Contribution of trochanteric soft tissues to fall force estimates, the factor of risk, and prediction of hip fracture risk.

UNLABELLED: We compared trochanteric soft tissue thickness, femoral aBMD, and the ratio of fall force to femoral strength (i.e., factor of risk) in 21 postmenopausal women with incident hip fracture and 42 age-matched controls. Reduced trochanteric soft tissue thickness, low femoral aBMD, and increased ratio of fall force to femoral strength (i.e., factor of risk) were associated with increased risk of hip fracture. INTRODUCTION: The contribution of trochanteric soft tissue thickness to hip fracture risk is incompletely understood. A biomechanical approach to assessing hip fracture risk that

Simulation of Multiple Source Vocalization in the Larynx: How True Folds, False Folds, and Aryepiglottic Folds May Interact.

PURPOSE: This study was a modest beginning to determine dominance and entrainment between three soft tissues in the larynx that can be set into flow-induced oscillation and act as sound sources. The hypothesis was that they interact as coupled oscillators with observable bifurcations as energy is exchanged between them. METHODOLOGY: The true vocal folds, the ventricular (false) folds, and the aryepiglottic folds were part of a soft-walled airway that produced airflow for sound production. The methodology was computational, based on a simplified Navier-Stokes solution of convective and compres

Computed tomographic and radiographic morphology of the pastern and coffin joints of One-Humped Camel (Camelus dromedarius).

The objective of the current study was to describe the structures of the pastern and coffin joints in dromedary camel using x-ray, bone and soft tissue windows computed tomography (CT) and three-dimensional volume rendering (3DVR) of CT imaging. 3DVR of CT was obtained at the slight flexed dorsal view, plantar view, dorsolateral view and lateral view which explained all the surfaces and structures of the digit bony parts even the parts of the articular surface. The processed images of 3DVR of CT showed different patterns of the cortical, cancellous, subchondral bones and medullary cavity of th

Imaging of pediatric foot disorders.

Infants and children undergo imaging studies to evaluate a wide variety of congenital and acquired disorders. Imaging protocols have to consider the patient's comfort, level of anxiety, and smaller size. The first imaging study is usually made with plain radiographs. The routine radiographic examination of the foot includes the anteroposterior (AP), lateral, and oblique projections. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (RMI) provides excellent anatomic detail of cartilage, vasculature and soft tissue thanks to superior soft tissue contrast and spatial resolution, so is valuable in many cases. According

Application of a Double- and Triple-Stacked Hexapod (Taylor Spatial Frame) for High-Energy Segmental Tibial Fractures.

Segmental open tibia fractures from high-energy trauma present significant challenges in achieving stability, alignment, as well as soft tissue preservation. Conventional internal fixation methods often pose risks of infection, non-union, and soft tissue compromise. The Taylor Spatial Frame (TSF), a hexapod-based external fixator, offers multi-planar correction and gradual deformity control, which can prove instrumental in complex segmental fractures. This technical note details the application of double- or triple-stacked TSFs to treat multi-level tibial fractures, ensuring independent correc

Imaging findings of primary epithelioid sarcoma of adrenal gland: a case report and literature review.

Epithelioid sarcoma (ES) is a rare soft tissue malignant tumor with an uncertain histogenetic origin. It usually arises in soft tissues of the extremities, while ES in adrenal gland is extremely rare. There is no special clinical manifestation in the early stage, so it may be misdiagnosed and delay the treatment. We reported a 69-year-old male with an adrenal ES. The tumor was completely resected, and two months later, positron emission tomography-computed tomography(PET/CT) noted recurrence at the tumor bed and multiple metastases. The patient has been treated with chemotherapy with good effe

PET-CT in the Evaluation of Neoadjuvant/Adjuvant Treatment Response of Soft-tissue Sarcomas: A Comprehensive Review of the Literature.

➢: In soft-tissue sarcomas (STSs), the use of positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) through a standardized uptake value reduction rate correlates well with histopathological response to neoadjuvant treatment and survival. ➢: PET-CT has shown a better sensitivity to diagnose systemic involvement compared with magnetic resonance imaging and CT; therefore, it has an important role in detecting recurrent systemic disease. However, delaying the use of PET-CT scan, to differentiate tumor recurrence from benign fluorodeoxyglucose uptake changes after surgical treatment and radiot

Osteotomies in Patello-Femoral Instabilities.

Patellar instability is defined by clinical and radiologic criteria. The surgical treatment is aimed at restoring the congruence of the patellofemoral articulation and correcting extensor mechanism malalignment, to prevent recurrence of dislocation. The standard soft-tissue procedures are lateral release and vastus medialis advancement and medial patello femoral ligament plasty. Bony procedures are frequently performed in addition to soft-tissue surgery, to realign the extensor mechanism by means of tibial tubercle medialization, or to correct the patellar index in patella alta. In a smaller n

Alveolar soft part sarcoma of the forearm.

Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare form of soft-tissue sarcoma arising from connective tissue. It is most often seen in adolescents and young adults and has high propensity for recurrence and metastasis. Clinically, it mimics haemangioma or arteriovenous malformations. In our case report, an 18-year-old female presented with markedly vascular tumour in the left forearm, for which excision biopsy was done. Histopathological report revealed ASPS. The patient was screened for metastasis. Ultrasound abdomen, computed tomography (CT) chest, CT brain and whole-body skeletal survey was done.

Klestadt Cyst: Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

The Klestadt cyst, also known as nasoalveolar cyst, is an uncommon nonodontogenic tumor located in the maxillofacial soft tissue, on the region corresponding to the nasolabial furrow. Following its first description by Zuckerkandl in 1882, <300 patients have been reported in the literature. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the preferred modality for diagnosis and management of Klestadt cyst. Magnetic resonance imaging is superior to computed tomography in demonstration of the relationship with surrounding soft tissues and bones, and also showing the accurate localization of the lesion. The

Solitary synovial chondromatosis arising in the gluteus maximus bursa: computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings.

Chondral tumors in soft tissue are referred to as soft-tissue chondromas or extraskeletal chondromas, or as synovial chondromatosis if they arise in synovial tissue. We report the case of a 29-year-old man with synovial chondromatosis, also called synovial osteochondromatosis, which appeared in a solitary and extra-articular form. On magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography, the central portion of the tumor showed similar characteristics to bone marrow, despite the absence of any connection to adjacent bone. T2-weighted imaging displayed marked peripheral hyperintensity consist

Imaging in Foot and Ankle Arthritis.

The foot and ankle are commonly involved in a range of arthritides that affect the joints, bones, and soft tissues. Accurate plain film interpretation can often aid the diagnosis and monitor disease progression and treatment response. Ultrasound and MRI afford superior depiction of the soft tissues, and advances over recent years have centered on early detection of synovitis, enabling earlier diagnosis and treatment. Advantages and disadvantages of the imaging techniques of radiography, multidetector computed tomography, ultrasound, and MRI are discussed, as is optimization of these modalities

Squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil masquerading as a peritonsillar abscess.

A 58-year-old man presented to the emergency department with a persistent left-sided sore throat of 2-month duration. The sore throat had not responded to antibiotic therapy. Over the past week, the soreness had increased and was aggravated by opening the mouth. He denied fever but admitted to a 10-lb weight loss. His social history was significant for alcohol and tobacco use. Physical examination revealed a bulging and erythematous left soft palate with a deviated uvula. Areas of the tonsil were noted to be ulcerating through the soft palate. In the upper left neck, a 3-cm, firm, nontender, l

Erdheim-Chester disease: an uncommon cause of upper urinary tract obstruction.

Erdheim-Chester disease is a rare non-Langerhans form of systemic histiocytosis of unknown origin. We describe a 45-year-old man presenting with bilateral hydronephrosis suggestive of extrinsic urinary tract obstruction. Computed tomography revealed extensive hypodense soft tissue infiltration in the retroperitoneum surrounding the kidneys. Needle biopsy of the retroperitoneal soft tissue revealed aggregates of lipid-laden histiocytes expressing CD68 but negative for CD1a and S100 protein. The diagnosis of Erdheim-Chester disease was supported by typical radionuclide bone scinitigraphic findin

Virtual autopsy in hanging.

The aim of the study was to compare postmortem computed tomographic (CT) imaging findings from a case of hanging with the autopsy findings. The CT showed a good match with autopsy findings especially for bone, soft tissue, and spinal injuries. The CT images of the injuries of the neck obtained by CT scan clearly showed the ligature mark, the hemorrhagic suffusion in the soft tissue (thickening of derma) and in the muscles (sternocleidomastoid) of the neck. Furthermore, CT 3-dimensional reconstruction showed brain edema, fracture of the left posterior horn of the hyoid bone, and a grade 1 retro

Unusual presentation of peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the maxilla.

The peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (pPNET) is a rare and highly malignant soft tissue neoplasm in children and young adults. Fewer than 10 reported cases of pPNET of maxilla are available in the English literature. A 28-year-old woman was presented with the pPNET of the maxilla and metastasis. Two years after diagnosis, she experienced diplopia, and then magnetic resonance imaging was done, which showed a mass in the optic chiasma and parasellar region. The typical appearance resembled large noncalcified soft tissue masses in the magnetic resonance image and computed tomographic sc

Inflammatory pseudotumor (plasma cell granuloma) of the temporal bone.

We report the case of a 41-year-old man who presented with progressive right-sided ear pressure, otalgia, hearing loss, tinnitus, and intermittent otorrhea. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging detected a soft-tissue mass in the right mastoid with intracranial invasion and erosion through the tegmen tympani and mastoid cortex. Histopathologic examination was consistent with an inflammatory pseudotumor (plasma cell granuloma). These lesions rarely occur in the temporal bone. When they do, they are locally destructive and can erode bone and soft tissues. Aggressive surgery is recom
