Acid formation in sucrose-exposed dental plaque in relation to caries incidence in schoolchildren.

The aim was to investigate the composition and concentration of organic acids produced by plaque bacteria in vivo and its possible relation to caries development in schoolchildren. Sucrose-exposed pooled plaque from 25 healthy teenagers was collected and the levels of Streptococcus mutans and lactobacilli were estimated. The acid anions were analysed with isotachophoresis. The prevalence and incidence of dental caries during a 2-year period was recorded. Depending on the amount of plaque collected, the subjects were divided into a low (n = 12) and a high (n = 13) plaque weight group. The domin…

Antibacterial activity of dental gels containing combinations of amine fluoride, stannous fluoride, and chlorhexidine against cariogenic bacteria.

The in vitro susceptibility of Streptococcus mutans, S. sobrinus and Lactobacillus casei to dental gels containing various combinations of amine fluoride (AmF 297), stannous fluoride (SnF2), and chlorhexidine (CHX) was studied. The combination of AmF-SnF2 with a total fluoride content of 1.2% was the most effective against mutans streptococci but not against L. casei. At notably lower total fluoride concentration (0.4%), AmF as such or combined with SnF2, was significantly less effective against mutans streptococci than CHX or CHX-AmF-SnF2 combinations. CHX-AmF combination was a slightly more …

Rapid multiplex real-time PCR assay using a portable device for the detection of oral pathogens.

Colonization by several oral pathogens and the onset of oral diseases, such as dental caries and periodontal diseases, are closely related. Therefore, the analysis of pathogens in oral specimens would be helpful for the risk assessment of oral diseases. We developed a rapid multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method using a portable device and newly designed probe/primer sets to detect the oral pathogens Streptococcus mutans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, and Tannerella forsythia. The theoretical minimum detectable cell numbers of S. mutans, P. gingivalis, T. d…

Hydrogen-rich electrolyzed water is a useful mouthwash due to its biofilm-control properties: an in vitro and in vivo study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated the inhibitory effect of hydrogen-rich water on biofilm formation. However, hydrogen-rich electrolyzed water (HEW) has not been evaluated as mouthwash, despite being economical, convenient, and biologically safe. We assessed the antibiofilm effects of HEW on Streptococcus mutans and its potential as a mouthwash. METHODS: The effect of HEW on S. mutans growth was assessed by measuring bacterial colony-forming units, and biofilm formation capacity was examined by crystal violet staining after culturing on a polystyrene plate. The effect of HEW on b…

Sinusitis of dental origin.

Acute or chronic sinusitis may be odontogenic. Bacteria involved in odontogenic sinusitis are specific organisms associated with the teeth (Streptococcus sanguis, Streptococcus salivarius, Streptococcus mutans, anaerobic germs). They are often secondary to an intrasinus foreign body following periodontitis. The treatment is both naso-sinusal and dental. Cysts of the maxilla can also invade the sinus. In particular, radiculo-dental cysts (periapical) must be surgically excised, in some cases associated with a middle meatotomy. Finally, one should look for oro-antral fistulae. The surgical techn…

Anaerobic radiometric detection of facultative Gram-positive cocci in blood.

Radiometric detection of facultative gram-positive cocci, particularly streptococci, has been reported to be suboptimal. A recently marketed anaerobic Bactec bottle (7C) with purportedly improved capability to detect facultative gram-positive cocci in blood was compared with the previously available bottle in a study of simulated bacteremia. The Bactec system detected all beta-hemolytic streptococci and enterococci tested. Detection of alpha-hemolytic streptococci was improved in general. However, detection of Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus bovis and Streptococcus pneumoniae remained subo…
