Motion-dependent representation of space in area MT+.

How is visual space represented in cortical area MT+? At a relatively coarse scale, the organization of MT+ is debated; retinotopic, spatiotopic, or mixed representations have all been proposed. However, none of these representations entirely explain the perceptual localization of objects at a fine spatial scale--a scale relevant for tasks like navigating or manipulating objects. For example, perceived positions of objects are strongly modulated by visual motion; stationary flashes appear shifted in the direction of nearby motion. Does spatial coding in MT+ reflect these shifts in perceived po

Acoustic variations in adductor spasmodic dysphonia as a function of speech task.

Acoustic phonatory events were identified in 14 women diagnosed with ADSD and compared to those of 14 women age-matched (+/-2 years) with no evidence of vocal pathology/dysfunction. The three acoustic parameters examined during sustained vowel production and reading included phonatory breaks, aperiodicity, and frequency shifts. Intra- and intermeasurer correlations showed high reliability for the measures. Findings indicated that those with ADSD produced a greater frequency of aberrant acoustic events than the controls during both tasks. For the group with ADSD, the amount and type of each eve

Left-right relationship-aware 3D volume classification method.

PURPOSE: This paper proposes a left-right (LR) relationship-aware classification model for 3D volumetric images (3D volume). Bilateral symmetry (LR relationship) is an essential property of the human body that can be used to detect abnormalities and understand anatomical structures. Checking the difference and similarity between the left and right anatomical structures is very important in diagnosis. We propose an LR relationship-aware classification model of 3D volume. METHODS: The proposed model employs an image feature extraction process from LR symmetric positions of human anatomy from 3D

Effort-related motivational effects of methylphenidate: Reversal of the low-effort bias induced by tetrabenazine and enhancement of progressive ratio responding in male and female rats.

Dopamine (DA) regulates behavioral activation and effort-related aspects of motivation. Blockade of DA storage by tetrabenazine (TBZ) induces depressive symptoms in humans, including fatigue and apathy. TBZ shifts choice behavior in rodents from high-effort to low-effort options, which can be used to model motivational symptoms observed in psychiatric disorders. The catecholamine transport inhibitor methylphenidate (MPH) reverses the effort-related effects of TBZ in male rats, but this effect needs to be investigated in females. The current study examined the effects of MPH on effort-based cho

Dissociating the effects of dopamine D2 receptors on effort-based versus value-based decision making using a novel behavioral approach.

Cost-benefit decision making is essential for organisms to adapt to their ever-changing environment. Most studies of cost-benefit decision making involve choice conditions in which effort and value are varied simultaneously. This prevents identification of the aspects of cost-benefit decision making that are affected by experimental manipulations. We developed operant assays to isolate the individual impacts of effort and value manipulations on cost-benefit decision making. In the concurrent effort choice (CEC) task, mice choose between exerting two distinct types of effort: the number of resp

Transient shifts in frontal and parietal circuits scale with enhanced visual feedback and changes in force variability and error.

When subjects perform a learned motor task with increased visual gain, error and variability are reduced. Neuroimaging studies have identified a corresponding increase in activity in parietal cortex, premotor cortex, primary motor cortex, and extrastriate visual cortex. Much less is understood about the neural processes that underlie the immediate transition from low to high visual gain within a trial. This study used 128-channel electroencephalography to measure cortical activity during a visually guided precision grip task, in which the gain of the visual display was changed during the task.

Core and skin temperature influences on the surface electromyographic responses to an isometric force and position task.

The large body of work demonstrating hyperthermic impairment of neuromuscular function has utilized maximal isometric contractions, but extrapolating these findings to whole-body exercise and submaximal, dynamic contractions may be problematic. We isolated and compared core and skin temperature influences on an isometric force task versus a position task requiring dynamic maintenance of joint angle. Surface electromyography (sEMG) was measured on the flexor carpi radialis at 60% of baseline maximal voluntary contraction while either pushing against a rigid restraint (force task) or while maint

Gaze coordination with strides during walking in the cat.

KEY POINTS: Vision plays a crucial role in guiding locomotion in complex environments, but the coordination between gaze and stride is not well understood. The coordination of gaze shifts, fixations, constant gaze and slow gaze with strides in cats walking on different surfaces were examined. It was found that gaze behaviours are coordinated with strides even when walking on a flat surface in the complete darkness, occurring in a sequential order during different phases of the stride. During walking on complex surfaces, gaze behaviours are typically more tightly coordinated with strides, parti

Mind-Wandering Enhances Learning under Uncertainty: Insights from Iowa Gambling Task.

Mind-wandering refers to the shift of attention towards task-unrelated thoughts. The current study aims to explore the impact of mind-wandering on learning and decision-making under uncertain circumstances. This study investigated the interplay of trait (spontaneous and deliberate) and state mind-wandering on learning and decision making using the Iowa Gambling Task. Intermittent thought probes were used to measure state mind wandering, and a standardised 8-item mind-wandering questionnaire was used to measure trait mind wandering. Results revealed that participants demonstrated enhanced learn

Temporally Defined Brain Network Activation Associated With Slowed Information Processing Speed in Multiple Sclerosis.

