BACKGROUND: Determining the somatosensory and psychosocial profile of patients with painful temporomandibular joint (TMJ) clicking can help to understand the pain mechanisms in cases of TMJ clicking.
OBJECTIVE: To characterise the somatosensory and psychosocial profile of patients with painful TMJ clicking when compared to patients with painless TMJ clicking and healthy control group.
METHODS: Somatosensory and psychosocial functions were assessed in 90 individuals: patients with painful TMJ clicking (n = 30); patients with painless TMJ clicking (n = 30); and healthy controls (n = 30). Somat

BACKGROUND: In this executive summary, the authors describe a protocol for assessing patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD). It is based on the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) for clinical and research applications.
METHODS: The DC/TMD was developed using published Axis I physical diagnoses for the most common TMDs. Axis I diagnostic criteria were derived from pertinent clinical TMD signs and symptoms. Axis II consists of psychosocial and behavioral questionnaires already in the public domain. A panel of experts vetted and modified the Axis I and Axis II d

In this paper, we discussed the relationship between somatization and functional somatic syndrome (FSS). The concept of somatization takes its origin from the work of Freud S who proposed the idea of conversion as a main defense mechanism. At the same period, the term somatization was introduced by Stekel W as a hypothetical process whereby a deep-seated conflict could cause a bodily disorder. After that, Alexander F developed the emotional equivalents, which had been also proposed by Freud S, into the concept of the vegetative neurosis and psychosomatic diseases. Recently, somatization tends

This case is discussed in the contexts of affect theory, attachment theory, and dissociative experience. Dissociative adaptations to living that become entrenched resistances during psychotherapeutic inquiry give way to a scrupulous attention to the characteristics of dissociative experiencing. Somatosensory free association and appreciation of experiential aspects of depersonalization, derealization, and dissociative amnesia open new areas of negotiation between patient and therapist. Paradigms from infant attachment and adult attachment research parsimoniously explicate psychodynamic formula

This study presents the cases of anorexia nervosa which began with a body dysmorphic disorder lasting for at least 6 months. In some subjects (25%) there was comorbidity of 3 mental disorders: anancastic personality or obsessive-compulsive disorder + dysmorphophobia + anorexia nervosa or dysmorphophobia + anorexia nervosa + depressive disorder (dysthymia or major depression). The author considers the conception that in some cases dysmorphophobia and anorexia nervosa are a spectre of obsessive-compulsive disorder or affective disorders in adolescents.

BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE: Studies in younger patients with panic disorder suggest greater somatization compared to similarly aged normal controls. Thus, we compared the degree of somatization in young versus older female patients with panic disorder to ascertain whether similarly high levels of somatization exist in older panic disorder patients.
METHOD: Community-dwelling subjects were recruited for clinical trials for panic disorder and met Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III-R) criteria for panic disorder as a primary diagnosis. Our sample (N = 64) contained 42 y

BACKGROUND: Vertigo and dizziness are among the most prevalent symptoms in neurologic disorders. Although many of these patients suffer from postural instability and gait disturbances, there is only limited data on their risk of falling.
METHODS: We conducted a controlled cross-sectional study at the tertiary care outpatient clinic of the German Center for Vertigo and Balance Disorders using a self-administered questionnaire to assess falls, fall-related injuries, and fear of falling. The recruitment period was 6 months.
RESULTS: A total of 569 patients (mean age 59.6 ± 17.1 years, 55% femal

Suicide in children and young adults is a leading cause of premature mortality, and there is a need to develop a more profound understanding … s, and the most frequent of the mental and behavioural diagnoses were neurotic, stress-related, and somatoform disorders (32%) and mood (affective) disorders (29%). The diagnoses and symptoms were not sufficient to uncover suicidality in children and young adults. The clinical implications for alternative assessments and preventive interventions are discussed.

Community-based studies that measure both psychiatric diagnoses and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) are lacking. This study reports current psychiatric disorders in community-dwelling adults at high risk for OSA identified by the Berlin Questionnaire. Furthermore, associations between OSA and current psychiatric disorders, unadjusted and adjusted for putative confounders, are reported. A subsample of the Akershus Sleep Apnoea Project consisting of 290 adults, aged 30-65 yrs, with positive Berlin Questionnaire screening underwent the Structured Clinical Interview for the Diagnostic and Statistic

Anxiety, mood and somatoform disorders are among the most prevalent forms of psychological suffering during childhood and adolescence. If untreated, these problems can be predictors of more severe disorders in adulthood. New trends in clinical psychology suggest the relevance of focusing on child's competencies and developing optimal functioning in youth. A specific psychotherapeutic strategy for enhancing well-being (Well-Being Therapy; WBT) has been developed for adult patients and it was found to be effective in determining remission from affective symptoms, in improving psychological well-…
