Validation of amyloid PET positivity thresholds in centiloids: a multisite PET study approach.

BACKGROUND: Inconsistent positivity thresholds, image analysis pipelines, and quantitative outcomes are key challenges of multisite studies using more than one β-amyloid (Aβ) radiotracer in positron emission tomography (PET). Variability related to these factors contributes to disagreement and lack of replicability in research and clinical trials. To address these problems and promote Aβ PET harmonization, we used [18F]florbetaben (FBB) and [18F]florbetapir (FBP) data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) to derive (1) standardized Centiloid (CL) transformations and (2) i

Scabies: more than just an irritation.

Human scabies, caused by skin infestation with the arthropod mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, typically results in a papular, intensely pruritic eruption involving the interdigital spaces, and flexure creases. Recent research has led to a reassessment of the morbidity attributable to this parasite in endemic communities, particularly resulting from secondary skin sepsis and postinfective complications including glomerulonephritis. This has led to studies of the benefits of community based control programmes, and to concerns regarding the emergence of drug resistance when such strategies are employed.

Cross-Domain Robust Pruning for Polyp Segmentation: Multi-Encoder Feature Fusion Beats Single-Encoder Baselines.

Medical image segmentation requires dense pixel-level annotations, making large-scale dataset construction expensive and motivating research into data-efficient training. The main objective of this paper is to determine whether fusing two complementary pretrained image encoders into a single similarity space can make training-free dataset pruning robust across heterogeneous polyp segmentation domains and to quantify that robustness against a comprehensive panel of baselines. To achieve this, we propose Multi-Encoder Diverse Pruning (MEDP), a training-free dataset-pruning method. MEDP fuses fea

Choroid and Retinal Pigmented Epithelium in Pigs: A Comprehensive Light and Ultrastructural Study.

This study was conducted on 12 adult pigs of a local mixed breed to examine the histology, histochemistry and ultrastructure of the choroid and retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE). The tissues were fixed in Davidson's Fluid for light microscopy and Karnovsky's fluid for electron microscopy. Due to the physiological, anatomical and metabolic similarities between pigs and humans, pigs are a suitable animal model for various ophthalmic studies. Bruch's membrane exhibited five distinct layers: the basement membrane of the RPE, the inner collagenous layer, the elastic lamina, the outer collagenous l

Differing Time Courses of Reward-Related Attentional Processing: An EEG Source-Space Analysis.

Since our environment typically contains more information than can be processed at any one time due to the limited capacity of our visual system, we are bound to differentiate between relevant and irrelevant information. This process, termed attentional selection, is usually categorized into bottom-up and top-down processes. However, recent research suggests reward might also be an important factor in guiding attention. Monetary reward can bias attentional selection in favor of task-relevant targets and reduce the efficiency of visual search when a reward-associated, but task-irrelevant distra

Enhanced Release of Glucose Into the Intraluminal Space of the Intestine Associated With Metformin Treatment as Revealed by [18F]Fluorodeoxyglucose PET-MRI.

OBJECTIVE: Positron emission tomography (PET)-computed tomography has revealed that metformin promotes the intestinal accumulation of [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG), a nonmetabolizable glucose derivative. It has remained unknown, however, whether this accumulation occurs in the wall or intraluminal space of the intestine. We here addressed this question with the use of [18F]FDG PET-MRI, a recently developed imaging method with increased accuracy of registration and high soft-tissue contrast. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Among 244 individuals with type 2 diabetes who underwent PET-MRI, we extra

Explaining the relationship between three eye diseases and depressive symptoms in older adults.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to examine whether patients with age-related eye diseases, like age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, or Fuchs corneal dystrophy, are more likely to show signs of depression compared to a control group of older adults with good vision, and to determine whether reduced mobility mediates these relationships. METHODS: We recruited 315 eligible patients (81 with AMD, 55 with Fuchs, 91 with glaucoma, and 88 controls) from the ophthalmology clinics of a Montreal hospital from September 2009 until December 2011. Depressive symptoms were assessed usin

Magnetic resonance imaging manifestations of cerebral small vessel disease: automated quantification and clinical application.

The common cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) neuroimaging features visible on conventional structural magnetic resonance imaging include recent small subcortical infarcts, lacunes, white matter hyperintensities, perivascular spaces, microbleeds, and brain atrophy. The CSVD neuroimaging features have shared and distinct clinical consequences, and the automatic quantification methods for these features are increasingly used in research and clinical settings. This review article explores the recent progress in CSVD neuroimaging feature quantification and provides an overview of the clinical co

Research on LSTM-based spatial target trajectory forecasting enhanced by attention mechanisms.

