The impact of oral refined sugar consumption on male reproductive parameters: The role of cessation.

OBJECTIVE: Refined sugar is a widely consumed dietary component that has been implicated in several health complications, including reproductive dysfunction. Despite growing concern regarding its potential endocrine-disrupt-ing effects, the reversibility of its impact on male reproduc-tive parameters remains underexplored. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of oral refined sugar consumption on male reproductive parameters in Wistar rats and to in-vestigate the role of sugar cessation in potential recovery. METHODS: Forty male Wistar rats were randomly divid-ed into eight groups (n=5): a

Sweet Relief or Risky Substitute? Applying Secondary Risk Theory to Sugar Consumption.

Excessive sugar consumption is widely recognized as a serious health risk, linked to obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Sugar substitutes are often promoted as a healthier alternative, yet they carry their own set of potential risks, creating a complex decision-making context for consumers. This study applies secondary risk theory to examine how individuals evaluate both the primary risks of sugar consumption and the secondary risks of sugar substitutes when deciding to opt (or not) for sugar substitutes. Using a between-subjects experimental design, we manipulated severity and sus

A Call for Dietary Sugar Restriction Policy in India in Light of Oral Health Concerns.

Rising sugar consumption in India, particularly from sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and ultra-processed foods, has intensified the burden of oral and systemic diseases. Excessive intake of free sugars is strongly linked with dental caries, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, contributing to escalating health and economic costs. Despite global guidelines advocating for reduced free sugar intake, India lacks a comprehensive national strategy to address this shared risk factor for oral and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). This article integrates international evidence and Ind…

Sugar-Based Polyesters: From Glux-Diol Synthesis to Its Enzymatic Polymerization.

This work details the synthesis of 2,4:3,5-di-O-methylene-d-glucitol (glux-diol), a bicyclic acetal derivative of d-glucose obtained from d-glucono-1,5-lactone, and also explores its subsequent polymerization to produce biobased polyesters. Key steps for the synthesis of glux-diol are (i) protection with paraformaldehyde, (ii) Fischer esterification, and (iii) reduction with lithium aluminum hydride (LiAlH4). A new purification method was developed to effectively remove inorganic salt byproducts, which can hinder polymerization. The sugar-based monomer was then copolymerized with C4-C10 dimeth

CRANBERRY: A Coarse-grained RNA Model with Sugar Puckering and Noncanonical Base Pairing.

We introduce a new coarse-grained model "CRANBERRY" that incorporates sugar puckering and non-canonical base pairing, two factors central to RNA structure and dynamics, yet rarely included in most coarse-grained models. Our model is parameterized through a contrastive divergence approach, combined with fine-tuning strategies to improve accuracy in generating disordered states, a feature that is critical for the accurate description of thermodynamics. This two-stage training procedure greatly enhances cooperative folding behavior. Due to these advances, CRANBERRY maintains native-like structure

An engineered bacterial symbiont maps micron-scale sugar gradients in the honeybee gut.

The honeybee gut microbiota plays a key role in shaping host health and susceptibility to disease. Yet, the nutrient environment it experiences within the gut remains poorly characterized. In particular, little is known about the spatial distribution of nutrients across the microbial community, as resolving such fine gradients in vivo has been technically challenging. Here, we engineer the native honeybee symbiont Snodgrassella alvi as a living biosensor to quantify the bioavailability of the dietary sugar arabinose within the gut. By expanding the genetic toolkit for S. alvi through chromosom

Smog, sugar, and synapses: Unraveling the PM2.5-insulin resistance-Alzheimer's disease axis.

Chronic exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and insulin resistance (IR) are each linked to Alzheimer's disease (AD), but IR has not been systematically positioned as a mechanistic conduit through which PM2.5 heightens AD vulnerability. Drawing on epidemiological, animal, and cellular studies, this review outlines converging pathways along a PM2.5-IR-AD axis: chronic neuroinflammation, oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction, blood-brain barrier disruption, and impaired amyloid-β (Aβ) clearance. Across sections, study-specific limitations are comprehensively discussed. Positionin

Optimization of the ZigBee Routing Algorithm for the Beidou Sugar Beet Environmental Monitoring System.

In remote areas where sugar beets are grown on a large scale, inadequate ground-based communication networks can easily lead to information silos in farmland, as well as technical challenges such as uneven node power consumption and short lifespans during the long-term operation of wireless sensor networks. To address these challenges, a real-time field environment monitoring system for sugar beet fields based on the Beidou satellite system and ZigBee wireless sensor networks has been developed, employing a three-tier architecture comprising a perception layer, a network layer, and an applicat

The Impact of Sugar Moieties on the Solubility of Naringin-Neohesperidin Co-Amorphous Solid Dispersions.

