relations among aspects

The Effects of Brief Social Exclusion on Pain Perception and Pain Memory in Adolescents.

PURPOSE: Peer relationship problems are associated with pain complaints; however, experimental data linking the two are lacking. The purpose of this study was to determine whether brief social exclusion influences pain processing in healthy adolescents. METHODS: A total of 40 adolescents were randomly assigned to a social exclusion or social inclusion/control condition; they then completed a cold pressor task and provided pain ratings. Two weeks later, participants provided ratings for their memory for pain during the cold pressor (nanalyzed = 33). RESULTS: Social exclusion had no immediate

Discovering Social Determinant of Health Risk Factors for Perinatal Morbidity Through Real World Data.

Gestational diabetes and preterm birth are perinatal morbidities that significantly impact women and infants' health. While clinical factors like cesarean delivery, multiple gestation, preeclampsia, and hypertensive disorder are associated with these conditions, it is increasingly recognized that social determinants of health play a crucial role. This study aims to measure the associations between the social vulnerability index (SVI) and these perinatal morbidities using multivariate logistic regression models. The results indicate that factors across all four themes in SVI are significantly a

How do mothers feel? Life with children with congenital Zika syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the repercussions, from the perspectives of caregiver mothers, of confirmed congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) in their o … t markers in the mothers' reports. Many of the families affected by CZS already lived in precarious social conditions and these conditions were exacerbated further. Robust public and social policies to support these mothers need effective implementation given that babies born with CZS need long-term care and support.

Guided and unguided self-help for social anxiety disorder: randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Internet-delivered self-help programmes with added therapist guidance have shown efficacy in social anxiety disorder, but unguided self-help has been insufficiently studied. AIMS: To evaluate the efficacy of guided and unguided self-help for social anxiety disorder. METHOD: Participants followed a cognitive-behavioural self-help programme in the form of either pure bibliotherapy or an internet-based treatment with therapist guidance and online group discussions. A subsequent trial was conducted to evaluate treatment specificity. Participants (n = 235) were randomised to one of th
