3-Amino-polydeoxy disaccharides have been prepared by condensation of a glycal with methyl 2,3,6-trideoxy-alpha-L-erythro-(or threo)-hex-2-enopyranoside in the presence of N-iodosuccinimide. After acid hydrolysis of the glycoside, 1,4-addition of hydrazoic acid to the corresponding hex-2-enopyranose led to 3-azido-disaccharides which were acetylated. Reduction of the azido group gave 2,2'-dideoxy- or 2,2'-dideoxy-2'-iodo compounds. A new solid-phase thrombin (EC 3.4.21.5) was prepared through conjugation of the enzyme under mild conditions to a glass support bearing an active ester of N-hydroxysuccinimide. Hemostats that can strongly adhere to wound tissue and are easy to remove when stopping bleeding are favored for the control of noncompressible hemorrhage. Here, we prepared a citric acid (CA)-crosslinked and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) ester-activated carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-NHS) aerogel for noncompressible hemostasis. CA was used to crosslink CMC to form a strengthened structure. NHS ester was introduced to activate the adhesion of CMC-NHS aerogel to wound tissue and promoted blood coagulation through the formation of amide crosslinks between CMC and erythrocytes and free blood proteins.

A convenient method for the synthesis of symmetrical azobenzenes is reported. This one-step procedure involves treatment of anilines with N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS) and organic base 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU). A wide range of commercially available substituted anilines readily participate in this reaction to produce the corresponding azobenzenes in moderate-to-excellent yields in minutes.

α-Amino γ-lactams have been synthesized from carbohydrate derived cyclopropanecarboxylates using N-iodosuccinimide (NIS) and NaN3. Cyclopropane ring opening with NIS and NaN3 in different solvents has been studied. Reductive cyclization of the intermediate di-azides leads to the carbohydrate fused α-amino γ-lactam and γ-lactams. Additionally, the methodology has been successfully extended to the synthesis of a glycopeptide.
