Integrated behavioral treatments for comorbid anxiety and substance use disorders: A model for understanding integrated treatment approaches and meta-analysis to evaluate their efficacy.

INTRODUCTION: Substance use disorders (SUD) and anxiety disorders are highly comorbid, and this comorbidity is associated with poor clinical outcomes. Emerging research in the last decade has shifted from addressing these problems separately to the development and evaluation of behavioral treatments that integrate care for anxiety disorders (or elevated symptoms of anxiety) and SUD. METHODS: An extensive literature search revealed a sufficient number of studies (K=11) to conduct a meta-analysis comparing the efficacy of integrated SUD/anxiety disorder behavioral treatment to SUD treatment alo

Substance use and Stress-Induced Cognitive Impairment: The Causes of Anxiety and Depression among College Students.

This study sought to examine the effects of substance use and stress-induced cognitive impairment on anxiety and depression among college students. The data for this study came from a sample of 328 undergraduate students from a public university. The subjects in this study completed a 101-item self-administered questionnaire, which was part of a larger study on college stress. This study included not only students who are typically expected to seek help at the counseling centers, but it expanded to include self-reported cases of students who do not have documented problems of substance use or

Psychedelics: Threshold of a Therapeutic Revolution.

This Special Issue of Neuropharmacology on psychedelics provides a timely and comprehensive update on progress following the previous Neuropharmacology Special Issue "Psychedelics: New Doors, Altered Perceptions". Remarkable advances have been made in basic and clinical research on psychedelics in the five years since 2018. It is partly based on the seminar series focused on psilocybin organized by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA from April to June 2021, the "NIH Psilocybin Research Speaker Series". Participants were world leading experts, including scientists, medical practitione

[Unauthorized absence and recidivism during court ordered psychiatric treatment leave].

BACKGROUND: Leave is an essential part of treatment within the framework of the tbs measure (court ordered psychiatric treatment for offenders with a mental disorder). Traditionally, these leaves lead to concerns about safety. AIM: To study how often tbs-patients do not return from leave (on time) and how often they commit a crime during an unauthorized absence (UA). In addition, we investigate whether patient or offence characteristics can predict an UA. METHOD: All UA’s between 2009-2020 were examined. We also analysed the patient characteristics of 11,525 permit applications between

Clinical and biobehavioral perspectives: Is medication overuse headache a behavior of dependence?

Medication overuse headache (MOH), previously known as analgesic abuse headache or medication misuse headaches, is a common form of chronic headache disorder that has a detrimental impact on health and society. Although it has been widely accepted that overusing abortive medications is paradoxically the cause of MOH and drug discontinuation is the treatment of choice, ongoing debates exist as to whether drug consumption per se is the cause or consequence of headache chronification. Certain features in MOH such as their compulsive drug-seeking behavior, withdrawal headaches and high relapse rat

Psychedelic Treatments for Psychiatric Disorders: A Systematic Review and Thematic Synthesis of Patient Experiences in Qualitative Studies.

INTRODUCTION: Interest in the use of psychedelic substances for the treatment of mental disorders is increasing. Processes that may affect therapeutic change are not yet fully understood. Qualitative research methods are increasingly used to examine patient accounts; however, currently, no systematic review exists that synthesizes these findings in relation to the use of psychedelics for the treatment of mental disorders. OBJECTIVE: To provide an overview of salient themes in patient experiences of psychedelic treatments for mental disorders, presenting both common and diverging elements in p

Substance use disorders and violent behaviour in patients with severe mental disorders: A prospective, multicentre study.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between alcohol and substance use and the risk of violence exhibited by patients with mental disorders is under-researched. This prospective cohort study aims to compare patients with severe mental disorders and with different substance use behaviors in terms of sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, hostility, impulsivity and aggressive behaviors. Furthermore, this study aims to assess differences in violent behaviors during a 1-year monitoring follow-up. METHODS: A total of 378 participants with severe mental disorders from Italian residential facilities

Independent associations and effect modification between lifetime substance use and recent mood disorder diagnosis with household food insecurity.

Poor mental health and substance use are associated with food insecurity, however, their potential combined effects have not been studied. This study explored independent associations and effect modification between lifetime substance use and mood disorder in relation to food insecurity. Poisson regression analysis of data from British Columbia respondents (n = 13,450; 12 years+) in the 2007/08 Canadian Community Health Survey was conducted. Measures included The Household Food Security Survey Module (7.3% food insecure), recent diagnosis of a mood disorder (self-reported; 9.5%), lifetime use

[Substance-induced sleep disorders and abuse of hypnotics].

The intake of a large variety of substances has a negative impact on sleep. Widely used, readily available substances like alcohol, nicotine, or caffeine need to be mentioned here. Illicit drugs (e.g., heroin or ecstasy) have different mechanisms of action with a high sleep-disrupting potential. Prescription drugs, i.e., corticosteroids or β-blockers, may also negatively affect sleep. An important question is whether the intake of hypnotics, especially benzodiazepines, may have a negative long-term effect on sleep. Classical benzodiazepines (BZ) initially lead to a reduction of nocturnal wake

Imaging cognitive deficits in drug abuse.

The neuropsychological network is a complex structure. To identify processes location and network capacity the brain imaging techniques together and in combination with other neuropsychological techniques and the expanding of well elaborated designs provide us with a multidimensional understanding, and contributes to the understanding of each illicit drug's character, which is of importance in designing of new treatment programs and clinical practice. Cannabis, MDMA, amphetamine, cocaine, and heroin abusers display both acute effects and chronic effects, deficits in attention, memory, and exec

Drug-induced refractory headache.

Two hundred patients who were taking daily symptomatic or immediate relief medications, often in excessive quantities, yet suffering from daily or near daily severe headaches were studied. One hundred and sixteen (58%) of them were also taking concomitant prophylactic medications and they were ineffective. Low-tyramine, low-caffeine dietary instructions and biofeedback training were given to all patients. The effect of continuing symptomatic medications, discontinuing symptomatic medications, and adding or changing prophylactic medications were studied in the various treatment groups. It is co

Smoking cessation approaches for persons with mental illness or addictive disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Persons with psychiatric illnesses are about twice as likely as the general population to smoke tobacco. They also tend to smoke more heavily than other smokers. This critical review of the literature identified 24 empirical studies of outcomes of smoking cessation approaches used with samples of persons with mental disorders. METHODS: The authors conducted searches of large health care and other databases for the years 1991 through 2001, using the key terms smoking, smoking cessation, nicotine, health/hospital/smoke-free policy, and psychiatry/ mental/substance abuse disorders. Pathological gambling: addiction or compulsion?

There is considerable debate about the appropriate conceptualization of pathological gambling and its place in psychiatric nosology. The authors examined the existing research on different areas of pathological gambling to find evidence for a particular model of this disorder. There are 2 dominant models of pathological gambling: as a nonpharmacologic addiction and as an obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorder. The data available from different areas seem to converge in suggesting that pathological gambling has characteristics that are similar to those of substance abuse, and less close to thos
