Meditation improves self-regulation over the life span.

The use of meditation to improve emotion and attention regulation has a long history in Asia and there are many practitioners in Western countries. Much of the evidence on the effectiveness of meditation is either anecdotal or a comparison of long-term meditators with controls matched in age and health. Recently, it has been possible to establish changes in self-regulation in undergraduate students after only 5 days of meditation practice, allowing randomized trials comparing effects of meditation with other self-control methods such as relaxation training. Early studies took place in Chinese

Child behaviour checklist emotional dysregulation profiles in youth with disruptive behaviour disorders: clinical correlates and treatment implications.

Two Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL) profiles were correlated to poor self-regulation, Deficient Emotional Self-Regulation (DESR) (elevation between 1 and 2 Standard Deviations (SD) in Anxiety/Depression, Aggression, Attention subscales), and Dysregulation Profile (DP) (elevation of 2 Standard Deviations or more). We explored youths with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Conduct Disorder (CD) whether these profiles are associated with specific clinical features. The sample included 57 patients with DESR profile and 41 with DP profile, ages 9 to 15 years, all assigned to a non-pharmacolog

Widowhood in the era of HIV/AIDS: a case study of Slaya District, Kenya.

Luo women are believed to acquire contagious cultural impurity after the death of their husbands that is perceived as dangerous to other people. To neutralise this impure state, a sexual cleansing rite is observed. In the indigenous setting, the ritual was observed by a brother-in-law or cousin of the deceased husband through a guardianship institution. However, with the emergence of HIV/AIDS, many educated brothers-in-law refrain from the practice and instead hire professional cleansers as substitutes. If the deceased spouses were HIV positive, the ritual places professional cleansers at risk

Distinct roles of central and peripheral vision in rapid scene understanding.

Central and peripheral vision loss, caused by conditions such as age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa, disrupt visual processing in distinct ways, yet their impact on real-world scene perception remains poorly understood. Here, we used a real-time, gaze-contingent simulation to examine how central vision loss and peripheral vision loss alter eye movements and scene understanding. Sighted participants (n = 32, five males) viewed 120 real-world scenes (50% social interaction, 50% neutral) under one- or three-saccade constraints and described each scene; description quality w

Development and evaluation of a self-management application for patients with gout.

AIM: The present study aimed to develop a self-management application for patients with gout and determine the clinical feasibility of the application. METHODS: A self-management application (GoutCare) was developed from July 1, 2016, to October 30, 2016, by reflecting on the key elements of Fisher & Fisher's information-motivation-behavioral skills model. In order to determine the clinical feasibility of the application, a non-equivalent, control group, pre-test-posttest study was conducted among patients with gout who visited a university hospital from January to April 2017. Twenty-seven su

[Analysis of population survey for determining the factors associated with the control diabetes mellitus in Mexico].

OBJECTIVE: Determine the influence of nutritional counseling, exercise, access to social healthcare and drugs, and the quality of medical care on the control of diabetics. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The information and blood samples were obtained in 2005. Glycemic control was defined as good if HbA1c was ≤7.0%, poor from 7.01%-9.50% and very poor if HbA1c >9.5%. Binary logistic regression models were used to determine the association of these factors with HbA1c>9.5%. RESULTS: Thirty percent of the patients with a medical diagnosis of diabetes had adequate metabolic control. CONCLUSIONS: Nutritio

Problematic social media use is associated with altered directed exploration under uncertainty.

BACKGROUND: Problematic social media use (PSMU) has been linked to altered decision-making, yet the specific mechanisms governing how individuals with PSMU navigate uncertainty-driven exploratory choices remain poorly understood. This study investigated whether PSMU is associated with distinct patterns of directed exploration (strategic information-seeking) and random exploration (decision noise). METHODS: 148 young adults (55 PSMU, 93 controls) completed a two-armed bandit task that independently manipulates relative and total uncertainty. A validated hybrid computational model was fitted to

Supporting sexual assault disclosure: a qualitative study of women's experiences and preferences in gynaecological and midwifery care in the Netherlands.

Background: Sexual assault (SA) can have serious consequences for physical, mental, social, and reproductive health. Worldwide, about one in three women report experiencing physical SA. Despite this high prevalence, previous research shows only a minority of healthcare providers (HCPs) consistently inquire about SA during initial consultations. Objective: This study aims to establish how gynaecologists and midwives can best address SA by exploring women's preferences with disclosing their experience of SA.Method: An explorative qualitative research design was used with a web-based questionnaire

Association of social deprivation and outdoor air pollution with pulmonary tuberculosis in spatiotemporal analysis.

