The authors present a cross-sectional survey designed to evaluate the presence of delirium in patients with neurological emergencies. Two hundred and two patients were included in the study: 14.9% of subjects had delirium; 62.4% had no arousal disturbances; and 22.7% presented a coma or stupor state. Findings revealed that the presence of a cerebral infection, the presence of multiple etiologies, and the location of lesions in the frontal and temporal lobes were all associated with delirium. Results substantiate that delirium is a frequent occurrence in neurological patients and that the prese…

The postoperative complications of two collectives are compared: 100 patients with space-occupying processes in the base of the skull and 100 patients with mainly space occupying intracerebral processes. The first collective was exclusively, the second mainly operated on microsurgically. The group showing processes of the base of the skull shows a greater number and more frequently occurring complications than the comparative group. The relation to the brain stem as a cause of this fact is discussed. In all studied patients, no cerebellar stupor occurred. This seems to be in relation with the …

During deep-sea freediving, many freedivers describe symptoms fairly similar to what has been related to inert gas narcosis in scuba divers. This manuscript aims to present the potential mechanisms underlying these symptoms. First, known mechanisms of narcosis are summarized while scuba diving. Then, potential underlying mechanisms involving the toxicity of gases (nitrogen, carbon dioxide and oxygen) are presented in freedivers. As the symptoms are felt during ascent, nitrogen is likely not the only gas involved. Since freedivers are frequently exposed to hypercapnic hypoxia toward the end of
