Evaluation of near-infrared spectroscopy as a contactless method for health monitoring of resin-based coating materials applied to concrete surfaces.

The surfaces of concrete structures are often coated with protective materials to minimize corrosion and weathering-based deterioration. Therefore, it is important to monitor the aging of the coating materials and their overall condition to extend the service lifetime of the structure effectively. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a contactless, nondestructive, rapid, and convenient method for material characterization; therefore, it is useful for onsite inspection of coating materials. Hence, in this study, we attempt to determine whether NIRS can be used for simple inspection for health m

Identification of vulnerable plaques and patients by intracoronary near-infrared spectroscopy and ultrasound (PROSPECT II): a prospective natural history study.

BACKGROUND: Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and intravascular ultrasound are promising imaging modalities to identify non-obstructive plaques likely to cause coronary-related events. We aimed to assess whether combined NIRS and intravascular ultrasound can identify high-risk plaques and patients that are at risk for future major adverse cardiac events (MACEs). METHODS: PROSPECT II is an investigator-sponsored, multicentre, prospective natural history study done at 14 university hospitals and two community hospitals in Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. We recruited patients of any age with recent

Assessment of Cerebral Blood Oxygenation by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy before and after Resuscitation in a Rat Asphyxia Cardiac Arrest Model.

Clinical investigators have focused on the real-time evaluation of cerebral blood oxygenation (CBO) by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). A previous study showed that an abrupt increase of oxy-hemoglobin (Hb) level and tissue oxygenation index (TOI) was associated with the timing of return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). However, it is not clear how TOI alters before and after CPR including a period of cardiac arrest (CA). Therefore, this study aimed to assess CBO with asphyxia CA and its association with CPR to ROSC in rats. Male Sprague-Dawley ra

Solvent effect on the competition between weak and strong interactions in phenol solutions studied by near-infrared spectroscopy and DFT calculations.

Near-infrared (NIR) spectra of phenol in a series of non-aromatic and aromatic solvents were recorded to study the competition between various types of solute-solute and solute-solvent interactions. Depending on the phenol concentration, the free OH and OH involved in the OH⋯OH interactions in the dimers and higher associates are present in cyclohexane solutions. On the other hand, free OH does not appear in Cl-containing solvents since at a low phenol content the OH groups participate in the OH⋯Cl interactions. In CCl4 and tetrachloroethylene this interaction is weak, while in chlorobenzene t

Using a multimodal near-infrared spectroscopy and MRI to quantify gray matter metabolic rate for oxygen: A hypothermia validation study.

Non-invasive quantitative imaging of cerebral oxygen metabolism (CMRO2) in small animal models is crucial to understand the role of oxidative metabolism in healthy and diseased brains. In this study, we developed a multimodal method combining near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and MRI to non-invasively study oxygen delivery and consumption in the cortex of mouse and rat models. The term CASNIRS is proposed to the technique that measures CMRO2 with ASL and NIRS. To determine the reliability of this method, CMRO2 values were compared with reported values measured with other techniques. Also, the

Development of a non-destructive method for determining protein nitrogen in a yellow fever vaccine by near infrared spectroscopy and multivariate calibration.

Near infrared spectroscopy (NIR) with diffuse reflectance associated to multivariate calibration has as main advantage the replacement of the physical separation of interferents by the mathematical separation of their signals, rapidly with no need for reagent consumption, chemical waste production or sample manipulation. Seeking to optimize quality control analyses, this spectroscopic analytical method was shown to be a viable alternative to the classical Kjeldahl method for the determination of protein nitrogen in yellow fever vaccine. The most suitable multivariate calibration was achieved b

Early hyperoxia burden detected by cerebral near-infrared spectroscopy is superior to pulse oximetry for prediction of severe retinopathy of prematurity.

OBJECTIVE: Fractional tissue oxygen extraction (FTOE) is a measure derived from cerebral near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and simultaneous pulse oximetry (SpO2), capturing the proportion of oxygen delivered in arterial blood that is used by the target tissue. FTOE may provide a better proxy measurement of retinal hyperoxia than pulse oximetry alone and could provide insight into the risk for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). In this study, we directly compared hyperoxia burden calculated from FTOE with hyperoxia burden calculated from SpO2 alone in order to assess the strength of association

Brain activity and the perception of self-agency while viewing a video of tool manipulation: a functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Self-agency is the recognition of one's own movement and plays a vital role in purposeful, voluntary movement. Self-agency can occur in individuals who view their own finger movements as they are projected onto a screen and aligned with their actual hand position. Self-agency can also occur when tools are assimilated into the body schema. Here, we examined whether participants perceived self-agency when they viewed a video of a tool that they manipulated and whether the perception of self-agency correlated with simultaneous changes in oxyhemoglobin in the parietal or prefrontal cortical areas.

