Taste and Pain Response in Burning Mouth Syndrome With and Without Geographic Tongue.

AIMS: To assess the effect of geographic tongue (GT) on taste, salivary flow, and pain characteristics in burning mouth syndrome (BMS) to determine whether GT is a contributing factor to BMS and whether BMS and GT represent similar patient populations. METHODS: A retrospective chart study was conducted. Patients with a diagnosis of BMS or BMS/GT were included. Data regarding smell testing, spatial taste-testing, salivary flow, oral pH, and subjective pain rating on a generalized labeled magnitude scale (gLMS) were collected. RESULTS: No significant differences in age, gender, oral pH, smell,…

The Loss of Smell and Taste in the COVID-19 Outbreak: a Tale of Many Countries.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Olfactory dysfunction in upper airway viral infections (common cold, acute rhinosinusitis) is common (> 60%). During the COVID-19 outbreak, frequency of sensory disorders (smell and/or taste) in affected patients has shown a high variability from 5 to 98%, depending on the methodology, country, and study. RECENT FINDINGS: A sudden, severe, isolated loss of smell and/or taste, in the absence of other upper airway inflammatory diseases (allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinosinusitis, nasal polyposis), should alert individuals and physicians on being potentially affected by COVID-1…

Investigation of smell and taste function in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the relationship between disease severity and taste and smell functions in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome. METHODS: A total of 65 patients with recurrent upper airway obstruction during sleep were included. Participants were divided into four groups according to apnoea-hypopnoea index, obtained on polysomnography. Smell and taste tests were performed on these patients. RESULTS: A significant difference was observed between the smell thresholds of the groups for the identification test (p = 0.016). In the taste test, significant differences …

Effect of lactoferrin on taste and smell abnormalities induced by chemotherapy: a proteome analysis.

Cancer patients receiving chemotherapy often experience taste and smell abnormalities (TSA). To date, the underlying molecular mechanisms of this frequent side-effect have not been determined and effective treatments are not available. This study assessed the feasibility of lactoferrin (LF) supplementation as a treatment for TSA and investigate the related mechanisms through salivary proteome analysis. Nineteen cancer patients with established TSA following chemotherapy administration were enrolled in this study. Cancer patients and additional 12 healthy subjects took LF supplements, 3 tablets…

Neural response to alcohol taste cues in youth: effects of the OPRM1 gene.

Genetic variations in the mu-opioid receptor (OPRM1) gene have been related to high sensitivity to rewarding effects of alcohol. The current study focuses on the neural circuitry underlying this phenomenon using an alcohol versus water taste-cue reactivity paradigm in a young sample at relatively early stages of alcohol use, thus limiting the confound of variations in duration of alcohol use. Drinkers (17-21 years old) were selected on genotype carrying the AA-(n = 20) or the AG-(n = 16) variant of the A118G single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of the OPRM1 gene (rs1799971), and underwent func…

Is There Any Effect on Smell and Taste Functions with Levothyroxine Treatment in Subclinical Hypothyroidism?

Subclinical hypothyroidism has been accused for coronary heart disease, lipid metabolism disorders, neuropsychiatric disorders, infertility or pregnancy related problems with various strength of evidence. Currently there is insufficient knowledge about olfaction and taste functions in subclinical hypothyroidism. Aim of the present study is to investigate the degree of smell and taste dysfunction in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism. 28 subclinical hypothyroid patients, and 31 controls enrolled in the prospective study in Istanbul, Turkey. Subclinical hypothyroid patients were treated wi…

The Role of 5-HT3 Receptors in Signaling from Taste Buds to Nerves.

Activation of taste buds triggers the release of several neurotransmitters, including ATP and serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT). Type III taste cells release 5-HT directly in response to acidic (sour) stimuli and indirectly in response to bitter and sweet tasting stimuli. Although ATP is necessary for activation of nerve fibers for all taste stimuli, the role of 5-HT is unclear. We investigated whether gustatory afferents express functional 5-HT3 receptors and, if so, whether these receptors play a role in transmission of taste information from taste buds to nerves. In mice expressing GFP …

[Progress in the effects of injury and regeneration of gustatory nerves on the taste functions in animals].

The sensor of the taste is the taste bud. The signals originated from the taste buds are transmitted to the central nervous system through the gustatory taste nerves. The chorda tympani nerve (innervating the taste buds of the anterior tongue) and glossopharyngeal nerve (innervating the taste buds of the posterior tongue) are the two primary gustatory nerves. The injuries of gustatory nerves cause their innervating taste buds atrophy, degenerate and disappear. The related taste function is also impaired. The impaired taste function can be restored after the gustatory nerves regeneration. The r…

Genetic variations in taste receptors are associated with chronic rhinosinusitis: a replication study.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence implicates polymorphisms of the bitter taste receptor TAS2R38 as defining characteristics in respiratory innate defense that may contribute to the complex genetic and environmental interactions predisposing to chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). The purpose of this study was to (1) verify whether identified polymorphisms associated with respiratory infection in taste receptors replicate within our existing population of patients with CRS and (2) identify other taste receptors potentially associated with CRS. METHODS: Pooling-based genomewide association studies (pGWAS) w…

Aminofeel improves the sensitivity to taste in patients with HCV-infected liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic liver diseases have a taste disorder and altered zinc metabolism. We investigated the effects of a supplement enriched with branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) (Aminofeel) on sensitivity to different tastes in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infected liver disease. MATERIAL/METHODS: Nine patients (mean age 63.3+/-9.1 years) with HCV-related liver diseases were identified and examined for sensitivity to different tastes. Eight patients had no awareness of taste disorders, and 3 patients had oral lichen planus. We examined 4 tastes (sweet, salty, sour, and …

Unusual complication of tonsillectomy: taste disturbance and the lingual branch of the glossopharyngeal nerve.

Taste disturbance is an unusual complication of tonsillectomy of which there are very few reports in the literature. The possible causes of this rare complication are: (1) direct or indirect damage to the glossopharyngeal nerve or its lingual branch (LBGN), (2) lack of dietary zinc, and (3) habitual drug intake. We report a 41-year-old man, who complained of taste disturbance following tonsillectomy that was performed for chronic tonsillitis and unilateral (left) tonsillar hypertrophy. During surgery, hypertrophic tonsils were found to be sited deeply into the tonsillar bed, especially at the …

Immunohistochemical investigation of the nitrergic system in the taste organ of the frog, Rana esculenta.

We have studied by immunocytochemistry, the taste discs of the frog, Rana esculenta, with the aim of providing morphological and neurochemical data on the nitrergic system and of assessing the eventual presence of intrinsic neurons associated with the gustatory organs. In taste discs, antibodies against neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) revealed a positive immunoreaction in the taste receptor cell bodies and processes. The basal cells were also stained. All the fungiform papillae contained intragemmal nerve fibers showing nNOS immunoreactivity; these fiber were mainly located in the basal …
