Social Determinants of Emergency Department Utilization, Overuse, and Access Barriers Among Adults: A Systematic Review.

Emergency departments (EDs) are facing increasing adult demand, and socially driven patterns of repeated, avoidable, or nonurgent use remain insufficiently synthesized across healthcare settings. ED utilization is influenced not only by clinical need but also by broader social and structural conditions that shape access to healthcare. This systematic review examined the social determinants associated with ED utilization, overuse, repeated attendance, and access barriers among adults. A structured search of major biomedical and health services databases was conducted, and eligible studies were

A One Health Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (OH GESI) Framework to strengthen equity goals of One Health implementation tools.

There is a persistent lack of gender and social inclusion in widely used One Health assessment, planning and implementation tools, underscoring the gap between high-level One Health policy commitments to equality and inclusion and real-world practice. Most One Health tools, including those produced by international agencies with high-level commitments, do not adequately address gender equality or social equity. To tackle this issue, the authors developed the One Health Gender Equality and Social Inclusion assessment framework (OH-GESI), which evaluates how tools support gender equality, empowe

Caring over computing: an ethical and sociotechnical perspective on digital technologies for social connectedness in dementia care.

People with dementia in residential care often experience reduced social connectedness. Person-centered care approaches foreground meaningful social interactions to support well-being, but staff and time pressures increasingly constrain opportunities for such care. Digital technologies offer possibilities to help care professionals facilitate social connectedness, despite increasing care pressures. Yet, the meaningful integration of such technologies into the complex sociotechnical setting of residential dementia care is not straightforward. To responsibly design and position digital technolog

Interview skills training for people with psychiatric disabilities: a review of the literature.

Vocational rehabilitation or integration is a growing concern for people with psychiatric disabilities and mental health professionals. One of the key steps towards successful vocational outcome is to be competent in job interview skills, to form a favourable impression on job interviewers and to ultimately lead to a positive hiring decision. People with psychiatric disabilities have difficulties in managing job interviews effectively due to various reasons. This paper reviews seven studies on the effectiveness of job interview skills training for the sample of people with psychiatric disabili

Assessing Unmet Social Needs in Multiple Sclerosis Care in Australia: A Qualitative Assessment of Feasibility, Barriers and Enablers.

BACKGROUND: Unmet social needs (including housing, transport and social inclusion) contribute substantially to health outcomes, especially for people with long-term health conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS). Whether assessment of unmet social needs occurs in MS clinical care is unclear. This study aims to (1) understand current practices, (2) identify barriers and enablers to social needs assessments in MS care, and (3) explore the feasibility of social needs screening tools. METHODS: This qualitative descriptive study comprised focus groups and interviews with clinicians, carers and

Emotional and social loneliness in the longitudinal association between alexithymia and depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Alexithymia has been linked to depressive symptoms, yet the mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear. We examined whether emotional loneliness (perceived lack of close, intimate bonds) and social loneliness (perceived deficits in broader social integration) represent distinct pathways linking alexithymia to depressive symptoms. METHODS: In a longitudinal study of 2628 adults aged 18-40 years, we examined whether emotional and social loneliness mediate the association between alexithymia and depressive symptoms. Participants were assessed over 10 months (T0-T2). A para…

Unique Amygdala Signatures and Shared Prefrontal Deficits in Autism: Mapping Social Heterogeneity via Naturalistic functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

BACKGROUND: Naturalistic fMRI provides an ecologically valid window into social brain function, yet binary diagnostic labels may obscure neural signatures linked to the continuous spectrum of social deficits. We investigated whether social brain alterations in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) follow a categorical, dimensional, or "dual-track" architecture. METHODS: We analyzed fMRI data from 428 youth (262 ASD, 166 typically developing; ages 5-22) watching two films: The Present and Despicable Me. Extensive characterization of a Williams syndrome murine model shows Gtf2ird1-mediated rescue of select sensorimotor tasks, but no effect on enhanced social behavior.

Williams syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder exhibiting cognitive and behavioral abnormalities, including increased social motivation, risk of anxiety and specific phobias along with perturbed motor function. Williams syndrome is caused by a microdeletion of 26-28 genes on chromosome 7, including GTF2IRD1, which encodes a transcription factor suggested to play a role in the behavioral profile of Williams syndrome. Duplications of the full region also lead to frequent autism diagnosis, social phobias and language delay. Thus, genes in the region appear to regulate social motivation i

A Hierarchical-Dynamic integration model for the formation of interpersonal neural synchrony during spoken communication.

Interpersonal neural synchrony (INS) is widely observed during spoken communication, yet the cognitive and neural processes through which it emerges remain incompletely understood. This review synthesizes evidence on the functional significance, representational organization, and neural implementation of INS and proposes a Hierarchical-Dynamic Integration Model (HDIM) of its formation. HDIM conceptualizes INS as the cross-brain manifestation of ongoing coordination between two interdependent processes: multilevel linguistic alignment and contextual-intentional integration. The hierarchical org

Development and Integration of the Ear.

The perception of our environment via sensory organs plays a crucial role in survival and evolution. Hearing, one of our most developed senses, depends on the proper function of the auditory system and plays a key role in social communication, integration, and learning ability. The ear is a composite structure, comprised of the external, middle, and inner ear. During development, the ear is formed from the integration of a number of tissues of different embryonic origin, which initiate in distinct areas of the embryo at different time points. Functional connections between the components of th

Family support as social exchange in entrepreneurship: Its moderating impact on entrepreneurial stressors-well-being relationships.

Current studies suggest mixed effects concerning the impact of the family system on entrepreneurial outcomes. Through the integration of the family embeddedness theory and social exchange theory, we further investigate the potential benefits and costs of family support as a social exchange process between entrepreneurs and their family members. We propose that perceived family support can differentially shape well-being across different entrepreneurial contexts (financial and workload stressors) depending on the nature of the exchange relationship (economic vs. social), thereby dual effects ar
