In this study, 101 patients with massive splenomegaly (MS) and 41 with moderate splenomegaly (MoS) from Kassala, Eastern Sudan, were included. The patients were recruited during a peak and the end of a malaria season and during a dry season between 2007 and 2008. A 13-years-old girl was admitted to our hospital with high levels of serum IgM, thrombocytopenia and splenomegaly. Not only IgG but also IgM were found on the surface of platelets by flow-cytometry. Direct Coombs' test was positive, and IgG was also found on the surface of red blood cells. After splenectomy, platelet count was increased and serum IgM was decreased. The biopsy of salivary glands showed infiltration of lymphocytes around the ducts, and Shirmer test revealed slightly decreased secretion of tears, suggesting subclinical Sjögren syndrome.

We present a case report of laparoscopic splenectomy in two patients with congenital spherocytosis. A 23-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman with splenomegaly due to congenital spherocytosis underwent laparoscopic splenectomy. Their postoperative course was uncomplicated and they were discharged on the second and fourth postoperative day, respectively.

Isolates of Trypanosoma brucei and Trypanosoma congolense from the blood of cattle were used to infect growing rats. Despite the use of similar infective doses, T. brucei parasitaemia appeared earlier than T. congolense parasitaemia. After the same period of parasitaemia, the degrees of anaemia, splenomegaly and hepatomegaly were similar in both infections. The impact of mass treatment with praziquantel on 241 individuals, 131 males and 110 females in Napu Valley, Indonesia was studied. The pre-treatment overall stool positive cases ranged from 43% to 79%, the highest in the 20-29 age group. Post-treatment follow-up study showed that the cases dropped to 2.5%.