The objective of this study was to identify the association between social deprivation, outdoor air pollution, and tuberculosis (TB) incidence rate or mortality rate. The study sample comprised 25 districts in Seoul, Korea. We used two public data derived from the Community Health Survey and Seoul Statistics. The geographic information system analysis and random effects Poisson regression were applied to explore the association of social deprivation and air pollution with TB incidence and mortality. An 1 ppb increase in sulfur dioxide (SO2) concentration was significantly associated with the r

Assessing the Relationship Between the Perceived Shelter Environment and Mental Health Among Homeless Caregivers.

Little attention has been given to how the environment of homeless shelters may impact the mental health of their residents. This study addresses this gap in the literature and presents a cross-sectional analysis of 209 caregivers nested within 10 family shelters across New York City. Multivariate regression was employed using hierarchical modeling to test the association between two shelter related variables (ie, the perceived social environment of the shelter and difficulty following shelter rules) and the mental health status of the caregiver residents. Less favorable perceptions of the soc

Social anxiety disorder in review: two decades of progress.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is among the most common of all psychiatric disorders. It presents with a lifetime prevalence rate of up to 16% in the general population and, like other anxiety disorders, is more frequent in women. Patients with SAD suffer from considerable psychiatric comorbidity that is often preceded by social anxiety. Social anxiety affects people early in life and provokes a great deal of impairment and cost, much being related to the under-recognition and/or under-treatment of this disorder, which occurs frequently with GPs and others specialists. There is a clear need amo

Why are you looking at me like that? Intolerance of uncertainty and emotional face processing in social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is a prevalent mental disorder characterized by altered processing of social stimuli. Intolerance of Uncertainty (IU) has been linked to social anxiety and influences the perception of social information. Yet, the neural correlates of IU in SAD during the processing of emotional stimuli remain insufficiently understood. METHODS: In this study, fMRI data were collected from 25 individuals with SAD and 25 healthy controls (HC), who completed a face processing task. Differential associations between the IU subdimensions prospective IU, inhibitory IU, and

What motivates short-form video consumption? Development and validation of a multidimensional short-form video use motivation scale.

Short-form video platforms have rapidly become a dominant mode of digital engagement, yet existing measures of user motivation have largely been adapted from broader social media or smartphone instruments rather than designed for the distinctive affordances of short-form video. The present research developed and validated the Multidimensional Short-Form Video Use Motivation Scale across two studies of frequent users (total N = 1728) aged 19-40. An initial item pool was generated through literature reviews and focus group interviews, followed by content validity evaluation. In Study 1 (n = 719)

The burden of malaria and associated factors among children aged 6-59 months in Mozambique: a nationwide cross‑sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality among children under five years of age in Mozambique despite ongoing prevention and control interventions. Understanding the sociodemographic and household factors associated with malaria is essential for designing targeted public health strategies. This study aimed to determine the burden of malaria and identify its associated factors among children aged 6-59 months in Mozambique. METHODS: This study used secondary data from the nationally representative 2022-23 Mozambique Demographic and Health Survey. A weighted sample of

Developing a rehabilitation intervention for eating and drinking difficulties following stroke through co-design stakeholder workshops.

BACKGROUND: Eating and drinking difficulties are common after stroke and have profound physical, psychological, and social consequences. Although mealtime group activities are commonly used in rehabilitation settings to support recovery, these approaches are rarely standardised, systematically developed, or evidence-informed, and there is limited research evaluating structured group-based mealtime interventions in stroke care. Co-produced, contextually grounded interventions may improve engagement and clinical relevance. This study aimed to co-design a breakfast group intervention to address e

Informational challenges of dengue surveillance and response. A case study from India.

BACKGROUND: While digital surveillance systems are being widely deployed for infectious diseases monitoring, yet their potential remains underutilized in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). Dengue, a significant global public health concern is threatening over half of the world's population and would benefit from the strengthening of supporting monitoring systems. India contributes roughly to one-third of global dengue cases, making it an important context to examine and mitigate informational barriers to digital surveillance. This paper investigates the informational challenges inherent
