Authors report a study of 66 patients admitted to the clinic ORL of CHU Le Dantec between 1991 and 2000 for goiter and hyperthyroidism. In this retrospective review, 19 diabetic patients with significant lower-extremity pathology were assessed to determine the success of limb salvage in cases of varying complexity. The patients were either scheduled or at risk for below-the-knee amputation before intervention. After the limb-salvage procedure, patients were followed for 4 months to 9 years. Eighteen patients went on to have successful procedures, avoiding below-the-knee amputation; one patient had an above-the-knee amputation. The results demonstrate the benefits of an aggressive team approach with limb salvage as a goal.

In a 5-year period, the stillbirth rate in a teaching hospital in Hong Kong was 4.4 per 1,000 total births, which accounted for 61% of the perinatal deaths. The stillbirth rate was 5.8 times higher in twin pregnancies, and 17 times higher in triplet pregnancies. One quarter of the patients were nonbooked, and 14.5% had no antenatal care. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy was introduced at McGill University-affiliated hospitals in a planned manner to evaluate the safety and results of this new procedure while training attending and resident surgeons. This study evaluated whether a concurrent group teaching procedure, in which all students respond simultaneously, could be used for persons with moderate or severe mental retardation. The teaching procedure used was the Task Demonstration Model, a program based on stimulus-control research and the fading techniques of behavioral psychology. We reviewed the charts of 476 patients admitted to a university teaching hospital to determine whether sedative-hypnotic drugs (SHDs) were being used excessively and to examine the use of SHDs as hypnotics. The use of a heart sound simulator in teaching recognition of heart sounds was tested in 37 graduate students. Subjects were randomly divided into two groups; one group received both auditory and tactile cues and the other group received only auditory cues. Students were tested at three times: (1) before use of the simulator, (2) after a short teaching session using the simulator, and (3) 2 weeks later.