To address the strong dependence of space object orbit prediction on physical models and initial conditions, as well as the difficulty of completely eliminating prediction errors, this study proposes a satellite orbit prediction correction method that integrates an attention mechanism with a long short-term memory (LSTM) network. Taking the LAGEOS satellite as the research object, the proposed method uses position error, velocity, and acceleration features extracted from historical orbital data to train a deep learning model for predicting one-day-ahead orbital errors and correcting the SGP4 o

Exploring semantic grounding in the posterior parietal cortex.

This study examines the evolving perspective on semantic processing, which has shifted from the traditional view of an isolated semantic memory system to one that recognizes the involvement of dynamic, distributed neural networks. Recent evidence supports the hypothesis that semantic processing engages both modality-specific and multimodal regions, with the latter serving as integrative "semantic hubs." In this context, our research focuses on the posterior parietal cortices (PPC) and their role in processing space-related semantics. We utilized a low-frequency repetitive Transcranial Magnetic

MARR: A Multi-Agent Reinforcement Resetter for Redirected Walking.

The reset technique of Redirected Walking (RDW) forcibly reorients the user's direction overtly to avoid collisions with boundaries, obstacles, or other users in the physical space. However, excessive resetting can decrease the user's sense of immersion and presence. Several RDW studies have been conducted to address this issue. Among them, much research has been done on reset techniques that reduce the number of resets by devising reset direction rules or optimizing them for a given environment. However, existing optimization studies on reset techniques have mainly focused on a single-user en

The Space-Time Organisation of Sleep Slow Oscillations as Potential Biomarker for Hypersomnolence.

Research suggests that the spatial profile of slow wave activity (SWA) could be altered in hypersomnolence. Slow oscillations (SOs; 0.5-1.5 Hz), single waveform events contributing to SWA, can be labelled as Global, Frontal, or Local depending on their presentation on the scalp. We showed that SO space-time types differentiate in their amplitudes, coordination with sleep spindles, and propagation patterns. This study applies our data-driven analysis to the nocturnal sleep of adults with and without hypersomnolence and major depressive disorder (MDD) to explore the potential relevance of SO spa

Biopsychosocial Health Considerations for Astronauts in Long-Duration Spaceflight: A Narrative Review.

Long-duration spaceflights beyond low-Earth orbit, including missions to the Moon and Mars, pose significant health risks. Although biomedical approaches commonly appear in the literature, considering psychological and social factors alongside physiologic health offers a more holistic approach to astronaut care. Integrating the biopsychosocial (BPS) framework into medical planning addresses complex spaceflight challenges and aids in developing mitigation strategies. This review examined health risks associated with long-duration spaceflight within a BPS framework. Sources included governmental

Neural evidence of switch processes during semantic and phonetic foraging in human memory.

Humans may retrieve words from memory by exploring and exploiting in "semantic space" similar to how nonhuman animals forage for resources in physical space. This has been studied using the verbal fluency test (VFT), in which participants generate words belonging to a semantic or phonetic category in a limited time. People produce bursts of related items during VFT, referred to as "clustering" and "switching." The strategic foraging model posits that cognitive search behavior is guided by a monitoring process which detects relevant declines in performance and then triggers the searcher to seek

Looseness Monitoring of Bolted Spherical Joint Connection Using Electro-Mechanical Impedance Technique and BP Neural Networks.

The bolted spherical joint (BSJ) has wide applications in various space grid structures. The bar and the bolted sphere are connected by the high-strength bolt inside the joint. High-strength bolt is invisible outside the joint, which causes the difficulty in monitoring the bolt looseness. Moreover, the bolt looseness leads to the reduction of the local stiffness and bearing capacity for the structure. In this regard, this study used the electro-mechanical impedance (EMI) technique and back propagation neural networks (BPNNs) to monitor the bolt looseness inside the BSJ. Therefore, a space grid

The Promise and Peril of Alzheimer Disease Prevention.

Interventions to delay or prevent Alzheimer disease dementia hold the promise of sizable personal and public benefit. The nomenclature, research designs, and interpretation of results for studies assessing prevention outcomes, however, are inconsistent and would benefit from greater consensus about the necessary requirements for specific intervention claims. Moreover, the public space includes substantial media attention, direct-to-consumer diagnostics, and marketing of unproven interventions for brain health and dementia prevention. This article outlines these issues in hopes of catalyzing fu