Changes in hemodynamics and tissue oxygenation saturation in the brain and skeletal muscle induced by speech therapy - a near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Arts speech therapy (AST) is a therapeutic method within complementary medicine and has been practiced for decades for various medical conditions. It comprises listening and the recitation of different forms of speech exercises under the guidance of a licensed speech therapist. The aim of our study was to noninvasively investigate whether different types of recitation influence hemodynamics and oxygenation in the brain and skeletal leg muscle using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Seventeen healthy volunteers (eight men and nine women, mean age ± standard deviation 35.6 ± 12.7 years) were en

Combining microdialysis and near-infrared spectroscopy for studying effects of low-load repetitive work on the intramuscular chemistry in trapezius myalgia.

Epidemiological research provides strong evidence for a link between repetitive work (RW) and the development of chronic trapezius myalgia (TM). The aims were to further elucidate if an accumulation of sensitising substances or impaired oxygenation is evident in painful muscles during RW. Females with TM (n = 14) were studied during rest, 30 minutes RW and 60 minutes recovery. Microdialysate samples were obtained to determine changes in intramuscular microdialysate (IMMD) [glutamate], [PGE(2)], [lactate], and [pyruvate] (i.e., [concentration]) relative to work. Muscle oxygenation (%StO(2)) was

Assessing the severity of perinatal hypoxia-ischemia in piglets using near-infrared spectroscopy to measure the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen.

Reduced cerebral function after neonatal hypoxia-ischemia is an early indicator of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Near-infrared spectroscopy offers a clinically relevant means of detecting impaired cerebral metabolism from the measurement of the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO2). The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between postinsult CMRO2 and duration of hypoxia-ischemia in piglets. Twelve piglets were subjected to randomly selected durations of hypoxia-ischemia (5-28 min) and five animals served as controls. Measurements of CMRO2 were taken before and for 24

Measurement of layer-like hemodynamic trends in scalp and cortex: implications for physiological baseline suppression in functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

A multidetector, continuous wave, near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) system is developed to examine whether the hemodynamics of the scalp and brain in adults contain significant layer-like hemodynamic trends. NIRS measurements are made using contrasting geometries, one with four detectors equidistant from a source 33 mm away, and one with detectors collinear with the source (5 to 33 mm away). When NIRS time series are acquired over the prefrontal cortex from resting adults using both geometries, variations among the time series are consistent with a substantially homogeneous two-layer model (p<

Feasibility and extension of universal quantitative models for moisture content determination in beta-lactam powder injections by near-infrared spectroscopy.

In present work, we investigated the feasibility of universal calibration models for moisture content determination of a much complicated products system of powder injections to simulate the process of building universal models for drug preparations with same INN (International Nonproprietary Name) from diverse formulations and sources. We also extended the applicability of universal model by model updating and calibration transfer. Firstly, a moisture content quantitative model for ceftriaxone sodium for injection was developed, the results show that calibration model established for products

Near-infrared spectroscopy and transcutaneous oxygen pressure during exercise to detect arterial ischemia at the buttock level: comparison with arteriography.

BACKGROUND: Noninvasive tests are required to detect (in both male and female subjects and side by side) arteries toward the hypogastric circulation that are likely to present significant lesions as a cause of buttock claudication. METHODS: We compared the accuracy of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and transcutaneous oxygen pressure (TCP o 2 ) on both buttocks during walking tests to detect lesions on the arteries toward the hypogastric circulation. NIRS was considered abnormal if recovery time to pre-exercise values was greater than 240 seconds for tissue oxygen saturation (absent data be

Use of mitochondrial inhibitors to demonstrate that cytochrome oxidase near-infrared spectroscopy can measure mitochondrial dysfunction noninvasively in the brain.

The use of near-infrared spectroscopy to measure noninvasively changes in the redox state of cerebral cytochrome oxidase in vivo is controversial. We therefore tested these measurements using a multiwavelength detector in the neonatal pig brain. Exchange transfusion with perfluorocarbons revealed that the spectrum of cytochrome oxidase in the near-infrared was identical in the neonatal pig, the adult rat, and in the purified enzyme. Under normoxic conditions, the neonatal pig brain contained 15 micromol/L deoxyhemoglobin, 29 micromol/L oxyhemoglobin, and 1.2 micromol/L oxidized cytochrome oxid

Sex-differences in resting state dorsolateral prefrontal cortex: comparing motion correction methods in resting state functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS).

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a low cost, non-invasive alternative for studies comparing task-based activity of prefrontal cortex regions for cognitive studies with clinical relevance. However, motion correction algorithms are a major source of methodological variability in fNIRS studies, obscuring neurobiological variability in prefrontal hemodynamic response and leading to irreproducible findings. Further, motion correction fNIRS studies disregard sex-differences in hemodynamic response at resting state dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, especially fewer studies are carried o

Simultaneous species origin authentication and adulterant quantification in specialty milk powders using near-infrared spectroscopy and multi-task deep learning.

The adulteration of high-value specialty milk powder with low-cost bovine milk poses a serious challenge to food safety and authenticity. To address this issue, this study proposes a unified end-to-end multi-task learning multilayer perceptron (MTL-MLP) framework. This framework directly maps collinear spectral features to a deep shared latent space with minimal spectral signal preprocessing, and employing a novel Concentration-Conditioned Loss Optimization (CCLO) dynamic masking mechanism, the model successfully overcomes the "matrix swamping effect" under severe adulteration. As corroborated
