STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
OBJECTIVES: Assess differences between staged (≤3 days) and same-day surgery in perioperative factors, radiographic measures, and complications.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Surgical adult spinal deformity correction may require combined anterior and posterior approaches. To modulate risk, some surgeons perform surgery that is expected to be longer and/or more complex in two stages. Prior studies comparing staged (≥7 days) and same-day surgery demonstrated mixed results and none have examined results with shorter staging intervals.
METHODS: Retrospec

UNLABELLED: Population-based studies performed with vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) morphometric technology are lacking in postmenopausal osteoporosis. In this study, we show a lower than expected prevalence of vertebral fractures, a high prevalence of minor vertebral deformities, and a clear association with clinical and densitometric parameters indicating the usefulness of this approach.
INTRODUCTION: Adequate epidemiological data on the prevalence of vertebral fractures (VF) is essential in studies of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Routine DXA-assisted VFA may be useful to determine the

To investigate the frequency and clinical characteristics of camptocormia in Chinese PD patients, we included 705 patients with PD and studied the clinical features and prevalence of camptocormia. Forty-six (6.5%) patients presented with camptocormia at the time of evaluation. The mean disease duration of PD patients with camptocormia was significantly longer than that without camptocormia (P < 0.01). After adjusted for age and disease duration, compared with patients without camptocormia, PD patients with camptocormia presented with higher score of UPDRS part III (P < 0.01), higher H&Y stage

Osteopenia is considered a common phenomenon in patients who have scoliosis. Quantitative ultrasound has been used to assess skeletal status for decades, and recently ultrasound imaging using reflection signals from vertebrae were as well applied to measure spinal curvatures in children with scoliosis. The objectives of this study were to develop a new method that can robustly extract a parameter from ultrasound spinal data for estimating bone quality of scoliotic patients and to investigate the potential of the parameter in predicting curve progression. The frequency amplitude index (FAI) was…

Zygapophyseal, or facet, joints are complicated biomechanical structures in the spine, with a complex three-dimensional (3D) anatomy, variable mechanical functions in different spinal movements, and effects on the overall spine mechanical behavior. The 3D morphology of the facet joint is linked to its biomechanical function. Failure of the biomechanical function of the facet joint leads to osteoarthritic changes in it and is implicated in other spinal disorders such as degenerative spondylolisthesis. Facet joints and intervertebral disk are part of an entity called the spinal motion segment, t

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Disparity in spread of spinal anesthesia is a known complication in scoliosis patients. Our primary aim was to compare this disparity based on Cobb Angle and thorocolumbar spine curvature. Secondary aim was to calculate the appropriate lateral angulation of the spinal needle from midline for successful lumbar puncture.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All poliomyelitis patients with scoliosis posted for lower limb orthopedic contracture release surgeries were enrolled into Group A (Cobb Angle <50°), Group B (Cobb Angle >50°), and on thoracolumbar curve into Group R (Right), Group L

This case report documents an unusual presentation of dopa-responsive dystonia (DRD) in three siblings (two females, one male) which simulated cerebral palsy (CP) and describes the evolution of their spinal deformity in relation to growth and responsiveness to levodopa therapy. The siblings were normal at birth with a negative history of neurological disease or spinal imbalance. They showed marked phenotypic variation but all developed progressive scoliosis and neurological impairment with mixed spastic dystonic features, leading to the misdiagnosis of spastic dystonic CP. Age at establishment

BACKGROUND: Spinal deformity surgery (SDS) is usually accompanied by significant intraoperative blood loss and transfusion, which is not without risk, as transfusions can lead to transfusion reactions, transmission of infections, and immunosuppression. Therefore, limiting unnecessary intraoperative blood transfusion (IBT) by accurately predicting transfusion requirements is an important goal.
METHODS: Include patients with spinal deformities who received SDS at 11 large medical centers in China from 2012 to 2022. A total of 162 cases were randomized into a training cohort (70%) and a testing
