C cells of the thyroid probably exert a paracrine control on follicular cells through secretion of peptides such as calcitonin and somatostatin. The aim of the present study was to investigate the expression of different peptides produced by C cells in rat thyroid and in the different morphological and pathological conditions of the human thyroid. Therefore we employed the immunohistochemical double-staining method using anti-calcitonin and anti-somatostatin antibodies. Adult Onchocerca volvulus worms were extracted from alcohol-fixed nodules by collagenese digestion. The worms were stained in Mayer's haematoxylin and brought up into glycerol. In this viscous fluid the stained and cleared worms could be unravelled in sequential lengths of 4-6 cm and mounted in glycerol on slides for longitudinal examination of their structure. A case of signet ring cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder with concomitant Schistosoma haematobium infection is reported with a histochemical study of mucous secretion. This rare kind of tumor differentiation in Schistosoma-related neoplasms may suggest that the tumor-promoting stimuli, acting on reserve cells of bladder epithelium, do not determine the tumor differentiation pattern as strictly as currently thought.

We report a case of the Werdnig-Hoffmann disease in a 4-month-old male infant. The morphological study revealed perimysial fibrosis, variability in the size of muscle fibers, absence of target fibers, few central nuclei and normality in vessels, nerves and neuromuscular junctions. The morphometrical examination showed the existence of normal-sized and atrophic fibers in both fibrillar types, as well as in hypertrophic type I fibers. The percentage of fibrillar types and the data obtained from the form factor are normal. Random distribution of type I and II muscle fibers were observed.

Samples of mixed saliva and of parotid and sublingual/submandibular saliva fractions from four donors were subjected to instantaneous solidification in liquid nitrogen followed by sectioning in a microtome/cryostat. The sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin, periodic acid-Schiff, Alcian blue, Oil-red-O, or Sudan Black B and then examined at the light-microscopic level. In all the sectioned samples several previously never described features were observed, the most pronounced of which were a loose overall network structure and collections of lipoid droplets often in a loose arrangement.

Authors examined the aponeurosis of 23 patients with Dupuytren's contracture and of 5, formerly healthy persons, who died in consequence of accidents. It was found that the IgA and IgM content of the palmar aponeurosis is significantly elevated in Dupuytren's disease. The distribution of the immunglobulin containing cells and the fibronection localisation of the aponeurosis was also examined. On the basis of their examinations they think that the autoimmun mechanism may have a role in the development of Dupuytren's disease.

Dietary thiamine deficiency, enhanced by pyrithiamine administration in adult rats, produces overt lesions in the brain that are especially prominent in the thalamus. We have measured acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and the butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) activities along strips of resected bowel specimens from thirteen children with Hirschsprung's disease. The AChE activity was variable along the length of the resected bowel, while the BChE activity remained constant. By contrast, the AChE/BChE ratio decreased rapidly to low levels when ganglion cells were present. We suggest that this ratio can be used to determine the normal segments of the bowel, to specify the anatomic forms (i.e. rectal or rectosigmoid) and may be useful in determining the anastomotic level.

A 7-year-old girl is described with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome Type VIII. Symptoms mainly consisted of rapid breakdown of the periodontal tissues. The gingiva exhibited the presence of peculiar previously unidentified cell-poor masses resembling fibrin by their staining properties. Possibly, this histologic feature may be a diagnostic aid in Ehlers-Danlos syndrome Type VIII.
