Infections with Tickborne Pathogens after Tick Bite, Austria, 2015-2018.

The aim of this prospective study was to assess the risk for tickborne infections after a tick bite. A total of 489 persons bitten by 1,295 ticks were assessed for occurrence of infections with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia spp., Babesia spp., Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis, and relapsing fever borreliae. B. burgdorferi s.l. infection was found in 25 (5.1%) participants, of whom 15 had erythema migrans. Eleven (2.3%) participants were positive by PCR for Candidatus N. mikurensis. One asymptomatic participant infected with B. miyamotoi was identified

Arthropods and associated arthropod-borne diseases transmitted by migrating birds. The case of ticks and tick-borne pathogens.

Geographic spread of parasites and pathogens poses a constant risk to animal health and welfare, particularly given that climate change is expected to potentially expand appropriate ranges for many key species. The spread of deleterious organisms via trade routes and human travelling is relatively closely controlled, though represents only one possible means of parasite/pathogen distribution. The transmission via natural parasite/pathogen movement between geographic locales, is far harder to manage. Though the extent of such movement may be limited by the relative inability of many parasites a

Upcoming and future strategies of tick control: a review.

Ticks are distributed worldwide and significantly impact human and animal health. Due to severe problems associated with the continuous use of acaricides on animals, integrated tick management is recommended. Increasing public health concern over the tick-borne diseases demands the strategic control of ticks on animals that transmit diseases to human beings. Immunological control of tick vector of Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD) on cattle and other wild reservoir hosts is one of the possible alternative strategy for reducing the transmission of KFD to man. Chemical-vaccine synergies have been de

A mapping of Rhipicephalus microplus resistance to acaricides in the littoral region of Argentina.

The aim of this work was to perform an analysis of the geographical dispersion of Rhipicephalus microplus resistance to acaricides in the littoral region of Argentina, which is the most favorable area for the development of this tick in the Argentinean territory. The data were obtained through the application of in vitro bioassays. Larval immersion test (LIT) were the bioassays used to detect resistance to ivermectin and fipronil, while adult immersion tests (AIT) were employed for the diagnosis of resistance to pyrethroids, amitraz and the combinations of cypermethrin with organophosphates. A new method for in vitro feeding of Rhipicephalus australis (formerly Rhipicephalus microplus) larvae: a valuable tool for tick vaccine development.

BACKGROUND: Rhipicephalus microplus is a hard tick that has a major impact on cattle health in tropical and subtropical regions because it feeds on cattle and is implicated in the transmission of pathogens that cause diseases such as bovine anaplasmosis and babesiosis. Presently, acaricides are used to control tick infestation but this is becoming increasingly less effective due to the emergence of tick strains that are resistant to one or more classes of acaricides. Anti-tick vaccines are a promising alternative to control tick infestation in cattle. The life-cycle and host preference of R. m

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding ticks and tick-borne diseases, Finland.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and Lyme borreliosis (LB) are endemic in Finland, with tens and thousands of cases, respectively, reported annually. We performed a field survey to investigate people's knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) regarding ticks, tick-borne diseases, and prevention strategies. The KAP were assessed using a pre-validated anonymous questionnaire consisting of 39 questions and statements. On two consecutive days in July 2016, convenience sampling was used in the cities of Parainen and Kotka, located in high-risk areas of tick-borne diseases, particularly of TBE. In atti

Efficacy of oral afoxolaner and a combination of afoxolaner, moxidectin, and pyrantel against Amblyomma maculatum in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Amblyomma maculatum is a tick with a broad host range that is undergoing an expansion of its range within the USA. When feeding the predilection sites on the host are the head and ears and due to the long mouthparts, it can cause significant lesions that can lead to infection. It has also been implicated as a vector of Hepatozoon americanum, the causative agent of canine hepatozoonosis and a spotted fever group Rickettsia, Rickettsia parkeri. METHODS: Two randomized, blinded, negative controlled studies were conducted to determine whether treatment with afoxolaner (NexGard®, Boehr

Ectoparasite impacts on Gerbillus andersoni allenbyi under natural conditions.

To assess ectoparasite impact on individuals and populations of Gerbillus andersoni allenbyi under natural conditions, I addressed the following questions. Do ectoparasites affect their host fitness and, if so, how? Do ectoparasites affect host population level? Does this parasite-host interaction support the traditional concept of parasite evolution towards avirulence? For this purpose, host infestation, infection, survival, haematological indices, and physical condition were recorded. A field experiment which included manipulating host infestation while recording host survival was conducted

Why are the ticks winning, and what can we do about it?

Human illness associated with tick bites is on the rise in the United States. One root cause is that several human-biting tick species serving as pathogen vectors, including the blacklegged tick and the lone star tick, have expanded their geographic ranges in recent decades, with many areas in the U.S. now harboring multiple species of vector ticks. As currently used, personal tick bite prevention and environmental tick control have not succeeded in stemming the rising tide of humans being bitten by ticks. A national strategy to prevent and control vector-borne diseases provides a blueprint to

New records of tick-host mammal interactions (Acari: Ixodidae) in two conservation units of the Brazilian Amazon.