Background/Objectives: Co-amorphous solid dispersions (c-ASD) are a promising strategy for enhancing the dissolution of poorly water-soluble drugs. Naringin (NA) and neohesperidin (NE) are dihydroflavonoid components and are poorly soluble. They can form a c-ASD. Concerning the c-ASD formation mechanism, the intermolecular forces between the non-sugar aglycones of NA and NE have been determined; however, the roles of the sugar chains, which account for nearly 50% of the overall molecular weight of both compounds, are unclear. Therefore, the impact of the sugar moiety on the solubility of NA-NE

Convergent and lineage-specific genomic changes shape adaptations in sugar-consuming birds.

High-sugar diets cause human metabolic diseases, yet several bird lineages convergently adapted to feeding on sugar-rich nectar or fruits. We investigated the underlying molecular mechanisms in hummingbirds, parrots, honeyeaters, and sunbirds by generating nine new genomes and 90 tissue-specific transcriptomes. Comparative screens revealed an excess of repeated selection in both protein-coding and regulatory sequences in sugar-feeding birds, suggesting reuse of genetic elements. Sequence or expression changes in sugar-feeders affect genes involved in blood pressure regulation and lipid, amino

Azide-Alkene Cycloaddition and Visible-Light-Mediated Wolff Rearrangement of Sugar Enones.

The synthesis of branched carbohydrate β-amino esters is described using the Wolff rearrangement of a diazoketone derived from the pyrolysis product (-)-levoglucosenone (LGO). An azide-alkene cycloaddition on LGO catalyzed by methanesulfonic acid directly afforded β-amino diazoketones via the triazoline. A subsequent visible-light-mediated Wolff rearrangement resulted in ring-contraction, giving a series of branched deoxyamino sugars with excellent diastereoselectivity (>20:1). The use of 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol as solvent at subambient temperature improved the yields of the ester relative to r…

REM Gene Family in Sugar Beet and Functional BvREM12 in Salt Stress Tolerance.

Soil salinization acts as a major abiotic stress and severely hampers global agricultural productivity. Elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying plant salt tolerance is of great significance for crop improvement. Remorin (REM) proteins are plant-specific membrane marker proteins that play a key role in stress signaling; however, their function in the salt tolerance response of sugar beet remains unclear. In this study, 14 BvREM gene family members were identified. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that this family can be divided into five subgroups and exhibits significant interspecies col

From sugar to flames: the detrimental role of pyroptosis in diabetes-associated bone loss.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is increasingly recognized as a major risk factor for skeletal fragility, characterized by impaired bone quality and increased fracture susceptibility. Chronic hyperglycemia induces metabolic stress, oxidative injury, and low-grade inflammation, all of which disrupt normal bone remodeling. Accumulating evidence indicates that pyroptosis, a highly inflammatory form of programmed cell death, has emerged as a critical mechanistic link between diabetes and bone loss. Pyroptosis is driven by inflammasome activation, particularly the NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain-conta

Sugar import suppresses Klebsiella pneumoniae Mucoidy in a cAMP-CRP-dependent manner.

Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKp) causes severe invasive infections in community and hospital settings, often originating from gut colonization. Capsular polysaccharide (CPS) and its associated features are a key hvKp virulence factor. Altering CPS properties, such as mucoidy, in response to environmental cues enhances K. pneumoniae fitness. While several physical and nutrient cues influence mucoidy, the molecular mechanisms by which host-relevant signals, such as sugars, regulate mucoidy remain undefined. Here, we show that sugar import, not catabolism, broadly suppresses hvKp mucoid…

The connection between poor oral health and metabolic disease: the sugar link theory.

The purpose of this narrative review is to explore the idea that habitual and excessive intake of sugar and ultraprocessed foods (UPFs) may be the link between poor oral health (specifically dental caries) and metabolic disease and the common upstream factor that explains the association between these conditions. This proposed sugar link theory posits a parallel between declines in oral health and systemic health, beginning with the detrimental impacts of sugar and UPFs on the oral and gut microbiomes (dysbiosis). The resulting ecologic shifts produce biochemical alterations that lead to oral

MtMAP3Kδ6 Modulates the Growth and Development through Sugar Metabolism Regulation in Medicago truncatula.

Plant growth and development are intricately regulated by molecular mechanisms, with the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling cascade and its associated modules being pivotal. In this study, we identified and characterized a member of the MAPKKK family, MtMAP3Kδ6, from Medicago truncatula. This gene, classified within the B3 subgroup of the MAPKKK family, was expressed across various tissues during plant growth. The knockout mutant of MtMAP3Kδ6 displayed dwarfism, characterized by reduced branching and smaller leaf size, whereas overexpression of MtMAP3Kδ6 in Medicago truncatula l