Information processing speed (IPS) is a core cognitive deficit in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). Previous efforts have associated IPS performance to frontal regions, but were constrained by limited temporal resolution. In this work, we employed a data-driven method, the time delay embedded-hidden Markov model (TDE-HMM), to identify task-specific states that are spectrally defined with distinct temporal and spatial profiles. We used magnetoencephalographic (MEG) data recorded while healthy controls and PwMS performed a cognitive task designed to capture IPS, the Symbol Digit Modalities

Menstrual cycle phase affects discrimination of infant cuteness.

Recent studies have shown that women are more sensitive than men to subtle cuteness differences in infant faces. It has been suggested that raised levels in estradiol and progesterone may be responsible for this advantage. We compared young women's sensitivity to computer-manipulated baby faces varying in cuteness. Thirty-six women were tested once during ovulation and once during the luteal phase of their menstrual cycle. In a two alternative forced-choice experiment, participants chose the baby which they thought was cuter (Task 1), younger (Task 2), or the baby that they would prefer to bab

P300 investigation of phoneme change detection in dyslexic adults.

A specific impairment in phoneme awareness has been hypothesized as one of the current explanations for dyslexia. We examined attentional shifts towards phonological information as indexed by event-related potentials (ERPs) in normal readers and dyslexic adults. Participants performed a lexical decision task on spoken stimuli of which 80% started with a standard phoneme and 20% with a deviant phoneme. A P300 modulation was expected for deviants in control adults, indicating that the phonological change had been detected. A mild and right-lateralized P300 was observed for deviant stimuli in con

Cortical Representations of Visual Stimuli Shift Locations with Changes in Memory States.

Episodic memory retrieval is thought to rely on reactivation of the same content-sensitive neural activity patterns initially expressed during memory encoding.1-6 Yet there are emerging examples of content representations expressed in different brain regions during encoding versus retrieval.7-14 Although these differences have been observed by comparing encoding and retrieval tasks that differ in terms of perceptual experience and cognitive demands, there are many real-world contexts-e.g., meeting a new colleague who reminds you of an old acquaintance-where the memory system might be intrinsic

Improved planning abilities in binge eating.

OBJECTIVE: The role of planning in binge eating episodes is unknown. We investigated the characteristics of planning associated with food cues in binging patients. We studied planning based on backward reasoning, reasoning that determines a sequence of actions back to front from the final outcome. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 20 healthy participants, 20 bulimia nervosa (BN), 22 restrictive (ANR) and 23 binging anorexia nervosa (ANB), without any concomitant impulsive disorder. In neutral/relaxing, binge food and stressful conditions, backward reasoning was assessed with

Spatial learning impairments in PLB1Triple knock-in Alzheimer mice are task-specific and age-dependent.

We recently generated an advanced mouse model of Alzheimer's disease (AD) by targeted knock-in of single-copy mutated human amyloid precursor-protein (APP) and tau genes, crossed with a non-symptomatic presenilin (PS1A246E) over-expressing mouse line. These PLB1Triple mice presented with age-dependent and AD-relevant phenotypes. Homozygous PLB1Triple mice aged 4-12 months were assessed here in a battery of spatial learning tasks: Exp.1 radial-arm water maze (spatial reference and working memory) Exp.2 open-field water maze (spatial reference memory); Exp.3 home cage observation system with spa

The effect of chronic low back pain on trunk muscle activations in target reaching movements with various loads.

STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional study of the timing of trunk muscle activations between 19 participants with chronic low back pain (LBP) compared with 19 matched controls. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of target height and load on trunk muscle coordination in whole body reaching tasks, and whether participants with chronic LBP display a shift in trunk muscle coordination performing these tasks. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Changes in the precise timing of trunk muscle activation may cause an initial episode of back pain, or contribute to the development of recurrent or chronic symptoms.

Temporal coordination during bimanual reach-to-grasp movements: the role of vision.

The performance of bimanual movements involving separate objects presents an obvious challenge to the visuo-motor system: Visual feedback can only be obtained from one target at a time. To overcome this challenge overt shifts in visual attention may occur so that visual feedback from both movements may be used directly (Bingham, Hughes, & Mon-Williams, 2008; Riek, Tresilian, Mon-Williams, Coppard, & Carson, 2003). Alternatively, visual feedback from both movements may be obtained in the absence of eye movements, presumably by covert shifts in attention (Diedrichsen, Nambisan, Kennerley, & Ivry

Are There Differences in Central Coherence and Set Shifting Across the Subtypes of Anorexia Nervosa?: A Systematic Review.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) has been associated with weaknesses in central coherence and set shifting. In this line, it has been proposed to directly address these neuropsychological features in treatment (e.g., cognitive remediation therapy). It is not clear, however, whether the 2 subtypes of AN, the restricting (AN-R) and bingeing/purging (AN-BP) type, have the same amount of problems in these domains. A systematic search of the literature was conducted, using the databases Web of Science and PubMed, looking for studies on the comparison of AN-R and AN-BP in performing central coherence/set-shift

Intrinsic Consistency Preservation With Adaptively Reliable Samples for Source-Free Domain Adaptation.

Unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) aims to alleviate the domain shift by transferring knowledge learned from a labeled source dataset to an unlabeled target domain. Although UDA has seen promising progress recently, it requires access to data from both domains, making it problematic in source data-absent scenarios. In this article, we investigate a practical task source-free domain adaptation (SFDA) that alleviates the limitations of the widely studied UDA in simultaneously acquiring source and target data. In addition, we further study the imbalanced SFDA (ISFDA) problem, which addresses th