Ticks are ectoparasites of major public and veterinary health importance, and identifying their vertebrate hosts is crucial for recognizing pathogen reservoirs. This study investigated tick-wild mammal associations in two areas of the Brazilian Amazon. Between 2021 and 2023, wild mammals were captured using Tomahawk® and Sherman® traps, and ticks were collected manually or with forceps. A total of 110 wild mammals were captured, including 66 marsupials, 43 rodents, and one felid, representing 12 genera. Three species were identified at the species level: Didelphis marsupialis, Myoprocta pratti

Threats to international travellers posed by tick-borne diseases.

To date, 14 tick-borne diseases have been reported in international travellers, the majority of cases being Lyme borreliosis caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in North America and Eurasia, African tick bite fever caused by Rickettsia africae in sub-Saharan Africa and eastern Caribbean, and Central European encephalitis caused by tick-borne encephalitis virus in Europe. The clinical presentation is frequently non-specific, and tick-borne diseases should always, in the absence of other likely diagnoses, be suspected in travellers with flu-like symptoms following a recent visit to tick-in

Effect of deer reduction on abundance of the deer tick (Ixodes dammini).

To evaluate the role of deer in regulating the abundance of the deer tick (Ixodes dammini) we attempted to treat with acaricide, but eventually removed, about 70 percent of deer from Great Island, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Deer were captured in box traps, a corral, an entanglement net, and with rifle-fired tranquilizer. Failure of these attempts, combined with ineffective acaricides, led us to deer destruction begun in fall 1982. Larval tick abundance on mice was monitored before and after deer removal. We concluded that deer removal, to the extent accomplished, did not markedly reduce the abun

Tick-borne relapsing fever.

Tick-borne relapsing fever is characterized by recurring fevers separated by afebrile periods and is accompanied by nonspecific constitutional symptoms. It occurs after a patient has been bitten by a tick infected with a Borrelia spirochete. The diagnosis of tick-borne relapsing fever requires an accurate characterization of the fever and a thorough medical, social, and travel history of the patient. Findings on physical examination are variable; abdominal pain, vomiting, and altered sensorium are the most common symptoms. Laboratory confirmation of tick-borne relapsing fever is made by detect

Mitochondrial sequence variation in Carlos capensis (Neumann), a parasite of seabirds, collected on Torishima Island in Japan.

Partial mitochondrial 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid gene sequences in the ticks Carios capensis collected from black-footed albatross. Diomedea nigripes, colonies on Torishima Island, Japan (30 degrees 28'N, 140 degrees 18'E), were examined. The sequence was compared with those of C. capensis from Hawaii, South Carolina, and Texas. The sequences were all identical in ticks from Torishima and 2 from Hawaii. There were 2-3 transitions between the other Hawaiian and Texas ticks and Torishima specimens. Two transitions were also observed when compared with the ticks from South Carolina. The resul

Cutaneous responses of cattle to extracts from Rhipicephalus appendiculatus larvae.

A component of an extract from Rhipicephalus appendiculatus larval ticks induced an immediate hypersensitivity reaction in sensitized cattle when intra-dermally inoculated. Generally, the magnitude of the cutaneous reaction depended upon the duration of exposure of the cattle to tick infestation. The skin reaction was absent in steers not previously fed on by ticks. Field trials, using the extract in the Narok District of Kenya (Masailand), showed that the skin swelling thus induced was biggest in adult cattle and those over 9 months, moderate in the 6-month age-group and barely palpable in th

Rickettsia conorii isolated from Rhipicephalus sanguineus introduced into Switzerland on a pet dog.

A tick/rickettsial survey in a household near Geneva, Switzerland, revealed that 30 (40%) of 75 nymphs and adults of the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, were infected with a rickettsial agent biologically and antigenically indistinguishable from R. conorii, the causative agent of boutonneuse fever. Introduced in 1979 from either southern France or Italy by the family's pet dog, the tick infestation had steadily increased until 1981 when control measures were initiated. During 1980 and 1981, four persons associated with the household's pet dog contracted a febrile illness diagnosed as

[Chronic infection of cells with tick-borne encephalitis virus. Additional characteristics of the provirus].

The paper presents additional characteristics of HEp-2 cells cronically infested with tick-borne encephalitis virus, Sofyin strain (Hep-2-Sof). On the basis of the inhibition analysis, the method of molecular hybridization, and transfection, HEp-2-Sof cells were shown to contain dozens of DNA-transcripts of tick-borne encephalitis virus integrated into nucleoplasm DNA and into the fraction of repeated sequences. Their transcription is mediated by a polymerase sensitive to L-amanitine.
