A deleterious frameshift insertion mutation in the ZNF142 gene leads to intellectual developmental disorder with impaired speech in three affected siblings: Clinical features and literature review.

BACKGROUND: ZNF142 gene is a protein-coding gene encoding Zinc Finger Protein 142. ZNF proteins are a vast group of cellular effectors with a wide range of functions such as signal transduction, transcriptional regulation, meiotic recombination, DNA repair, development, and cell migration. Mutations in the ZNF142 gene are related to neurodevelopmental disorder with impaired speech and hyperkinetic movements (NEDISHM). This study on a family with three affected siblings identified a pathogenic frameshift insertion variant. In addition, we conducted a review of the literature on previously repor

Self-referential processing during observation of a speech performance task in social anxiety disorder from pre- to post-treatment: Evidence of disrupted neural activation.

Self-referential processing is critical to understanding social anxiety disorder (SAD). This study examined neural differences in self-referential processing in healthy controls (HC) and participants with SAD at pre- and post-treatment. Participants (n = 64) underwent fMRI scanning while viewing a video of themselves ("Self") or another person ("Other"). SAD participants were randomized to cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), or waitlist, and were re-scanned at post-treatment. In SAD vs. HC, the fusiform face area (FFA) showed significantly more activation

Is there an association between age at first words and speech sound disorders among 4- to 5-year-old children? An epidemiological cross-sectional study based on parental reports.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of the period of emergence of the first words and its interactions with other risk factors in predicting the development of speech sound disorder (SSD) among 4- to 5-year-old children. METHODS: After 373 children underwent otolaryngology and speech pathology examinations, their parents answered a questionnaire about potential risk factors for speech impairment. The presence of SSD was identified by a speech pathologist who administered Fanzago's Articulation Test to each child. Multivariate logistic analysis was used to explore the relationships between vari

Co-design to consensus: Identifying the core elements of a novel intervention for pre-school children with co-occurring phonological speech sound disorder (SSD) and developmental language disorder (DLD) using a modified e-Delphi approach.

INTRODUCTION: Although frequently seen in clinical services, there are few interventions which have been developed specifically to meet the needs of pre-school children with co-occurring features of a phonological speech sound disorder (P-SSD) and developmental language disorder (DLD). This study aims to achieve consensus on the core elements of a novel intervention for pre-school children with co-occurring features of P-SSD and DLD ("SWanS"- Supporting Words and Sounds), where expressive vocabulary and speech comprehensibility are joint outcomes of interest. METHODS: Forty-seven potential co

Evaluating the Pattern of Relationships of Speech and Language Deficits with Executive Functions, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Facets of Giftedness in Greek Preschool Children. A Preliminary Analysis.

Speech and language deficits often occur in preschool children, and empirical studies have indicated an association between language impairments and challenges in different cognitive domains. The primary aim of the current study was to evaluate the associations between speech and language deficits, executive function (EF) impairments, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and aspects of giftedness in Greek preschoolers based on assessments from their teachers. Investigating the associations between aspects of EFs, ADHD, and giftedness was another objective of the current study. Fina

Effects of group-based music therapy combined with speech therapy on language and social skills in preschool children with autism spectrum disorder: An exploratory randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by early difficulties in language and social communication. While speech therapy is a core early intervention, music therapy has been increasingly applied to support social-emotional development. However, evidence regarding the additive effects of group-based music therapy combined with speech therapy in preschool children with ASD remains limited. METHOD: This exploratory randomized controlled trial enrolled (RCT) preschool children aged 3-5 years with ASD and language delay. Participants were randomly assigned to a Music Therapy gr

'To Know That You Are a Link in the Chain': A Realist Evaluation to Explore How Digital, Intensive, Parent-Implemented Interventions Work for Children With Speech Sound Disorder, Why, and for Whom.

INTRODUCTION: Children with moderate to severe speech sound disorder (SSD) need intensive therapy to increase intervention effectiveness and efficiency. However, worldwide speech and language therapists (SLTs) report that it is difficult to implement recommended intervention intensities in clinical practice. Supporting parents/carers to deliver home-intervention, facilitated through digital tools, has the potential to circumvent these difficulties and increase practice intensity. This realist evaluation builds on our earlier realist review on intensive, digital, parent-implemented intervention

The Social Communication Intervention Project: a randomized controlled trial of the effectiveness of speech and language therapy for school-age children who have pragmatic and social communication problems with or without autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Children who show disproportionate difficulty with the pragmatic as compared with the structural aspects of language are described as having pragmatic language impairment (PLI) or social communication disorder (SCD). Some children who have PLI also show mild social impairments associated with high-functioning autism or autism spectrum disorder (ASD). There is little robust evidence of effectiveness of speech-language interventions which target the language, pragmatic or social communication needs of these children. AIMS: To evaluate the effectiveness of an intensive manualized soc

How Young Children Learn Language and Speech.

Pediatric clinicians are on the front line for prevention of language and speech disorders. This review uses prevailing theories and recent data to justify strategies for prevention, screening and detection, diagnosis, and treatment of language and speech disorders. Primary prevention rests on theories that language learning is an interaction between the child's learning capacities and the language environment. Language learning occurs in a social context with active child engagement. Theories support parent education and public programs that increase children's exposure to child-directed spee…
