Factor structure of the Persian version of general, social, and negative self-consciousness of appearance domains of Derriford Appearance Scale 59: an application in the field of burn injuries.

BACKGROUND: The Derriford Appearance Scale 59 (DAS59) is a widely used measure of the spectrum of psychological distress and dysfunction that is characteristic of disfigurement. Also, disfigurement due to burn injury leads to feeling guilty or less socially competent, avoiding social situations, suicide, poor self-esteem, sexual difficulties, and depression. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to translate and culturally adapt three subscales of DAS59 into Persian language and to investigate its factor structure for Iranian burned patients. METHOD: Translation-back translation of the sca

The development of the Metacognitions About Boredom Scale (MABS) and its role in problematic social media use.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Boredom is a universal affective-cognitive state arising from unmet needs for meaningful engagement. Although unpleasant, boredom can inspire creativity and purposeful action or trigger maladaptive behaviors such as problematic social media use (PSMU). The present study developed and validated the Metacognitions About Boredom Scale (MABS), a new instrument designed to assess positive and negative metacognitions about boredom. METHODS: The research comprised two studies. Study 1 involved mixed-methods item generation and large-scale validation among Iranian adults (N = 1,0

Validation of the DSM-5 internet gaming disorder framework for clinical diagnosis of problematic social media usage.

AIMS: Problematic social media usage (PUSM) has become a growing public health issue, with adolescents being particularly vulnerable. The absence of a standardized diagnostic tool has hindered consistent clinical identification and research advancement. To address this gap, the present study systematically evaluated the applicability of the DSM-5 Internet gaming disorder (IGD) criteria for diagnosing PUSM. METHODS: A total of 405 participants were recruited and divided into five groups: PUSM, gaming disorder (GD), regular social media users (RSMU), regular gamers (RG), and healthy controls (H

Assessing treatment integrity in cognitive-behavioral therapy: comparing session segments with entire sessions.

The evaluation of treatment integrity (therapist adherence and competence) is a necessary condition to ensure the internal and external validity of psychotherapy research. However, the evaluation process is associated with high costs, because therapy sessions must be rated by experienced clinicians. It is debatable whether rating session segments is an adequate alternative to rating entire sessions. Four judges evaluated treatment integrity (i.e., therapist adherence and competence) in 84 randomly selected videotapes of cognitive-behavioral therapy for major depressive disorder, social anxiety

Testing for drug use, Part 1: Analytical methods.

Issues surrounding the screening and testing of individuals for drug use, including analytical and legal aspects of the procedures and social, political, and ethical problems and concerns, are reviewed. Historically, professional and societal debate regarding drug taking, drug-use problems, and the utility of drug testing programs occurs in cycles. Analytical methods commonly used to test for drug use include breath analysis for alcohol and urine drug assays. Blood alcohol concentrations are determined by laboratory assay methods or by portable devices used in the field. While poor laboratory

Development and validation of the Shy Bladder and Bowel Scale (SBBS).

Currently research exploring paruresis and parcopresis, anxiety relating to urinating and having bowel motions in public respectively is limited. While there are several validated measures of paruresis, no valid measure assessing parcopresis is currently available. The present study investigates the development and validation of the Shy Bladder and Bowel Scale (SBBS) which assesses both paruresis and parcopresis. Two participant groups were utilised to validate this scale, a student psychology cohort (n = 387) and a public cohort (n = 334). An eight-item two-factor model was identified in the

Clinical validation of a non-heteronormative version of the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS).

INTRODUCTION: Despite welcomed changes in societal attitudes and practices towards sexual minorities, instances of heteronormativity can still be found within healthcare and research. The Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) is a valid and reliable self-rating scale of social anxiety, which includes one item (number 14) with an explicit heteronormative assumption about the respondent's sexual orientation. This heteronormative phrasing may confuse, insult or alienate sexual minority respondents. A clinically validated version of the SIAS featuring a non-heteronormative phrasing of item 14 is

Understanding depression through animal models: experimental and behavioral perspectives.

Depression is a multifactorial, chronic, and recurrent psychiatric disorder that represents a major global health burden. Despite extensive research, its underlying neurobiological mechanisms remain incompletely understood, largely due to ethical and methodological limitations in human studies. Consequently, rodent models have become indispensable tools for investigating the neurobiology of depression and evaluating potential antidepressant therapies. This narrative review provides a comprehensive and updated overview of the principal experimental models of depression in mice and rats, includi

Validation of an assessment of prolonged grief disorder among Mexican mourners.

OBJECTIVES: Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) is a debilitating condition recently recognized to psychiatric diagnostic manuals. There is a pressing need for valid, reliable, and culturally adapted instruments that align with internationally established diagnostic criteria for the diagnosis of pathological grief, particularly for Latinx populations, who often face limited access to timely mental health services. This study aimed to translate, adapt, and validate the Mexican version of the PG-13-R scale. METHODS: We translated and then back-translated the original PG-13-R. The scale was reviewed

Development and validation of the Lebanese Orthorexia Nervosa Inventory (LONI).

BACKGROUND: Unlike eating disorders (ED) that are officially recognized and focusing on the quantity of food, Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) revolves around an unhealthy fixation on the quality of food eaten. Existing ON scales differ in how these conceptualize and define ON, ensuing inconsistency in assessments that not only affects the validity and reliability of ON related research, but also impacts the ability of healthcare professionals to identify and provide support for individuals struggling with ON. OBJECTIVE: Create the first Eastern locally validated tool that considers the cultural nuanc

Assessment of assertion.

Behavioral assessment of assertion is an evolving technology. Although there have been many recent advances in the assessment of assertion, many unresolved issues continue to plague researcher and clinician alike. At a conceptual level, a precise theoretical rationale of assertion has yet to be articulated and accepted. Comprehensive identification of the various parameters that influence assertive responding have not been adequately evaluated, although person and situational variables are widely accepted parameters. Although a plethora of assessment instruments and strategies have emerged, mo

Inclusion That Excludes: Rethinking the Ecological Model for Mental Disability Through Defensive Dynamics, Institutional Power, and Capital Asymmetries.

This article offers a critical reworking of ecological and social-ecological models as applied to intellectual and developmental disabilities, autism, and severe mental illness. Drawing on a qualitative synthesis of 18 studies, we show that ecological frameworks are predominantly used as descriptive mapping devices, that power and inequalities enter analyses in partial and fragmented ways, and that intersystemic connections often generate formally inclusive yet experientially exclusionary arrangements. To address these limitations, we propose an Integrated Ecological Model for Mental Disabilit
